What are you watching on Netflix to beat the winter Blues? Xbox One console and a 6 months subscription to Netflix to be won! *NOW CLOSED*

The Christmas festivities are now over, which means it’s time for New Year’s resolutions, re-evaluating our finances and staying in on those long, cold nights. But it doesn’t all need to be doom and gloom… it’s also the perfect time for you and your family to escape with a film, or get stuck into a new TV show – and Netflix has plenty to choose from!

We want to know what you’ll be watching on Netflix to beat the winter blues. Are you enjoying the quirky police comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine? Perhaps you’re catching up on House of Cards in preparation for season 3 in February? Maybe you’ll be indulging in an episode of Breaking Bad?

We’d also like to know what, if anything, your kids love watching on Netflix. Are the little ones obsessed with Spongebob Squarepants? Do they wind down before bed with a Disney film like Toy Story 3 or Brave? Or maybe your teenager is hooked on Gossip Girl? Whatever it is, we’d love to hear about it!

Tell us how your family will be using Netflix to beat the winter blues, and you’ll be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win an Xbox One* and a 6 months subscription to Netflix!

Thanks

I've persuaded quite a few people to watch Orange Is The New Black.

Also working my way (disturbingly quickly) through Gossip Girl.

LittleMissRayofHope · 12/01/2015 21:57

Was completely addicted to Breaking Bad in December. Then went through Likyhammer (was it supposed to be such a comedy?) and now onto House.
Can. Not. Wait. For house of cards Kevin spacey obsessed

I love series and dramas and suchlike and this on demand format is great as I have 2 small children (2.5 and 17wks) so watching actual scheduled tv is a long forgotten past time!!

The toddler sometimes gets to watch various things; Thomas, Pingu, Dora etc, so that keeps her happy too.

At £6 a month, worth it.

Orangeisthenewbanana · 12/01/2015 22:28

I'm just finishing up Season 2 of House of Cards, then it will be Season 6 of Sons of Anarchy Smile.

DH and I are switching between Breaking Bad and Brooklyn Nine Nine, depending on our mood! Was a bit unsure how BNN would work over a whole series but so far it's hilarious!

DD (2yo) has decided she is no longer interested in In The Night Garden on CBeebies, so we've used Netflix a few times to give her a little post teatime treat. She adored Room on the Broom, as she loves the book. She also loved The Aristocats which we treated her to on Christmas Eve - she spent the whole time shouting "cat!", "mouse!" Grin

Eventually, hopefully I'll manage it in 2015, I hope to get around to watching my username-sake, Orange Is The New Black, as friends have been raving about it!

Orangeisthenewbanana · 12/01/2015 22:30

Oh bloody hell, just fully read the OP. Another season of House of Cards!? Next month?! There just aren't enough hours in the day! Grin

RiverTam · 12/01/2015 22:32

well, I've just read that Halt and Catch Fire with the delicious Lee Pace is now on Netflix, though whether that's here or just in the US I don't know, but if it's here I might consider subscribing. If not, I'm off to get my free month from Amazon Prime.

Albiebee · 12/01/2015 22:33

More Orange is the New Black please! DH is currently re-watching Dexter. And we just watched an amazing film with Tom Hardy, Locke, it was fab.

FabulousFudge · 12/01/2015 22:36

Orange is the new Black is amazing!

OMGmetoo · 12/01/2015 22:36

DH has decided to see what all the fuss is about Farscape so we are watching that. Apparently we have to watch 19 50-minute episodes before it even starts to get good.

Oy vey.

Sixgeese · 12/01/2015 22:44

We haven't got Netflix, but are currently thinking about replacing Sky, paying almost £800 a year for TV and a very poor broadband makes me think there must be something better out there.

If Netflix has Game of Thrones that would be a reason to change.

Marmalade1144 · 12/01/2015 22:50

I'll be watching house of cards new series, my husband has just discovered oranges are not the only fruit and the kids love all the great films you have!!

JessesGirl · 12/01/2015 23:32

I am currently completely hooked on Sons of Anarchy I may be turning my DTs into miniature bikers so that is all I am watching at the moment. I did try House of Cards but couldn't really get into it, I may try again though. Have made my way through OITNB (three times!!), Breaking Bad and The Good Wife - all amazing!
I find the film selection on Netflix really limited though although the kids choice isn't too bad. Just a few more up to date films each month and it would be an excellent service!

GratefulHead · 13/01/2015 10:08

I loved Breaking Bad and my son is addicted to Netflix Kids. Now I am working my way through House. Loving it,

Enb76 · 13/01/2015 10:11

Why can I not get Parks and Recreation on the UK Netflix? It's all I want.

irishe · 13/01/2015 10:18

Just finished watching white collar and starting sons of anarchy. In the past have loved lillyhammer. Really looking forward to house of cards.

Purplehonesty · 13/01/2015 10:52

Love Netflix! We are watching scandal at the moment and will move into orange is the new black next.
Films are good too.
Haven't really let the kids use is as they already watch too much tv in my opinion!
But in the evenings we love a good box set to watchz

ImCatbug · 13/01/2015 12:09

We use Netflix in our house so much, we forget we even have a Virgin Media box at the TV! Genuinely considering getting rid of Virgin and cancelling our TV licence as we never use it, we're so hooked on Netflix and online (catch-up) TV.

I work from home a lot, an experience which is greatly improved by having a tv series or movie on in the background, and for that Netflix is a godsend! I've worked my way through a lot of boxsets, my favourites being House, Orange is the New Black (3 times!), Arrested Development, Breaking Bad, American Horror Story, and my guilty pleasure, RuPaul's Drag Race. Blush
I love the number of Channel 4 series' on there too, so much easier to watch them on Netflix than 4OD.
When I have to focus more, some mindless fun movies are great, like the Disney movies and comedies (I think I've watched Clueless 100 times already).

In the evenings, DH and I like to sit in bed and watch something to wind down, being able to bring up whatever we want on the laptop or Kindle is so useful. We're currently making our way through Brooklyn Nine Nine (and loving it), and are planning to watch Marco Polo afterwards.
We're also really loving the old cartoons on there, going back and re-living our childhood favourites like Powerpuff Girls and the original Pokemon (you can probably tell we're only in our 20's).

The little ones I look after absolutely adore Thomas the Tank Engine, Bob the Builder and Dinosaur Train. The autoplay feature is brilliant for shows like Thomas, so I don't have to get up to put a new episode on every 5 minutes, I can just let it run through a few episodes while I get food ready/tidy up!

ImCatbug · 13/01/2015 12:13

We've also saved a lot of money from not going to the cinema very much.
Staying home, snuggled in bed with a new movie on Netflix > going out in the cold to get to the cinema and then paying extortionate ticket and food prices to watch a movie.
Frugal laziness Grin

RumbaRumba · 13/01/2015 12:15

The kids binge on spongebob whenever they get the chance. Ds2 was obsessed with power Rangers until recently and there are thousands of episodes on Netflix!

We've loved Breaking Bad, Orange is the New Black and House of Cards and are are now enjoying Nurse Jackie, Pretty Little Liars and Suits.

Still loads on there for us to get through!

glasgowlass · 13/01/2015 13:40

Have to agree with pervious posters on the US v UK Netflix. The US content is much more varied, more box sets and far superior (IMO). Can we please have additional content here?

Cirsium · 13/01/2015 13:50

Have had netflix for a couple of years now and rarely watch live TV (keep the licence cos DH does sometimes). I'm 36 weeks pregnant and enjoying watching more TV than usual guilt free. We got Apple TV at Christmas mainly to be able to watch through TV now our PC is in another room. Finished The Office at the weekend, Currently watching the second series of House on my own and Homeland and Grim with DH. We also watched some of Black Mirror, Flight and The Railway Man over Christmas and will get back to Orange is the New Black at some point.

I love the fact I can watch programmes on various devices on my own profile so I can find my place easily and think it is great value for money.

MrsTrix · 14/01/2015 05:59

We're all just getting into Merlin on Netflix. Seems like the kids would like it too, so we'll introduce them to it! Netflix has also got nearly all of our favourite sci-fi shows, so we've been indulging! Stargate (Thanks for adding SGU!) Farscape, TNG... TOO much brilliant TV! Then, of-course, there's Buffy. Best show ever. Fact!

benfoldsfive · 14/01/2015 08:24

My Dd has less freedom than her friends ( not allowed to play on the park at 8 in the rain and cold Hmm ). So we have stayed watching being human together as a bonding experience. It's been awesome. Trying to explain to her than first time round we had to wait a week for the next episode and a year for the next series, she was Shock

Me and Dh are watching breaking bad when the dc are in bed as of next week. So looking forward to that.

Pickofthepops · 14/01/2015 10:36

We watch Dr who, the new king Julien series (Madagascar), and loads of films with DS age 6 nearly seven.

I like the inbetweeners for light hearted relief and films. Dh enjoying a catch up of the a team!

ThedementedPenguin · 14/01/2015 12:49

I'm currently re watching gossip girl and pretty little liars.

Before this I have been enjoying some cheesy chick flicks gbf, just go with it, etc.

I am loving Netflix, even more so because my son can watch his shows on my iPad while I have my stuff on the tv.

He is watching Fireman Sam, Horrid Henry, Pingu and from today Curious George. He's a little young to watch the movies but we have tried some of the Disney ones, he enjoys them for a while but then wanders off.

Cannot wait to find a new show to watch. Really loving my Netflix.

ditavonteesed · 14/01/2015 13:26

I am currently watching skins, and sons of anarchy, I will be follwing this up with Misfits. Dh likes catching up on all the old dr who and the kids like mia and me and the barbie cartoons. We seem to watch netflix more than normal telly at the moment.
