The Christmas festivities are now over, which means it’s time for New Year’s resolutions, re-evaluating our finances and staying in on those long, cold nights. But it doesn’t all need to be doom and gloom… it’s also the perfect time for you and your family to escape with a film, or get stuck into a new TV show – and Netflix has plenty to choose from!

We want to know what you’ll be watching on Netflix to beat the winter blues. Are you enjoying the quirky police comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine? Perhaps you’re catching up on House of Cards in preparation for season 3 in February? Maybe you’ll be indulging in an episode of Breaking Bad?

We’d also like to know what, if anything, your kids love watching on Netflix. Are the little ones obsessed with Spongebob Squarepants? Do they wind down before bed with a Disney film like Toy Story 3 or Brave? Or maybe your teenager is hooked on Gossip Girl? Whatever it is, we’d love to hear about it!

Tell us how your family will be using Netflix to beat the winter blues, and you’ll be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win an Xbox One* and a 6 months subscription to Netflix!

Thanks

MNHQ

I loved Netflix. For about 6 months. Then we had watched everything there was to watch and now it just languishes there. Sorry but it is not fit for purpose (yes I know I can watch US netflix through a proxy but really shouldn't have to!)

We only watch on demand TV (Amazon prime, iplayer, CH4 catchup, blink box and netflix). I can't remember the last time we actually watched anything on Netflix.

The other day my DP was looking for Oceans 11. It wasn't even on there. How old is that film?! Even the 'coming soon' and 'new films' are straight to DVD crap. Will probably get rid by the end of the month.

We've all loved Orange is the New Black. Have now started watching Grimm which is looking good. My teenage daughter loves the old Disney films.

Riseoftheflarelovers · 12/01/2015 12:24

Derek, quick name change and say how much we love Toy Story? Grin

Cocolepew · 12/01/2015 12:29

House Of Cards. CANNOT WAIT.

Cocolepew · 12/01/2015 12:30

PS we love Netflix in our house, give us the freebies . Ta.

diamondsrock · 12/01/2015 12:38

Looking forward to more House of Cards. Have started on Orange is the New Black which is great as well.

VikingLady · 12/01/2015 13:14

DD watches Pocoyo, I'm all TV'd out!

mazza1974 · 12/01/2015 13:24

We loved watching breaking bad fantastic series my children are teenagers so they into all the things like gossip girl ! Breaking bad, broad church. True detectives silent witness - the missing loved homeland too always gutted when we get to the last one. !

momofmonster · 12/01/2015 13:32

I've just finished watching Grimm which has been great and now watching pretty little liars!

It gets most use out of my nan though as that is who i pay for it for. She always finds something to watch - at the moment she loves the paradise and death in paradise and foyles war. Then when she is babysitting ds she will use it to put on the lego programmes or horrid henry.

We do tend to watch more programmes than films but it is well used by me and my family.

Aubasaurus · 12/01/2015 13:32

We've just started watching series 2 of House of Cards - I'm currently 4 months pregnant and it's one of the few programmes I can manage to stay awake for in the evenings! DD loves the old Thomas the Tank engine episodes as well, not so keen on the newer ones or the films.

glasgowlass · 12/01/2015 13:38

Netflix is a god send in our house! I've watched Dexter from start to finish, Orange Is The New Black is the one I've been recommending to all who will listen.
My DP has rewatched Prison Break from the beginning and my DS1 watches all his favourite cartoons on his tablet & WiiU. Turbo Fast is his new favourite & gives me valuable time to get things done around the home. DS2 is 21 months and shouts "choo choo" when he sees the Netflix logo....he's all about Thomas the Tank Engine!
I'm looking forward to having time to watch House from the beginning. House of Cards is very high up on my 'to watch' list. Honesty cant imagine not having Netflix now! We can always find something to watch when terrestrial & Virgin TV seems unappealing.

I have a hungry one month old who likes long feeds through the night and Netflix is keeping me sane. I'm currently glued to Homeland again. Watched them on TV but enjoying Carrie and Brody's love story all the more second time round.

Just started series three though and just as I felt first time round it lost its way here. I may persevere with it but if not I've heard good things about House of Cards.

Orange is the New black is easily the best thing I've watched on Netflix.

For the kids when I'm feeding the baby during the day it's nice to snuggle in bed with the ipad and let them watch one of the shorts from the kids section. Over christmas they watched some of the Christmas movies too.

lostinlego · 12/01/2015 13:44

We've just started watching Sons of Anarchy, and the kids love watching Top gear, sponge bob, and ninjago. It's well used here.

VitoCorleoneAgain · 12/01/2015 13:58

Just started watching series 3 of Breaking Bad, absolutely fantastic, id even go as far as saying its the new Sopranos

Plenty for the kids to watch too, especially all the movies like Toy Story, Monsters Inc etc which they will watch over and over.

aristocat · 12/01/2015 14:01

Another fan of Netflix here too!

DH and myself love Lilyhammer and House of Cards. Steven Van Zandt is so funny .... he is compulsive viewing.

We had previously watched Breaking Bad together and we are seriously deciding whether to watch it all over again?

My daughter likes searching through the family films, one of her favourites is Parent Trap. She also loved the Spy next door (Jackie Chan) and this was the first time she had seen Mr Chan. He was a success Smile I like the suggestions offerred and we often browse these and find a film which we might not have considered.

Although some old(er) films which you might expect to find are not available. Kindergarten Cop for example. This can be a disappointment.

GooseyLoosey · 12/01/2015 14:04

Ds 11 absolutely loves The House of Anubis.

Dd really likes some of the older cartoon series like Redwall and Dogtanian and the Muskahounds.

When we settle down to flims as a family, we find that we have seen a lot of the big disney films at the cinema and often end up watching older films - Mrs Doubtfire, Three men and a baby and The Secret Garden. Lots of great old gems out there that in some cases have passed out of memory and it's really great to come across them. We look up lists of great family films and some films on the lists are quite hard to find on streaming services.

bucksmum71 · 12/01/2015 14:13

House of cards & breaking bad here to get us through January!

loudarts · 12/01/2015 14:25

I'm re watching the vampire diaries, yes I have them on blu-Ray but it's easier to put Netflix on. My 12 month old loves barney and friends

Clueing4looks · 12/01/2015 14:31

The kids are mostly watching Doctor Who and ever after high. I seem to spend more time choosing something to watch than actually watching it. I tend to search for an actor rather than a film so Will be watching anything starring Mark Ruffalo or James McAvoy.

iamhopeful · 12/01/2015 15:59

We stayed with family over christmas, they had netflix and got us into Lie to me, Covert affairs and The good wife. Would love the free 6 months

PonyMcBony · 12/01/2015 16:18

Orange is the new black, halfway thru breaking bad. Youngest ds watches power rangers, some films are ok, why o why though is the content not the same as the US which is far superior?

nightswift · 12/01/2015 16:25

I will be rewatching house of cards to get ready for series 3 yipee. Love watching old good wife's too!

halestone · 12/01/2015 16:27

I love watching box sets as i think TV is generally quite rubbish now i also hate waiting for the next episode a week later.

My favourite box sets have been Hannibal and i'm just about to start season 2 of the blacklist.

My Dd aged 2 loves Max and Ruby and was loving Spongebob until i brought her a spongebob toy for Christmas which she took an instant dislike too. So now hates Spongebob on TV too.
