Loving this...
I remember a custard yellow, cotton jumpsuit I had from Tammy Girl back in 1982. Loved it.
Anyone else remember the Gloria Vanderbilt jeans for girls? They were skinny, but stretchy and had a little embroidered swan on the front pocket and coloured stitching down the seams. You could buy co-ordinating t-shirts.
I can remember back when Next was posh. Their stores had gleaming wooden flooring, subtle lighting and you could easily blow £60 on a sweater back in 1989.
I remember Solo - a more upmarket version of Next. Lots of minimal, glossy white shelving and bright lights.
Same with River island when it first opened. Their stores had dark wooden shelving, brass light fittings and rugs. It was a bit like shopping in a Victorian emporium.
I had my first ever Saturday job selling shoes in Saxone. Hated it.
Anyone else remember the craze for Benetton jumpers in the mid-80s? My parents bought me a cherry red, lambswool, batwing jumper from there, with red sparkly edging at the hem and cuffs. I thought it a thing of great beauty....When I was at 6th form college I had a Saturday job in Benetton. I can still fold sweaters perfectly and in about 3 seconds flat
I had a long, sleeveless, cotton, button-through dress from Miss Selfridge, printed in pale pink/green cabbage roses...I loved, loved, loved that dress (worn with heavy brogues) and wore it until it fell apart.
I do know that Press & Bastayan took over Karen Millen about 12 years ago.
Anyone else remember Vickerstaff's stationary shops? They were gorgeous - sold brightly coloured writing paper with matching envelopes. Little glitter pencils and scented erasers. And unusual greeting cards and expensive plush Snoopy toys. It was My Shop Of Dreams when I was 10...
For anyone else who grew up in Nottingham - remember The Reject Shop, in the Victoria Centre? Very early 80s trendy. Sold brightly coloured bean bags, quirky stationary, cool gadgets and miscellany... My friends and I used to spend most of our Saturdays in there.
