Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

I've just ordered some of the La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Gel B5 Pro-Recovery Gel. My skin has been a bit off these last few weeks.

mintmagnummm · 04/02/2019 20:49

Sallie yes I've used the eucerin one, I bloody loved it for ages but then my skin decided it didn't like it anymore! Now if I apply it my skin kind of sweats it out! I get tiny balls of sweat all over face, not a nice look lol.

My skin definitely doesn't seem to like niacinamide or hyaluronic acid! 🙄

Christmastree43 · 04/02/2019 21:05

Fab thank you so much sallie

mintmagnummm · 05/02/2019 07:12

Ok so why all of a sudden is my spf pilling?? No products have changed and my routine is the same?? It's weird because my skin is playing up also so maybe it's linked but WHY 😫

Redandblue11 · 05/02/2019 07:49

Great, thanks Sallie
So where do I go next to decide which antiaging if I use spf. What serums, etc have you tried and like? But I understand what works for one might not for the other person.

Redandblue11 · 05/02/2019 07:50

Btw - i am using Khiel and Loccitane products

mintmagnummm · 05/02/2019 09:49

I know I said my skin dislikes ha but I'm wondering whether to start using my mineral 89 in the pm, out of all the ha serums I've ever tried this one was most tolerated and I'm noticing my skin is becoming dehydrated again and crepey around my eyes.
On bo's barrier repair sheet it says to watch out for lower molecule ha, is the Vichy 89 lower?? 🤔

SallieSallow · 05/02/2019 12:22

I don't know Mint and google wasn't helpful, but they have a live chat function on Vichy's website so might be worth asking there.

Red I have oily/combo skin (though prone to dry patches and flaking in winter) and use retinol, vit c and Hyaluronic acid for anti-ageing. What is your skin type as I'd be reluctant to recommend anything that I use if you have very sensitive skin or any conditions like rosacea.

I have a hair related question - has anyone with brown hair tried those blue shampoos that get rid of red tones and do they work? I'm thinking of trying a cooler brown (rather than current mahogany/dark red brown) for summer.

Redandblue11 · 05/02/2019 13:20

Yes Sally completely agree about not recommending.
My skin (other than tendency to oily t zone) is I would say normal but with tendency to being sensitive. Specially around neck area I can get a bit red with certain fabrics / Jewellery. My face can get a bit like that (not too much) . I am a bit wary of that hence I did not want to try something potentially too harsh or things like retinol where o have to be so careful with sun exposure and protection.
I can accept that other products might be less effective, so was wondering about the less “harsh” what are the options for anti-aging ... other than sun protection, water, fruit and vegetables and genes.
Not sure if I am asking for the impossible!

mintmagnummm · 05/02/2019 13:53

Sallie I tried googling too without success! I'll try the live chat though thank you. My skin must have been ok with it though as I got through 3 full bottles of the stuff! Where as others like hydraluron I reacted to after 2-3 days! I still have a tiny bit of mineral 89 left so I'll give it a try over the next couple of nights before deciding whether to purchase another bottle. I also used it in the summer on its own and had no problems so I'm a little unsure why I stopped using it lol.

mintmagnummm · 05/02/2019 13:54

Sorry I meant to add I don't have brown hair so can't help you with that I'm afraid

I used the mineral 89 (had shower and done face early today) and now my skin feels very itchy and tacky so I guess I know now ha isn't for me! It's so hard now days though finding products without ha or niacinamide 🙄

JDSTER · 05/02/2019 17:27

Hi 👋 red. A retinoid/retinol is where it’s at in terms of anti-ageing. It does require careful use, as Sallie says, but nothing else will come close in terms of efficacy. It isn’t overnight by any means (months before you’d notice a difference) but I like to think I’m investing in a product that has research into its long term effects. I use a retinoid by Medik 8. Some people on here like pestle and mortar retinoid oil. You need to start with just a couple of times a week and gradually build up to using it most nights. Vital to wear spf 50 every day and keep out of sun/seek shade reapply sunscreen in sunny weather (I’m not reapplying at the moment in this weather when I’m barely seeing the light of day)

I haven’t tried NuFace yet. It’s charged and ready to go but I’m procrastinating for some reason Confused

SallieSallow · 05/02/2019 18:38

JDSTER I procrastinated for about 2 months with the nuface - and it had been sitting idle for 2 + years before that! I’ve got into the swing of it now but I have the mini so just do the basic 5 mins routine in the morning. I was trying to do the extended routine which included all the lifts & my neck last time and it became too much of a chore & got abandoned.

Red I’m using pestle & mortar superstar oil as my retinol, it’s very gentle/mild compared to most but definitely still follow JDSTER’s advice above. I have a sensitive neck too (gets itchy and rashy/blotchy) I don’t use retinol or any actives/acids on it.

JDSTER · 05/02/2019 19:35

Christmas have you tried a hydrating serum to use underneath a moisturiser? Superdrug make a quite cheap but well regarded serum called simply pure (I think). I have the opposite of dry skin but la Roche posay do some good moisturisers in the Toleriane range.

botemp · 05/02/2019 21:26

JDSTER, get to vibrating that face already!

Halo

Hiya, Red, WRT Dr Perricone it's not something I've ever tried. Lots of ingredients that rule it out for me personally. Also the price point is excessive in comparison to its competitors these days. In the past is was one of the few higher performing brands that was readily available but it's easily been surpassed by others now. Nothing horribly wrong with it, just a bit out of sync with time.

In terms of gold standard anti ageing it's pretty much as follows:

Sunscreen with high UVA protection
Retinoids
Alpha Hydroxy Acids
Vitamin C

With the exception of sunscreen (obviously) all three require diligent care with sunscreen as a result of their use. The only one where you have to be super diligent is prescription tretinoin the others all only require an SPF15 protection, technically, though with user error that's not really considered a sufficient spf rating by most these days.

As for retinoids alternatives there is Bokchiol, often touted as a bio-retinoid, it's actually no relation to the retinoids family but potentially acts similarly. Very little evidence to support it and a big push currently by the natural movement (read: lots of profits). There's also peptides like Matrixyl and Matrixyl 3000 that are believed to do similar, but again limited research and it's not actually known how it works, just seen to work.

Not all retinoids are harsh, the newer generations come with less established research but as vitamin A derivatives they at least have a good potential to be effective. I'm currently using Medik8 R-Retinoate, it's zero irritation and extremely gentle. The downside is that these next gen formulations are substantially more expensive than the older generations. HPR is also pretty low irritancy, though often combined with traditional retinol so still possible to get irritated (personally I'm not convinced HPR on its own is all that effective and the results people are seeing is down to the traditional retinol).

On most the neck is a lot more sensitive (I'm an anomaly as that's the only the skin that doesn't appear to be sensitive). You don't have to take everything down the neck but you don't need special neck products either. You could choose to do a retinoid on the face and a peptide serum on the neck for example.

Koko, is the sunscreen you're using alcohol based? It really sounds like you're struggling with dryness and dehydration.

OP posts:
EnidButton · 06/02/2019 00:39

Koko whilst you get your skin balanced out, I think you need a less drying foundation. I'm not keen on the No7 texture and my skin in combo with no dryness really.

Lancôme teint idole is my holy grail foundation. Seems to be good for most skin types and their colour range is very good. (Good swatches of them online if you google) They do very generous samples if you ask at a counter.

Have you tried any hyaluronic acid products? A serum heavy in HA might be one thing that'd help the dehydration.

(Also la Roche posay Cicaplast b5 baume for really dry bits but I'm becoming a stuck record and they owe me commission by this point so I won't go on. Grin)

mintmagnummm · 06/02/2019 07:08

Please please please can someone shed any light on why I'm experiencing pilling every morning with my spf ALL OF A SUDDEN?! Literally nothing has changed, I allow the same amount of time as I always did between layers etc so why now?? Anyone?

Redandblue11 · 06/02/2019 07:44

Thank you Bo, Jdster, Sallie (not forgetting anyone I think) for your feedback. I will read a bit more and I might try the retinols.

RuggyPeg · 06/02/2019 08:25

Sallie - yes you can use purple shampoo to cool you down but Fanola have just brought out a no orange shampoo, which I use to cool down my blonde hair but it's specifically for cooling down darker hair like yours. Wear gloves when you use it though, as it's highly pigmented and will stain your hands.

SallieSallow · 06/02/2019 12:30

Thanks Ruggy I had seen that one on amazon and added it to my wish list so good to know it works. I might start using it now to get rid of some of the red before I dye it the cooler brown. The red fades superfast anyway so it's mainly just the ends where it's clinging on - but as most here know I have The Fear when it comes to having my hair cut so definitely won't be looking to get too much chopped off.

mintmagnummm · 06/02/2019 13:17

I emailed ultrasun about the pilling and they suggested using it without moisturiser....

Tsmummy08 · 06/02/2019 13:39

Sallie Sorry for the long delay, yes Timeless vit C is very watery, much like SC and Vichy IIRC.

Maybe no Profhilo for me then.... I'll wait for your NuFace reviews :) I've also decided to give up booze for a while - it'll be interesting to see if that has any effect on my haggardness!

RuggyPeg · 06/02/2019 16:39

I'm still seeing no magic transformation with nuface. I suspect fillers is the only real answer tbh.
