Why is Sex topic now in Active?

It never used to be there before. It doesn't really seem appropriate with some of the titles.

I hate it and can't work out how to hide a topic on the app

kittensinthekitchen · 15/02/2023 21:24

So are the Special Needs topics showing in Active now @LilyMumsnet ?

What about OTBT? 30 days only?

Which other topics were previously hidden?

RedDoughnut · 15/02/2023 21:51

I agree, time and a place but not in Active.

And it has more than it's fair share of grubby sounding men.

Veryniceindeed · 15/02/2023 21:52

No I don’t want it in Active either thanks.

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 15/02/2023 21:55

I'm gonna be old and grey by the time this is sorted, I've hidden the sex topic, it's still appearing in active. I haven't had a satisfactory conclusion or reply.
I now hide each thread, which is time consuming, annoying and shouldn't be necessary.

SpinningFloppa · 15/02/2023 21:56

Yes I wondered this as well! I thought I maybe just never noticed but I was sure it never use to be in active. I really don’t want to read thread titles like “fishy smell when he comes inside me” when I’m scrolling

goldenfolder · 15/02/2023 21:57

LilyMumsnet · 15/02/2023 19:48

Hi OP

The Sex topic is now appearing in Active because we don't want to exclude parts of the site. If you have it hidden you shouldn't be seeing it so it would definitely be worth hiding the topic if you don't want to see it!

@LilyMumsnet can you put the SEN boards all in active then please - that's even more excluding what you're doing with those boards.

Rainbowshit · 15/02/2023 21:58

Ah I wondered this too.

There was a very good reason it didn't appear on active conversations. What changed? 🤔

@LilyMumsnet have you removed the time restrictions on posting in the sax topic too?

Sparklingbrook · 15/02/2023 21:59

I noticed it’s now 7 days from signing up to being able to post in the Sex Topic. It was 90 days to start with.

MrsBunnyEars · 15/02/2023 22:01

I really don’t like it being in active. The tone of the specific sex threads (opposed to a thread that happens to be about sex in another topic) seems very seedy.

MiaMoor · 15/02/2023 22:03

It’s full of creepy men - is that really in the spirit of Mumsnet?

AdaBrady · 15/02/2023 22:04

Mumsnet is feeling increasingly seedy these days.

I'm not backwards about coming forwards when it comes to sex but there's a time and a place for it and I just don't want it popping up on my phone when I'm reading MN in my lunch break or on a bus with my babies or at a restaurant when I'm waiting for food

Same!

ticolac · 15/02/2023 22:24

Absolutely do not want to see this, or want my teenage son to see thread titles from this topic as he walks past. Ridiculous decision.

BaroldFromEastenders · 15/02/2023 23:25

They just wanted all you vulva owners to make sure you had the chance to purchase shreks ear for yourself. Anyway don’t hold your breath getting a decent response out of MN, people were really pissed off at the time and MNHQ couldn’t care less.

Rogue1001MNer · 15/02/2023 23:50

I've seen a few of these threads.

And I don't want the sex topics on my active either.
I don't want to hide the topic, because I might sometimes want to know or look up something, but like many of you, I don't want sex talk thrown at me.

I was also going to point out other boards which also aren't showing on active - OTBT in particular.
Which seems to give a lie to what @LilyMumsnet/@mnhq are spouting

Interestingly enough, I've accidentally clicked on a couple of sex threads in my active, not realising they were sex threads, and regular posters there hate it too

So it seems to be a lose/lose situation

PermanentTemporary · 15/02/2023 23:55

Yes I don't like it being on Active, old pervert that I am. It felt pleasantly private over there and like I wasn't a weirdo, and now there I am being a weirdo on active. There's a difference between exclusion and privacy.

Particularly as MN years ago used to be quite brash about sex but in a very particular way, and that doesn't really exist any more. The Sex board isn't the same as that but it allowed some of us to be old bags in our own way.

leithreas · 15/02/2023 23:56

I reported a thread on that board earlier about a 16 year old boy and fetishism which was deleted but not before the gross regulars there all replied earnestly seemingly not seeing an issue with it. Is this really the type of people mumsnet wants to attract? The trolls that start those types of threads and the posters who encourage it?

NashvilleQueen · 16/02/2023 06:48

In case it helps because it isn't obvious and took me ages last night ...

To hide from the mobile version of the website (not the app):

Click the top right 'person' icon

Settings

You'll see 'Account details' but above it threes a drop down saying 'more settings'. Click that.

Then 'Talk Settings'

Go right to the bottom and there's an option to 'manage hidden threads and topics'

Type in the topic you want to hide and click hide when it appears.

Getir · 16/02/2023 07:03

The regulars on there don't seem to know the difference between a perv posting or a genuine problem. It was pretty obvious to me the 16 year old boy one was not genuine. If that thread had been posted in any other area of the site it wouldn't have got any genuine replies.

thetrees · 16/02/2023 07:24

Agree, I really dislike it too

AwkwardSquad · 16/02/2023 07:28

Also really dislike it. Finding it very off putting

Thank you - topic hidden!

BentleyRhythmAce · 16/02/2023 07:31

Is it possible to hide topics in the app, if @LilyMumsnet and Co aren't willing to remove the topic from active? I only ever use the app, the only PC I use is at work and I don't want my login details on there.

The explanation for putting it in active now doesn't cut it, by the way, as some topics are still kept off. Please credit your users with some intelligence, @mnhq.
