Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17 Thread 18

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Merry all micellar water makes me itchy/rashy so I steer well clear. i think it may be ok as a first cleanse (others will probably be able to advise better though) to remove makeup and SPF as long as you second cleanse with a proper wash off cleanser. I wouldn't use it in the morning either, again use either a wash off cleanser or just tepid water and a cloth/flannel if you're skin is dry.

CJDoesTheJackal · 25/06/2019 10:54

Hi all,

I've taken a bit of a break from MN (was Pupsie).

My routine has remain unchanged for at least 6 months.

Has anyone tried the new Face Theory products? I keep getting spammed with ads and emails. They seem to have really increased their range.

How is everyone? Anything new / interesting to report?

SallieSallow · 25/06/2019 12:51

Hi CJD Smile nice to see you!

I'm not familiar with face theory and their site seems to be blocked from work which is odd as can get on MN fine Confused

I've survived a recent haircut and am in love with my Dyson airwrap, other than that nothing new or exciting going on with me.

CJDoesTheJackal · 25/06/2019 13:10

CJD!! Mad Cow Disease! Should have thought of that lol.

SallieSallow · 25/06/2019 18:34

Ha I’d forgotten all about mad cow disease and CJD Blush maybe we should stick to Jackal Grin

EnidButton · 26/06/2019 00:42

I'll go with CJ instead. Grin Hello!

Merry I've only tried one miceller water and really didn't like it. Found it very harsh on my skin and not very good at cleansing. Do you like it or just think it doesn't do much?

Mint Thank you, I'll look into that one.

TantricTwist · 26/06/2019 01:51

Hi CJ was Pupsie

Enid I hope you're feeling better

Merry I use Bioderma micellar water all the time because I can be lazy AF and don't follow it with another cleanser. I do however follow it with Thermal spray and AHA, BHA or Pixi retinol / rose tonic to remove everything.

Sallie and Yes pity the dyson is so expensive but brilliant something exists to make your curly hair look amazing.

I'm an idiot who sat on the beach this evening not realising the CYO foundation has no SPF in it so my cheeks are a tad rosy.

I'm hoping however it will calm down as I had EH Vit C cream on before and after (the one from the M&S summer box) It's really nice actually and tiny bit goes a very long way.

K1ssIt · 26/06/2019 02:29

Just popping on to say Hello.

I'm quite new to skincare and have probably left it too late to start as Im almost 40.

All I've really done is the occasional swipe of a simple moisturiser if I felt a bit dry but since getting the m and s advent calendar I've loved trying the products and have finished most of the creams and I'm really keen to learn more and start something more structured.

The Prai neck cream I absolutely loved and did end up buying a full sized tub. My first plan is to learn about the ingredients in that to see if it actually has benefits rather than being just a luxury. I'd have gagged at the thought of spending so much on a cream a year ago!

Other products I've enjoyed this year is the Glam Glow instamud and Glam Glow Supermud.

I had minis in a birch box or something similar and loved them but wasn't keen on the price but managed to snag some gift sets just after Xmas for about £20 with the full sized SuperMud and minis in one set and full sized instamud and minis stuff in another so stocked up. I've just finished one full sized jar I opened in Jan, wasn't expecting it to last so long! I've got a couple of mini tubes that teenage dd loves to use just on her spots and it seems really good for that for her. She hates the sensation though.

I'm going to start reading those links in the OP now but just wanted to placemark with a hello :)

SallieSallow · 26/06/2019 08:08

Hi K1ss

I’d say that if you’ve not really bothered with skincare up to now then you’re going to see results just because you are actually doing something & there’s probably no need to spend a fortune especially on moisturiser, most of us here use fairly basic moisturisers and spend a bit more on serums & actives.

What is your current routine? If you let us know what you’re doing/using now alongside the neck cream & glam glow we can suggest some tweaks/options.

I’d definitely be careful introducing too many new products at once as it can overload your skin & cause irritation but also because it’s difficult to know what’s working and what isn’t if you’ve got loads of new things on the go.

Outtheforest · 26/06/2019 08:36

My BHA should finally be arriving this week, I know I should test on a small patch of skin first but if that goes ok should I use it all over or just on problem areas?
Also another question for the experts, is their a benefit to moisturising the eye area? I find LRP duo + a bit harsh for around my eyes (they're very sensitive compared to the rest of my face) so have been using moisture surge in that area which does the job but the pot is running out and I wonder if theirs actually any benefit to replacing it as I generally dont get dry skin there.

K1ssIt · 26/06/2019 15:16

Thank you, be honest I'm not really doing much.

Morning and Night

I've been using a travel size miceller water by Garner that came with a magazine, followed by travel size pixi rose glow toner that came with my advent calendar, then the Prai neck cream but I put all over my face too.

(Pitting neck cream in face isn't some kind of big no-no is it? Blush)

That's pretty much it apart from I've not been consistent with sticking to one brand or type of cleanser or toner as I've been working my through minis and samples.

I wash my face with just warm water and a flannel. I don't wear make up very often despite owning a lot of it but if I have I use "you're good skin" hot cloth cleanser which I really really like as it melts everything away and then the regular warm water and flannel is enough.

Glam Glow Supermud on whole face once or twice a week, instamud once or twice a week too.

I was looking at The Ordinary website for serums etc but got utterly overwhelmed which so decided to start doing some learning so I know what's what. Im wary of adding to much stuff in one go so def won't be doing that. You're right, I'll not know what's working and what's not.

mintmagnummm · 26/06/2019 15:56

Is there anything I can put in my hair after washing while wet to make it curly without using dryer etc? (Hair is naturally curly/wavy) if I leave it to air dry using nothing it dries into a big fluff ball a bit like candy floss lol.

YesQueen · 26/06/2019 17:47

@mintmagnummm few choices really
Mousse
Leave in conditioner
Gel
Custard (it's a product!)

I aim to get crunchy curls and when I scrunch that out (when completely dry it leaves me with nice curls) like this

mintmagnummm · 26/06/2019 19:34

Thanks queen I just want something very low maintenance that I can put in after washing and leave. Leave in conditioner is a definite no no as my hair doesn't like anything heavy and I can react to conditioners if they touch my face or neck 🙄

SallieSallow · 26/06/2019 19:47

Out I would use the BHA just on your problem area at first, is it your nose? Snouts tend to be more oily and less sensitive than other parts of your face so it’s a good place to start 🐽🐽🐽

K1ss I would use the hot cloth cleanser at night, even if you’re not wearing makeup you should be wearing spf of at least 30 at this time of year and it needs a decent cleanse to remove as it’s designed to stick to your skin. If you’re not using one then definitely get one in place before you do anything else, and I’d stop with the pixi toner and the supermud till you get one as they both contain acids which make your skin more sensitive/prone to sun damage.

Micellar water irritates my skin so I steer clear & am a bit confused about what it’s actually for or does Confused I presumed it was a makeup remover so no need if you’re not wearing any but Tant who posted up above uses it so might chime in on that.

When you go back on the glamglow stuff I’d do either supermud or instamud once a week only and don’t use the pixi toner that night.

The prai is just a fairly heavy duty moisturiser from what I can gather so no reason you can’t use it on your face, but once it’s gone you could probably get the same results from something cheaper.

Once you’ve got your spf sorted you could add a hyaluronic acid serum at night and a Vit c serum in the morning but one at a time, not both at once and no Vit c till you’ve got that SPF Grin

SallieSallow · 26/06/2019 19:54

Mint I haven’t used this but it has good reviews

YesQueen I get serious hair envy every time I see your gorgeous curls ❤️

Skinfulnappies46 · 26/06/2019 20:03

queen your hair is beautiful - fellow CG here 🤗! How did you find the dyson? I could be swayed to getting a dyson...

YesQueen · 26/06/2019 20:16

@Skinfulnappies46 I really like it so far. Doesn't blow curls about but dries my hair a lot faster

K1ssIt · 27/06/2019 03:16

Thank you so much for the tips sallie.

SPF will be the habit I start on introducing from tomorrow. I've got three little travel/face type ones in the house already as husband works outdoors and I'm always buying the stuff for him and hassling him to use it. I've just tried one of the mini ones on my arm and very surprised to see it's just like a moisturiser in texture, I was expecting it to be like the thick gunky stuff I slather myself when abroad.

I'll be starting that tomorrow morning and will put the other stuff on hold until I've developed the SPF habit.

Not sure what Micellar water is meant to do either, I thought it was just a cleanser and because I'd read somewhere to start with cleanse, tone and moisturise I figured I'd start working my way through the minis and samples of stuff I've gotten in subscriptions or for Xmas etc.

I bought a Dyson Airwrap in November and absolutely love it. My hair is usually fine, limp and fly away and has never held a curl but the air wrap has changed all that. Expensive but worth it.

queen your hair is gorgeous. I'm jealous of your curls, they are very nice.

Mint. I bought this product recently,

www.leestafford.com/en/products/styling/air-or-blow-dry-cream-lite#.XRQl2hbTXDs

My hair is flyaway and staticy if I don't blow dry it and this product looked interesting as it's a styling product for hair to air dry, my hair isn't naturally curly but I needed hair out my way one night after after I'd applied the stuff so shoved it in a bun on top of my head when it was about eighty per cent dry, forgot about it and when I took the bun out it looked lovely.

mintmagnummm · 27/06/2019 05:46

Thank you Sallie and K1 ill look at both of those x

EnidButton · 27/06/2019 13:30

I need hair advice. My ends have gone dry and rough feeling and it's generally frizzier than usual. It was feeling smooth and shiny 3 weeks ago so it's obviously something I've done. It started after I used the Aussie moisturing (!) shampoo and conditioner but has got worse the more I've tried to fix it.

Have used Elasticizer, Redken heatcure masks, Redken AllSoft mask and L'Oréal professional mask.

I'm wondering if I've over proteined my hair and if so, would a moisturising mask fix it or does the protein have to be stripped somehow?

After the last Olaplex treatment my hair felt like this. Is that protein?
Shit hair bothers me more than shit skin would. What do I do?

EnidButton · 27/06/2019 13:30

Please and thank you Cake

EnidButton · 27/06/2019 13:45

Right I'm off out to buy a Shea Moisture mask as apparently they're good for over proteined hair. I wish they'd put the word protein in big letters on the front of packaging.(I know the Redken one does) Because they all say they're for brittle dry hair I thought they'd help but think they've added to the problem. 🙄

YesQueen · 27/06/2019 13:51

The Shea moisture castor oil is protein so avoid that one

EnidButton · 27/06/2019 16:26

Thanks Queen will do. 👑
