Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

I think alcohol definitely gives the face a ‘droop’ after a certain age Ts.

Planning on trying NuFace tonight.........

SallieSallow · 06/02/2019 20:06

Thanks Ts just ordered the timeless Vit c as they had 10% off as well, every little helps Smile

Agree with booze not being skin friendly, gives a whole new meaning to brewer’s droop Grin

GingerRogers84 · 07/02/2019 18:45

Hello, new to this series of threads (have read the sheets) but have been dabbling in skincare half-heartedly for a few years.
Recently I've decided to get serious about my skin care as I'm heading into my mid 30's and I've noticed things changing.
I'd say I have combination skin: dry cheeks, slightly oily t-zone and a bit of dehydration going on.
So in the morning I've been doing a light oil cleanse, followed by Revolution Caffeine eye Serum, a glycolic pad, a treatment of some sort, light moisturiser and a SPF. Evening is a double cleanse with hot cloth and oil, same eye serum, Revolution 30% AHA peel thing once a week otherwise its the glycolic pad again, a treatment and a night cream. The treatments are both by Revolution (hyaluronic acid and a retinol). I've not used the retinol yet.
This new routine has been going on a week and my skin has been feeling and looking good, however I now have a painful spot/bump on my chin (not hormonal). Is this possible purging? Is purging even a thing? Am I going over board on what I'm using?

botemp · 07/02/2019 19:01

A bit excessive on the glycolic would be my take, Ginger. It needs to be introduced gradually and personally I'd never use it more than 2 or 3 times a week and if you're doing the peel the. I'd just do that once a week, no other forms of exfoliation. Less is more is definitely the way to go with chemical exfoliation.

Hmm let me know how you like the timeless Sallie, I've seen they do a large value size and I've been on the lookout for one I can use all over the body for a while now. Although the idea of using that in the kitchen to slather up every morning isn't that appealing. May have to look into a mini bar again...

GingerRogers84 · 07/02/2019 20:00

Oh interesting! I've been using Superdrug radiance daily glycolic pads and thought I'd be ok with those. I'll knock them on the head for a bit me thinks! Smile

EnidButton · 07/02/2019 22:11

How do like the serum Ginger? Any good? I've always avoided caffeine in stuff for myself but think it might be worth a try now.

I'm being daring and trying an Elemis cream-oil tonight. It was a gift with purchase and has good reviews. None of my 'avoid' ingredients in it. I am due on next week though so won't put it on my hormonally temperamental chin. 😏

GingerRogers84 · 08/02/2019 08:18

@EnidButton I quite like the serum. It's fairly runny and you only need a tiny bit as it spreads quite easily. I think the bottle would last quite a while. I can't tell the long term effects yet but it really nicely moisturizes the eye area and isn't sticky or heavy.

I had an Elemis Rose Balm cleanser last year. It smelt divine and left my skin rather soft. Smile

SallieSallow · 08/02/2019 11:30

Timeless has been dispatched Bo I'm working away next week so not sure when I'll get my mitts on it but will update you once I've tried it out. The fridge thing is a bit of a pain, I don't bother over winter (just keep it in a drawer so cool and dark) but will have to remember once the weather warms up again. Or get a mini bar Grin

Ginger I think those superdrug pads are not as strong as a lot of glycolic toners out there but twice a day is still too much especially with the AHA peel as well. Agree with Bo that I'd just do the peel and ditch the pads.

How did you get on with the Elemis Enid? Have you ever had a look on QVC as they have some really good value kits and sets on there.

Pupsiecola · 08/02/2019 11:46

I like the LRP Cicaplast Gel. I've had a couple of days off actives and have been using just that and my skin is looking calmer.

Space NK have an offer on at the moment: £15 off orders over £60 on new beauty. I bought some DE Vit C, which I'm surprised was class as new as they've had it for a while. Still qualified for the free shipping, even with the discount.

EnidButton · 08/02/2019 12:23

Thank you Ginger. I have dark bits on my inner eye/nose bit that I could do with reducing a bit before using concealer. Happy with eye cream I use (Kiehl's avocado) but I think caffeine might help even just temporarily. I'll check it out.

Sallie Thank you, I'll keep an eye on qvc offers for next time. I took advantage of a couple of gifts with purchase that Elemis had on their site as I was buying anyway. I liked the oil/cream last night. Smells nice, good texture, cheeks feel more hydrated. No visible difference really but skinwise it's a rough time of the month. Grin

Pupsie The gel sounds very good. Are you using it all over or just on a problem area?

SallieSallow · 08/02/2019 13:00

I love that cicaplast gel - I use it all over Enid under or instead of moisturiser. I find it sinks in well and isn't sticky or tacky if you don't slather it on, I've used it under makeup and it's been fine.

I get still get e-mails from QVC about Elemis offers so will let you know next time. I love the smell of some of their stuff but sadly I can't use it Sad

Pupsiecola · 08/02/2019 13:34

I have been using it all over, and on its own, night and day. A little goes a long way.

EnidButton · 08/02/2019 15:30

Thanks Pups and Sallie, I might get some to try.

Sallie Thank you. I mainly like their body products (milk bath and salt scrub) and think I said ages ago about being a total sucker for their packaging, scents and marketing. Blush I like the papaya face mask and illuminating balm too.

Keep meaning to say the rose body wash I got, a couple of weeks ago, is so so good. Much better for my skin than the Dove I usually use. Leaves me feeling very smooth and I love the old rose scent. Definite repurchase.

GingerRogers84 · 08/02/2019 16:24

@EnidButton I have heard good things about the Ordinary's version. Apparently it has something extra in it that I can remember. But I was too impatient to order it and got the Revolution one from Superdrug.

Now when it comes to a Vitamin C serum, would one by Superdrug or Bodyshop suffice?

Pupsiecola · 08/02/2019 17:07

I saw an aesthetic nurse earlier about possible fillers. I have to say she was so complimentary and I came out buzzing. She said my skin is in really good condition and she said I have a lovely face and strong features (big mouth lol). She actually said (blush) "has anyone ever told you you look like Sandra Bullock"? Which made me laugh and I had to tell her the story of when DH and I met he told his mum I look like SB and his mum didn't know who that was so went to the local video store (22 years ago!) and said "do you have a video case with Sandra Bullock because my son's gf looks a bit like her". DH's crush was always SB. Of course I see very little resemblance.

Anyway, I've come way with a little spring in my step, and lots to think about (well, not much to think about because she definitely didn't go down the hard sell route).

SallieSallow · 09/02/2019 17:20

That’s a lovely compliment Pupsie Sandra Bullock is gorgeous.

Whereabouts are you (vaguely) in the U.K. as I’d love a consultation with no hard sell.

EnidButton · 09/02/2019 17:35

Sounds very positive Pupsie Smile Just goes to show we're not our own best judge.

Just seen this on Reddit. It's a household cleaning liquid, (I'm assuming it's American), that lists the purposes of each ingredient. Are there my skincare brands that do this on the actual packaging? It'd be a great move if more started doing this. Sometimes it hard to even find the ingredients at all. (Credit u/silevram)

*are there any

Ollivander84 · 09/02/2019 17:38

Little allbeauty shop. I got the perricone no lipstick (gorgeous pinky balm), aromatherapy associates cleansing balm, and Caudalie hand cream set

SallieSallow · 09/02/2019 18:35

Yes Enid Dawn is the US equivalent of Fairy liquid and I think the US have different (much stricter) rules about labels, possibly because of the litigiousness over there everyone feels the need to cover their asses Grin I’ve not seen that level of detail on any skincare (including stuff bought directly from the US) though but guess the print would have to be so tiny that not many people could/would read it. It should be on websites though and it is on some, Deciem are actually very good for this. I mainly just use the inci decoder website & have lost hours looking up all kinds on there Blush

Tsmummy08 · 09/02/2019 18:44

Olli I may have to have a look at that cleansing balm, ahem, I'm feeling a bit spendy at the moment :) I love balmy lip products too, and have been looking at the new Bobbi Brown ones. Much as I love the look of matte lipsticks, they don't do much for my crepey lips...

Pupsie what a lovely set of compliments! I often wonder what we all look like on the other side of the screen :)
I also got the DE vit C with that SpaceNK offer - in fact it arrived yesterday and the old one ran out this morning, I'm clearly psychic....

xxlucybxx · 09/02/2019 20:21

Does anyone have any advice for pregnancy hormonal flare ups??

I used to avidly use retinol, acids and vit c, aha peels etc. I've cut everything out since finding out I was pregnant (before Xmas)

My hormonal chin spots have gone mental and really aggressive. I look awful without makeup on now when I had decent skin.

Everything I read says acids are no no's when pregnant.

I'm currently using Cerave face wash, a bit of Nivea moisturiser and sometimes tea tea on the spots or a tiny bit of coconut oil. Nothing is helping. Not using these daily either I'm just trying to strip it back to see if it helps.

I'm on the brink of hunting out a dermatologist for help but I'm in a village and city's are an hour away.

The waistline is growing and my spotty face is making me feel even worse :( pregnancy glow is BS Hmm

Ollivander84 · 09/02/2019 20:23

@Tsmummy08 the perricone one is lovely, I'm not sure I would pay full price but it's like a tinted lip balm - but more a lipstick formula

mintmagnummm · 09/02/2019 20:44

Does everyone here use the lrp toleriane dermo cleanser?

SallieSallow · 09/02/2019 22:00

Lucy I’m not knowledgeable enough about what can/can’t be used in pregnancy to suggest anything as I thought salicylic acid was safe to use topically. Do you think it might be cystic acne? could be worth asking your regular GP before going to the derm. If they’re useless (which I know a lot of GPs are with skin problems) then I think the derm is probably your best bet.

Mint I use LRP toleriane caring cleanser - this one
