Why is Sex topic now in Active?

It never used to be there before. It doesn't really seem appropriate with some of the titles.

Agree!

BlusteryLake · 15/02/2023 19:45

I would also like to know the reasoning behind this. I think the sex board attracts dodgy men to MN. They then spill over onto other boards, derailing threads and being aggressive.

Probably some pervert has their feet under the mumsnet table.

LilyMumsnet · 15/02/2023 19:48

Hi OP

The Sex topic is now appearing in Active because we don't want to exclude parts of the site. If you have it hidden you shouldn't be seeing it so it would definitely be worth hiding the topic if you don't want to see it!

Sorry but that's a really feeble explanation as to why MN have changed their policy on this. Surely there must have been a more robust discussion than that?

BaroldFromEastenders · 15/02/2023 19:51

MN released a sex toy (for mothers and people with wombs) and made sure the sex topic was unhidden for everyone and appearing in active at launch.

nice eh?

AceofPentacles · 15/02/2023 19:55

Can you hide topics on the app?

It puts me right off my dinner

MeganTheeScallion · 15/02/2023 19:56

Yep, they're perfectly capable of keeping other boards out of Active in order to improve user experience and discourage trolling & derailing, but this is completely about clicks & money. It's a shame they think we're silly.

HermioneWeasley · 15/02/2023 20:00

It’s noticeable how active the men of MN are on the sex threads. You can have 40 pages on current affairs (so not something that’s female exclusive like breastfeeding) and zero blokes, but the sex threads appear to be about 50/50. Almost like they’re getting off on it.

NashvilleQueen · 15/02/2023 20:07

I inadvertently replied to a sex thread which was in active because I hadn't realised it had unhidden. I am astonished to find so many men on MN but only talking about sex.

Creepy AF

Anyway I think I've managed to hide again now although frankly that's much more complex a process than it needs to be.

TeaandHobnobs · 15/02/2023 20:08

Totally fed up of the sex-themed “promoted by mumsnet” posts, and now this… MNHQ I’m not impressed

Me too!

HereForTheFreeLunch · 15/02/2023 20:25

Ahh Is that what it was! I was surprised to see post after post from blokes too.

Put me right off my free lunch

beastlyslumber · 15/02/2023 20:29

Agree. I don't want to see it and I hate the fact that it draws dodgy blokes onto the site.

Getir · 15/02/2023 20:29

It's full of blokes who only post on that board. It's not difficult to work out they only use that board to wank over.

PetronellaOsgood · 15/02/2023 20:42

Agree, how do you hide the topic using a he App?

redspottedmug · 15/02/2023 20:52

It's very convoluted. - go into your settings, then more settings (which opens the web version), then more settings , scroll down forever to manage hidden topics and threads (or something). Select the topic.

Would be far easier to take it off active @
MNHQ.

My thoughts exactly. That stupid sex "toy" pushed in our faces everywhere on the site. The company behind it must have paid a massive amount of money. How cheap!

There was a time when, if a thread about pickups or sex toys or whatever turned up in Chat or AIBU, it would have been pretty much obligatory to fill it with soup recipes and discussions of animal & bird reproduction methods (drakes were always a favourite).

I wonder how long it’s going to be before MN start selling penis beakers?

Did you fall over reaching that far?

IsItBedtimeYetNope · 15/02/2023 21:21

I'm not backwards about coming forwards when it comes to sex but there's a time and a place for it and I just don't want it popping up on my phone when I'm reading MN in my lunch break or on a bus with my babies or at a restaurant when I'm waiting for food, or all those other bits of "dead time" when I browse the site. It's going to make me less likely to look at MN and more likely to browse through a news website or Facebook where I know most of my friends post stuff that's safe for work! I don't log in on my phone, I just read, as I don't know my password and typing on a phone is rubbish, so there's no way to hide it.

10/10 for potential public embarrassment.
