Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Sallie what's the difference between yours and the dermo-cleanse in terms of texture/creaminess/rinsability etc? I need to stock up on my second cleanser...

EnidButton · 09/02/2019 23:24

Love the look of that lipstick Olli. The lipgloss version looks good too. Just deciding which to get.

Sallie See what you mean about it ending up too tiny to read. I think with short ingredient lists it could work though. Maybe I'm just being lazy. Grin I stand in the shop googling ingredients sometimes. Getting better at recognising them but there's always some that are ???

mintmagnummm · 10/02/2019 07:30

Sallie thank you. Is there anything wrong with the dermo one? I wana buy it from boots if possible.

Ollivander84 · 10/02/2019 07:34

@EnidButton Grin it was on offer on allbeauty Wink came in a cracker so I'm presuming was a Christmas leftover!

Pupsiecola · 10/02/2019 09:28

TS do you keep you DE Vit C in the fridge? I might start to.

I'm in Hampshire.

SallieSallow · 10/02/2019 09:53

Thanks Pupsie I remember you telling me that before now Grin I’m looking for someone in the Manchester/Cheshire area. Plenty of them around but I’d like a word of mouth recommendation.

Enid you should sign up for inci decoder, it’s better (and quicker) than googling.

incidecoder.com

Ts and Mint I’ve never used the Dermo cleanser so can’t compare the two. I think it was the dermo one that JDSTER and a couple of others here said left a bit of a film after rinsing but could be wrong there. The caring wash is the only LRP cleanser I’ve ever tried/used and I’d definitely recommend it.

Pupsiecola · 10/02/2019 10:24

How did I not know about incidecoder!! What is the benefit of becoming a member?

SallieSallow · 10/02/2019 10:29

Pupsie I wanted to look up the ingredients list of something that wasn’t already on there so I had to register to upload it. If the item is already on there or you’re just looking up individual ingredients then you don’t need to sign up.

TantricTwist · 10/02/2019 15:11

Lucy it's probably best to wait it out till the end of your pregnancy and they may well just go of their own accord.

However there's nothing wrong with trying PC BHA if you're happy if it's safe enough to use ( I presume it is)

Pupsiecola · 10/02/2019 17:00

Thanks Sallie

RuggyPeg · 10/02/2019 17:12

North west area, Botox/filler recommendations - Dr Raphael Mohammed is fabulous. Think he has clinics in other locations too. Dermabella on outskirts of Preston is fab too and less expensive.

JDSTER · 10/02/2019 19:12

TS/mint re LRP cleansers. Dermo definitely leaves a film on my skin. I’m actually using the last bottle I own up currently, but as a first cleanse and removing with a cloth. The other one salie linked to is much better for rinseability and I use it every night as a second cleanse. Texture of the actual cleanser is quite similar to dermo in that it has that nice slip on the skin. I’d definitely recommend the newer one linked TS

pupsie I keep DE Vit C in the fridge.

mintmagnummm · 10/02/2019 19:21

Thank you Sallie and JDSTER. I think I vaguely remember using the dermo cleanser years ago actually and I obviously didn't like it as I'm not using it now 🙄😂.

I've stopped using my Clinique ttdo balm, trying to determine what it is that my skins not 100% happy with. Eyes don't feel as sensitive, not sure if it's a coincidence....

xxlucybxx · 10/02/2019 19:50

Thanks both. I guess I'll just have to ride it out bin the BB cream and go back to doublewear!!

SallieSallow · 10/02/2019 19:53

Thank you Ruggy Preston is probably a bit too far to be practical for me but will look up Dr Raphael. I’m going to give the nuface a fighting chance but if I’m not seeing any results in 6 months then fillers it will be.

botemp · 10/02/2019 20:11

Lucy, first off stop using coconut oil it's about the worst thing you can do with acne as it's highly comodonogenic.

You can safely use AHAs during pregnancy. BHA is a little more contested, up to 2% is considered safe but a lot of derms suggest not to use it all. Vitamin C also generally considered okay but L-AA Vitamin C can aggravate active acne.

I'd recommend pursuing Azelaic Acid, tends to be prescribed for pregnant women with acne issues and/or melasma. If your GP is unwilling you can go through the Boots acne clinic online, it's a pretty simple questionnaire type thing or you can do Dermatica- an online dermatologist service. Would be kind of expensive for the prescription vs. Boots or your GP but you may find a virtual hand hold helpful during this time, it's £20 p/m incl. of prescription medication. OTC at slightly lower concentration GOW 15% Azelaic Acid gets pretty good results as well.

You can also consider Vitamin C in SAP form (mad hippie and face theory both do one) it works similarly to benzoyl peroxide but without the grief and you'd have to check but pretty certain it's safe during pregnancy.

Blue light led masks may also be beneficial, the Neutrogena one isn't all that expensive, but again check about use with pregnancy.

How are you doing with sunscreen? Considering you're at elevated risk for pigmentation during pregnancy it's pretty essential but I know active acne and sunscreen rarely get along and going with an all mineral formulation often means more clogging.

Ginger, no, vitamin C is really something to be fussy about. Lowest budget I'd say have a look at the GOW 23% one or if you can spend a bit more the Timeless CE ferulic (15% IIRC) is probably a good bet. Both need to be kept in the fridge.

Damnit, the Elemis night cream/oil gas coconut oil high on the ingredients list. I was really liking it too. Skin looks much fresher and hydrated. Plus smoother where I had some under the skin bumps. I've been very impressed by it. It's only been 3 days though so...

Now wondering if I should quit whilst I'm ahead. Although usually I break out from products straight away or the next day.

RuggyPeg · 10/02/2019 22:55

I've got the GOW vit c. Not sure about it tbh. It goes on nicely but then goes v tacky. I doubt I'll repurchase. I'm yet to find a vit c I'm happy with. Any recs?

Tsmummy08 · 11/02/2019 08:09

Pupsie I don't keep DE vit C in the fridge, but I probably should (and have in the past). Possibly not so much of an issue in a chilly bathroom during winter?

Sallie/JDSTER I just ordered 2 large dermo-cleansers from EPP before reading that update - doh!! I've been ordering some French Pharmacy stuff before the inevitable price hikes next month.... might do another order start of March.

Olli ordered the No Lipstick, baaaaa! But not the cleanser... I had my head turned by a perfume and bought it without trying.... possibly a regretful purchase, we shall see!

Ollivander84 · 11/02/2019 08:30

@Tsmummy08 ooh which perfume?!

Pupsiecola · 11/02/2019 09:31

Thanks TS. I keep it in my bedroom, where I rarely have the heating on (and the bedroom is therefore warmer in the Summer, especially last year!). But for some reason with this bottle it's gone darker and there's the slight crusting around the nozzle, and I only bought it in late November so it feels like this has happened sooner. Previous bottles have last up to 6 months.

Tsmummy08 · 11/02/2019 11:42

@Ollivander84 Mugler Alien Musc Mysterieux - definitely not everyone's cup of tea but I love most of his fragrances and the reviews on Fragrantica swung it....

SallieSallow · 11/02/2019 12:51

Ruggy I have been using Medik8 C tetra which is a fairly weak/mild version compared to most as I've had issues in the past with Vit C making me itchy. No issues with this one and it's fine under makeup etc but not sure it's actually doing much so decided to try upgrading to something more potent again. I've ordered the Timeless Vit C & will review once I've tested, if it does make me itchy I might be looking to re-home it but will see how I go.

Pupsie I didn't keep the Medik8 in the fridge and it's been fine in a drawer over winter, my bedroom is quite cold apart from a couple of hours in the evening and morning. I'll do the fridge thing again once the weather warms up, find it a bit of a pain though as I don't eat breakfast and only drink a black coffee in the morning so tends to be out of sight and out of mind. I think some Vit Cs are less stable than others, the Vichy one 'turned' on me really quickly but it is meant to be used within a month.

Cosmoplease · 11/02/2019 15:02

Can I join please? Smile

Heading for my mid 30's and noticed a fair bit of ageing recently, mainly in the form of sagging and fine lines. Also my nose to mouth lines, but apparently there's no serum or cream in the world that will sort those. It's fillers or live with it Sad Is this really true?!....

I have always tried to look my skin with serums, SPF etc, but need to rev up my routine I think.

Can I ask more about vit c serums? I'm using Superdrugs own brand, which seems....ok, but I thought this was more a brightener than anti ageing, but am hearing different things on here. I used to use P&P Advanced No 7 serum and really liked it, but ran out recently and fancied a change.

Just started using Viola retinol serum, so haven't seen any results yet. Has anyone tried this? I'm starting with every third night.
