Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17 Thread 18

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

out, I wouldn't bother double cleansing with the same product. You'll just be exposing your skin to more water and risking compromising the skin barrier and making it more prone to irritation, especially if it's a face wash or similar. Just use more cleanser, try it on dry skin, wet hands to emulsify and really cleanse for a full minute at least. Set a timer as it's a lot longer than you think. If that doesn't properly shift it, then it's probably worth getting an oil cleanser in. What are you currently using?

Sallie, it's layered at the front as it was already like that, I don't look that great with one length at the front. It's also sort of layered at the ends to stop it from flicking out/curling under, but I think that's not considered layering but cutting in?

SallieSallow · 20/06/2019 16:23

I have a blunt fringe Bo so don't really need anything round the front, probably would do without the fringe though. Is cutting in where they sort of snip up into the hair? think I might have got a bit of that too, it doesn't look layered though. When it's down mine looks like a slightly longer version of the photo I posted here a while ago, will have to try and upload a pic.

SallieSallow · 20/06/2019 21:49

This is the photo, my hair is a bit longer than that and doesn’t have the layers at the front but I can style it like that quite easily with my beloved airwrap.

I’ll try and take a pic of my hair when it’s done if I can work out how to blur my face out. It’s currently in a pineapple on top of my head with my fringe clipped back so won’t be tonight for sure Grin

And wish my face looked like that model as well as the hair Sad

That's Alexa Chung Sallie, if you want to google for future ideas. Gorgeous do.

SallieSallow · 22/06/2019 11:15

I have no idea who Alexa Chung is (yes I do live under a rock as far as celebs are concerned Grin) but will have a google now, thanks Enid

TantricTwist · 22/06/2019 13:31

Yes that's Alexa Chung. And there is a video of Lisa Eldridge doing her make up if you want some tips.

TantricTwist · 22/06/2019 13:33

She used to present a sort of Teen TV show and became famous due to her style and that's it. I always thought she was really funny so I've always liked her.

mintmagnummm · 23/06/2019 08:30

Is it bha that's good for the nose area? Feel like I need something for just my nose as it's not smooth, I get a lot of filaments and spots on nose but it's also quite sensitive and can get angry if too stimulated. Don't want to try the Vichy mask as it contains fragrance and I know that upsets my skin so was thinking the Paula's choice bha just on nose 1-2x per week??

TantricTwist · 23/06/2019 13:42

Mint yes defo try PC BHA. I use that and have no problems re my nose.

There is some kind of combination of BHA, oil cleanse and clay mask which is meant to help clear filaments but not sure which order.

mintmagnummm · 23/06/2019 13:51

Thanks tant it's the bha lotion that's best isn't it?? I'm currently using my avene extremely gentle cleanser either as a double cleanse or a longer single cleanse depending on how I feel, should I continue with this or should I really be using an oil like dhc first 🤔. I wear spf 50 and nars tm

SallieSallow · 24/06/2019 13:58

this is the PC BHA I was using mint
Paula's Choice

I'm now using a Cosrx one which is milder but I can use it every day instead of 1 or 2 x a week.
CosRx

This is the 'routine' for clearing pores/sebaceous filaments - with your sensitive skin mint I'd proceed with extreme caution and on your nose only if you do decide to go ahead.

mintmagnummm · 24/06/2019 14:19

Thanks Sallie I'm a bit worried about the cosrx one as it contains ha and niacinamide. I won't be doing the pore cleaning routine, my skin definitely wouldn't like it and I think I have a touch of rosacea on my nose.

SallieSallow · 24/06/2019 14:33

hmm I'm not sure if I'd recommend any BHA/SA for your nose then Mint if you suspect rosacea. Vichy do a clay mask that I find quite good and you can order samples for a couple of £
Vichy Clay Mask

mintmagnummm · 24/06/2019 14:57

Sallie that clay mask contains fragrance though doesn't it? Although I guess if it's rinsed off rather than staying on the skin it may be ok. How often would you use it?
Also do you think my cleanser is sufficient on its own or should I get an oil? 🤔

SallieSallow · 24/06/2019 16:53

I was using it once a week Mint haven't for a while as kind of forgot about it but have just ordered some more. The samples are about £3 but they'd last a good few weeks if you are just using on your snout Grin

I'd steer clear of the oil if your current routine is working.

mintmagnummm · 24/06/2019 17:46

Where do you get the samples Sallie? I can't find them

SallieSallow · 24/06/2019 18:51

Look fantastic have them Mint

SallieSallow · 24/06/2019 18:54

Meant to say Enid and a couple of others here are using glamglow supermud on their snouts 🐽 but it’s quite potent so could be irritating especially if you think you’ve got rosacea. It’s also expensive and no samples for sale anywhere that I know of.

mintmagnummm · 24/06/2019 19:09

Thank you Sallie xx

YesQueen · 24/06/2019 19:15

I caved and my shiny dyson dryer arrived today Blush

SallieSallow · 24/06/2019 20:35

I hope you love it YesQueen I’m still in love with my airwrap and the hairdryer that came as part of that is awesome, super fast and no frizz - absolute miracle.

EnidButton · 24/06/2019 23:13

Yes Mint I wouldn't get the Glamglow one. It caused redness on my fairly sensitive skin so I think it'd make your skin really react. Vichy one is lightly perfumes but gentle otherwise. I don't have perfume issues so can't judge that but it's not overly drying like some clay masks.

The fanciest dryer in the world Queen and Sallie 💅🏻👑 Check you two out! Grin

I had to have co-codamol today so I feel sick as a dog now. 🤢 And very floaty. However my cheeks have a lovely glow to them. Not a beauty treatment I'd recommend...

mintmagnummm · 25/06/2019 07:39

Thanks Enid. Oh dear not good bless you, I take co dydramol on a daily basis so I sympathise. Co codamol affects me more than the dydramol so you may be better off switching too?

MerryMarigold · 25/06/2019 09:10

Just to say thanks to you lovely lot for helping me with my skin. I've been clueless and didn't even wear sunscreen till recently (I'm 46!). My skin had never been sensitive but had become so in the last year, also very dry. I've read the documents you link. Someone recommended the Clinique sunscreen and it's lovely (though I'm going to have to find something cheaper long term, it was my birthday present). Redness has gone right down. Skin seems to be best state it's been for a long time and I've only been using the Clinique for a week.

Can I ask if Micellar water is bad to cleanse with? That's what I've been using but not sure if it's too harsh. It's a Garnier sensitive one. Just that I have most of a large bottle left!

MerryMarigold · 25/06/2019 09:13

I mean I did wear lotion on holidays abroad but vvvv rarely in the UK. I'm half Asian so my skin doesn't burn easily but sun was obviously still damaging it.
