It may only be October but Christmas is fast approaching and many of us are already planning for the holiday by thinking about presents, food, and decorations. As well as decking out our home with baubles, Christmas time is also a nudge to get all those niggly DIY home improvements done. Bunnings would like to find out which DIY tasks you’d like to complete before Christmas and any advice you would like for doing them. They will then pick the most popular DIY challenge and create a video of tips and tricks for doing it. We will be sharing this video on another thread in a few weeks time, so keep an eye out!

Whether you want to spruce up your bathroom, put up some new shelving, or give your lounge a new lick of paint, please share your Christmas DIY challenges below and you will be entered into a prize draw to win a £200 voucher of your choice (from a list).

Event - RECRUITMENT NOW CLOSED

Bunnings, the new store for home improvement is having a Grand Opening celebration on the 4th November and would like to recruit 10 Mumsnetters (and their partners/ families if they want to bring them along) to come along to the grand opening and check out the store. All participants will be given a £20 Bunnings voucher on the day and will be required to leave their feedback on a thread on Mumsnet. If you can share an image or post of the event on Facebook, Twitter and/or Instagram as well that would be great! You can enjoy face painting, balloon modelling and even join Peppa Pig and George for a story time session. Activities are between 11am - 3pm, see bunnings.co.uk/our-stores/harlow for details.

If you’re interested in taking part, sign up here. All event attendees that leave their feedback on the feedback thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £100 voucher of your choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

I've realised that my skirting boards are battered and could do with a repaint. And the radiators are looking a but knackered too.
So my question/s would be - can I repaint radiators? If so, do I just use paint suitable for metal, do I need to key the surface, and can I put the heating on before they've totally dried?

Oh where to start! Need to re grout the bathroom , but thinking of grey grout due to leaving with dirty mechanics who leave oily soap scum everywhere. But would really love to do my bedroom.

We are going to decorate our porch, including painting and building a new built in shoe rack. Random I know but actually quite important at this time of year all those muddy wellies to put away!

We are planning to repaint each room and finally get the beading put down around the laminate in our lounge. Smile

We need to build some flat pack chairs for the extra people around the dinner table, and build some extra side tables for drinks etc to be put on over Christmas so everyone has one close enough no matter where they are sitting

I'm determined to finish decorating my sitting-room, and the job I'd like a tip about is the best way of dealing with skirting-boards covered in old, chipped paint.

We've almost finished a building project so we have two bedrooms that the children are dying to move into, but they need skirtings and walls painted, flooring sorted, and some coving put up in one. Plus an array of small stuff: toilet roll holders put up, lights fitted, that sort of thing.
Oh, and then we need to think about the front room which now looks very tired, and needs new paint, and the front bedroom also. Actually, the list is almost endless!

There’s a list of things that need doing in terms of DIY:

  1. The hall walls need repainted (after 3.5 years living here, there’s lots of grubby kids handprints & marks)
  2. the garden shed roof requires re-felting & repainted
  3. Would love to redecorate the front room, but it’s a big job (re-painting/papering, new curtains/blinds)
  4. The fence between us & next door is pretty rotten & could do with replacing.
  5. In an ideal world, I’d like to replace the carpet & put in the bedrooms, and replace the cheap laminate.
  6. I have bought wallpaper for DD’s room & would like to get someone in to do it.

Ok, I’ll stop now before I get carried away.....

We have started on the hall but I need to finish it. So I will be sanding and painting before Christmas!
What is the best way to hide radiator pipes that go up the wall?

Boarding the loft so we can store all our excess stuff there and clear some space before Christmas. Potentially even hide the presents up there too as DD isn't allowed up there.

Definitely spruce up the lounge. New paint, change dodgy light fittings and get decent curtains that retain some bloomin heat. It feels a bit cold and austere at the moment.

I am trying to decorate the stairs and landing. I have done nearly all the woodwork but I need to replace a built in cupboard door as ds pushed it the wrong way and split it. I would like to know the best way to put the hinges on a new door.

Then I have to paint and wallpaper the walls. I have done quite a bit of this before but am worried about being high up a ladder on the stairs so any tips on how to do that safely would be great.

We're hopefully moving house before Christmas. The ne house needs some serious TLC. On top of non DIY issues like needing a new roof, there's holes in the plasterboard that we'll need to fix and the walls all need a good lick of paint, anyhow.

So many things need doing. The main one I'm focusing on is moving the inaccessible loft hatch from the box room to the landing, adding a drop down ladder and adding partial boarding up there to store Xmas stuff when not in season. No idea where to start! I will definitely need someone in to do the labour but how big a job is it really?

I need to clean and repaint my log burner before Christmas, it has gone dull and matt, I have bought the paint, just need to sand it down, put masking tape around the area and on day I can open the windows give it a makeover ready for the big day.
