The Christmas festivities are now over, which means it’s time for New Year’s resolutions, re-evaluating our finances and staying in on those long, cold nights. But it doesn’t all need to be doom and gloom… it’s also the perfect time for you and your family to escape with a film, or get stuck into a new TV show – and Netflix has plenty to choose from!

We want to know what you’ll be watching on Netflix to beat the winter blues. Are you enjoying the quirky police comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine? Perhaps you’re catching up on House of Cards in preparation for season 3 in February? Maybe you’ll be indulging in an episode of Breaking Bad?

We’d also like to know what, if anything, your kids love watching on Netflix. Are the little ones obsessed with Spongebob Squarepants? Do they wind down before bed with a Disney film like Toy Story 3 or Brave? Or maybe your teenager is hooked on Gossip Girl? Whatever it is, we’d love to hear about it!

Tell us how your family will be using Netflix to beat the winter blues, and you’ll be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win an Xbox One* and a 6 months subscription to Netflix!

Thanks

MNHQ

We have decided to rewatch Breaking Bad again before we watch the Saul spin off that's just starting. Sooo glad Breaking Bad is on Netflix, I don't have to buy DVDs ever again!

cococthecat · 02/02/2015 18:59

At the moment I'm watching old episodes of The Inbetweeners which definitely gets me through the winter blues but I also enjoy watching The Tudors which is my guilty secret lol. The rest of the family love watching the movies usually a disney/pixar film, though I caught the 8 year old trying to watch a horror movie the other day. Thank god for the parental features lol

Pimientos100 · 02/02/2015 21:51

Dexter! Addicted!! :-)

MissSingerbrains · 02/02/2015 21:53

We are currently watching Breaking Bad - we have never seen it before and I can finally see what all the fuss was about, as I love it! So brilliant to be able to catch up on a couple of episodes every night, on these horrible cold winter evenings... speaking of which, I've got some watching to do! :)

confusedofengland · 02/02/2015 22:06

My mistake, I got it mixed up with Breaking Bad - I knew it was alliterative, at least Grin

NoodleFace · 03/02/2015 07:04

Had netflix for at least 18 months and still find good things to watch.

Very very very excited for house of cards, that is our all time favourite.

We are watching films atm, case 39 was just a little a lot creepy!

My little boy has discovered animal mechanicals after watching all of the fireman sams, twice!

oneofeachkind · 03/02/2015 10:23

the kids constantly have Netflix on as they know what they like and tend to watch the same ones over and over, they find Netflix quick and easy to us. They watch....Toy Story, Brave, Postman Pat the movie and lazy town.
I really want to get into 'Orange is the new black' but haven't had the time as of yet, its on my to do list!!

Candycandle · 03/02/2015 12:16

Breaking bad and orange is the new black. Netflix I'd great for binge watching!

ethelb · 03/02/2015 13:33

We are totally getting aquainted with House of Cards!

cdwales · 03/02/2015 13:42

My teens gave me a subscription to Netflix and I am hooked!
Just finished Dexter and am still in thrall to that amazing series. Plus
Firefly, White Collar, Prison Break, Misfits...

DorothyBastard · 03/02/2015 13:46

I'm currently working my way through the U.S. Office, which I personally think is funnier than the British version.

I binge watched OITNB and loved every second of it, managed to get my SIL hooked too. Can't wait for the next season.

I'm also really excited about Better Call Saul coming this month.

My DD, who turns 2 this month, loves Caillou, and watched the Caillou Christmas movie a few times in December. She is also a big fan of Pocoyo.

cherrytree63 · 04/02/2015 07:06

I was totally hooked on the Killing. I'm actually trying to get amnesia so I can watch it again after my upcoming surgery.
Ditto Luther, Sherlock and Whitechapel (hopefully the latest Whitechapel will be on by then).
I must say, though, that I find it easier to browse Netflix when I'm watching it on the website, rather than the tv app, where I have to put in specific titles.
Happy to see that PPs have said Silent Witness is on Netflix, haven't been able to find that so far but will have another look today!

LackingCommonSense · 04/02/2015 13:58

I've recently signed up for the free month and am watching Breaking Bad for the first time. I plan to watch Orange is the new Black too. Was disappointed that the Gruffalo wasn't available but luckily Amazon Prime have it. DS loves it.

SaphireSaf · 04/02/2015 21:59

Currently watching Prison Break and DS loves watching anything cartoony.

mumsay · 04/02/2015 22:40

Well, I have this thing with Netflix, that whenever I finish watching anything I always give myself three searches and then I have to watch something within the next three choices - saves valuable searching time. So, this is how I came upon 'Sons of Anarchy' , with Clay and the boys and the strangely Brad Pitt cloned Jax and I sat unmoved throughout the first three episodes before WHAM - it suddenly became a monstrous hit with me, Tats 'n cuts 'n all. This is true bllcks genius TV. I can't guess a single outcome to a single episode and I never thought I would burn holes in the box again quite like I did with 'Breaking Bad' but the Sons is SMOKING ! I am mentally saved from the mind-devastation of my husband's impending redundancy and kick-ass heroine Gemma is my role model from now on ! Yep, as far as I'm concerned there is no point in sitting down to winter goggling unless you are totally brain dead by the end of it. I never even sniff the TV in summer as the lure of the grassy nooks of my garden are far too tempting. But I load up the episodes and off I go and rely on my family to log at which point oblivion takes hold of me and I crash out in a heap next to the dog brain-fried with episode after mind boggling episode..fanbl**dytastic !

mjmooseface · 05/02/2015 20:43

I seem to have posted this on the wrong thread! So copied and pasted it to here!

A series I had just started watching on Amazon Instant Video disappeared when I was half way through watching - grrr! - so I hopped back onto Netflix and went through my list and settled on watching Educating Yorkshire! It's such a lovely documentary and mostly always makes me smile! It has reaffirmed my desire to become a teacher!

ZanyGran13 · 05/02/2015 22:27

If you get winter blues badly, think about hiring a light box to see if you improve. You need to be near the light, but not staring at it, you can watch tv, knit sew and still have the benefit of the light. You then trick your brain into thinking it isn't winter, but perhaps spring. You can then buy the box if it works for you. It transformed my life in Lancashire, I had SAD look at SADA website. I now live in Tenerife and have much more light in my day and no need for a light box. It is important to exercise and meet people too. Get yourself moving to introduce some feel good hormones to your system. Good luck

Lots of random films I wouldn't ordinarily think of watching

Miathecat · 07/02/2015 07:48

This thread has been great for ideas of what to watch next. Have worked our way through orange is the new black (twice) dexter, house of cards, the bridge, the killing, house of cards and Luther. Hubby and I never used to watch tv together at night but cozy up now at 9 when kids in bed and chores done . Fab

MrsRolandRat · 07/02/2015 12:43

Currently watching breaking bad, ru Paul's drag race and house of cards.

My little girl loves watching monsters inc

gillmac · 07/02/2015 18:38

We love it! Something for the whole family. The Goodwife, lie to me, suits, white collar, we are hooked! Great value.

couldhavebeenme · 07/02/2015 18:58

Waiting for new series of house of cards. Currently enjoying The Good Wife. Like the Louis Theroux documentaries. Film wise it takes a bit of searching for decent ones but recently we have watched flight, 50/50, a long way down, fish tank, you can count on me.
