Clothes shops that disappeared

Was just googling "petite maxi skirt" (seems to be a rarity) and Pilot came up as an option. Remember pilot?! Didn't know it was still going. Which then reminded me of similar store Bay Trading which I used to love as a teen. And etam!

Any others you lot remember?

Oh and if you know any good places to get a petite maxi skirt for a wedding do let me know, I'm really struggling here.

C&A I loved that. It's still going in Europe

confusedandemployed · 21/07/2017 06:57

Pilot and Bay Trading were always next door to each other.

I really miss Etam.

metalmum15 · 21/07/2017 07:14

I loved Pilot and Bay Trading. Think I may still have a couple of things from there in my wardrobe. ...Also Mark One for cheapy bargains. And C&A and Chelsea Girl when I was a kid.

chipscheeseandcurrysauce · 21/07/2017 07:16

Tammy in Etam
Internationale (it was always with Accessorize)
Republic

LoniceraJaponica · 21/07/2017 07:17

Chelsea Girl - or did that become River Island?
BHS. I know they sold a lot of frumpy clothes, but I used to find the odd gem in there. Going through my wardrobe the other day I realised that I have quite a few bits from there garnered over the years.

Undercoverbanana · 21/07/2017 07:18

Chelsea Girl.

Couldn't afford it but I loved it as a teen in the mid 80s. I still remember the blue carrier bags with the brightly coloured squares. The sign of cool (posh) kids. Sigh.

LightastheBreeze · 21/07/2017 07:22

BHS, though it's often laughed at on here, I alway bought my cotton cropped trousers from there which I wear loads round the house and on holiday, also DH liked their chinos. They also had a very good cheap beachwear/holiday section which I miss. I miss C & A also, which was also a similar shop.

GrumpySausage · 21/07/2017 07:25

I miss C&A. Also Tammy girl? Often used to find a gem in there.

fruityb · 21/07/2017 07:26

Chelsea girl is miss Selfridge I believe.

I loved Bay Trading - used to find some right little gems in there!

peterkin · 21/07/2017 07:27

I remember Bay Trading!

We still have C&A where I live (non-UK) and it's fantastic for kids' clothes. I believe it's a Dutch company.

I miss River Island as it used to be, it's way too trendy for me now or I'm way too old.

CoolCarrie · 21/07/2017 07:27

I was in a C & A last week in Amsterdam, and it had lots of fashionable stuff; embroidered pieces etc.

Almostthere15 · 21/07/2017 07:28

I had some good work dresses from bhs, it was always reliable for a shift dress. But it was so muddled that it's no surprise it's no longer with us.

I loved bay trading and mark one as a teen, I don't think I'd still buy things from there now though.

On a petite note have you tried Ben de lisi petite at debenhams?

Argeles · 21/07/2017 07:28

Mark One.
Quality Seconds.
Freeman Hardy Willis (shoe shop).

Etam still exists in France, and they also have separate Etam lingerie shops - they sell some lovely items.

CoolCarrie · 21/07/2017 07:29

And, as pp said the kids stuff looked lovely too.

SinglePringle · 21/07/2017 07:30

Chelsea Girl did indeed become River Island. Miss Selfridge still exists (was in it yesterday).

LaurieFairyCake · 21/07/2017 07:30

What every woman wants - like Primark

The skirt and slack centre - lined pencil skirts with stretch

Goingtobeawesome · 21/07/2017 07:31

Principles.

chipscheeseandcurrysauce · 21/07/2017 07:31

@LoniceraJaponica yep Chelsea Girl was River Island's previous name!

chipscheeseandcurrysauce · 21/07/2017 07:32

Jane Norman... for the carrier bags, the clothing was market stall tat!

AlpacasPackOwls · 21/07/2017 07:35

I used to love Pilot and Bay Trading as a teen! Ah, memories...

megletthesecond · 21/07/2017 07:37

Morgan

SnugglySnerd · 21/07/2017 07:37

Dolcis for shoes.

There was an amazing jeans shop in Birmingham called Bankrupt. I don't know if it was a chain but they stocked every size, brand and style of jeans. The staff would do all the running backwards and forwards to the changing room with more sizes and they had people sat at sewing machines to do alterations while you wait. I really miss that shop. If there is one somewhere else I'd definitely travel there!

LoniceraJaponica · 21/07/2017 07:38

Principles are in Debenhams now. Tammy Girl used to be in BHS.

I do miss BHS. I must have been their only customer.
