Mumsnet Talk re-platforming - Known issues update

JustineMumsnet · 21/04/2022 14:44

Hi all,
As you probably know we re-plaftormed the site overnight on Tuesday (in order to move to a faster, more stable and secure site which would be easier to develop new features on). There are a number of issues and bugs as a result of the move that we are working through and we thought it would be a good idea to list them on a page which we can keep updated as we sort through the problems. You can find that page here.

Mumsnet is a very large, complicated and old site - we've been working on re-platforming for the best part of 3 years - so it's not a huge surprise there are some bugs but please be assured we are working our way through them will get to them all as soon as we possibly can. In the meantime I do apologise for any inconvenience and frustration - I know it's been a painful day and a half for some.

Thank you to all those who've fed back and are helping us solve the remaining issues - it's really much appreciated Flowers.

I'm on a pc, not mobile device.

Has anyone noticed that when you go back to a page that's been open in your browser a while, you get a "this page has expired" pop up, and the option to refresh. You can cancel it without refreshing the page, but then nothing works. So if I've been away from the page without bookmarking, then go back to it later, I can't bookmark it.

It's a minor thing but surprisingly annoying!

Is anyone actually reading the post linked to in the OP? The page that this thread is about?

A lot of the issues still being brought up are noted in it, with ways around a couple of them. E.g. the colour of your posts/OP posts.
www.mumsnet.com/articles/talk-updates

i've read it too. But many of the issues mentioned repeatedly are not listed in there and apparently not going to be looked at any time soon - the tiny tiny font, for example, and the huge swathes of white space at the sides, the empty lines at the top of the threads - those are big issues that cause lots of extra scrolling and make it hard to use/see.

Other things are listed as 'fixed' - like threads I'm on or I'm watching not updating properly in the app. But they aren't fixed for everyone - even after logging out and then in again, they still don't work properly. So it's important to keep mentioning some things even when they are supposedly fixed, becasue they aren't always.

And the photo issue is on there, but doesn't seem to be a priority for being fixed, but that's quite a major issue for people, so the more people that mention it, the higher priority it might be on the list.

C8H10N4O2 · 25/04/2022 08:44

@JustineMumsnet When can we expect an update on the loss of accessibility and the fixes needed to restore at least to the old level of accesibility?

Including the return of keyboard shortcuts such as cntl+enter which I'm sure you realise are key accessibility features.

I note there has been no change to this section of the open issues since the page was set up and frankly its galling to see that section describe the return of basic access features as "enhancements".

C8H10N4O2 · 25/04/2022 09:00

And for the love of Om, when will bookmarks be fixed? Again, key navigation aid for people using access software. Try paging through hundreds of posts by command to find your place (again) - I've scarcely used the site since the upgrade, its just too hard to use.

SanFranBear · 25/04/2022 09:01

I've just seen this thread so realise it's a few days old but I have to raise again the issues around MN Premium - not even flagged on your common issues page. I know there are lots of 'features' with this service but let's face it, we sign up to not be advertised too across banners, mid thread, down the side of the page - it is excruciating!

It is disappointing that for those of us who are actually paying to use this site, there doesn't appear to be any movement or update on the issue. I'm still drowning in ads which is the reason I signed up (in the first week or release, I might add) and yes, the other glitches are there too but for some Premium users to be fine and yet many others to not, surely this is something that should be straight forward enough to resolve... its not everyone so please explain how so many of us have just been dumped from this service?

Tagliatellme · 25/04/2022 09:34

There's an issue with using italics - this is what happens when I try (preview of my post). Also, after using italics, I couldn't then press return. I have to put a space in, and only then will the cursor moved down a row.

Also, went can't we click on any added photos in a preview? It's really useful to be able to check everything before you post.

Testing the italics function, what I get is this.

So it seems as if everythng is varying from one poster to another, which in itself is a very bad thing on a board like this one.

I want my watched threads back.

HawthornLantern · 25/04/2022 13:01

@JustineMumsnet I second the point made by SanFran Bear. Ironically my subscription renewed on 8th April so I almost feel I personally funded a platform that refuses to recognise my Premium subscription and is trying to charge me again to get rid of adverts.

I know you and the techs are drowning in glitches and must be feeling there is a non-stop flow of groans and complaints and I’m sorry for that.

Is there any chance of an update thread? I can’t work out - and maybe you can’t either - what has been sorted out and what are the tough nuts left to crack.

Roussette · 25/04/2022 13:04

I just want my PMs back.

I can cope with everything else.

Thirding! I’ve bought a product that is no longer fit for service. Come on Mumsnet, please sort out removing the ads for Premium users

Borgonzola · 25/04/2022 13:28

Also new to this thread, but none of the bookmarks on my watched threads have updated for the past few days. They're still showing the bookmarks I made in mid-April as the most recent.

prettybird · 25/04/2022 13:39

@C8H10N4O2 @Borgonzola

Re bookmarks: it's a workaround and a faff, but try taking off any bookmark you have, exiting the thread, going back into it, flipping it (essential if it's a long thread so that you can get to the last post Wink) and then bookmarking again.

But you need to do that every time you want a new bookmark HmmConfused But at least it means when you go back into a thread, it goes back to your most recent bookmark, and if it was the last post, it means that anything after it is "new".

NCTDN · 25/04/2022 18:20

I am so so frustrated by all of this now, so can't imagine how all of you paying for premiums must be feeling
I can't see anything different to the old version except for millions of missing features, no bookmarks, threads gone and only half the boards...
I don't even know if this thread is being read by anyone such as @JustineMumsnet

Hi @HawthornLantern so sorry you're still having these issues. I will PM you for more information now and we will sort it asap.

Hi @SanFranBear really sorry you're still seeing ads - this is proving a tricky one to sort but we're most definitely on it. I will PM you now for more info and we'll get it sorted asap.

HawthornLantern · 25/04/2022 18:34

@SueMumsnet Thanks! Just to let you know I have been clearing and deleting cookies daily, logging out and exiting the browser (Safari 15.4) every day just to see if progress has been made.

Hi @NCTDN - we are reading every post on all of these threads. All of the issues you've mentioned we're working on and hoping will be sorted this week. Really sorry for the frustration.

NCTDN · 25/04/2022 18:44

@SueMumsnet thanks. Funnily enough I couldn't read this notification , just happened to see my name in your postShock

AcrossthePond55 · 25/04/2022 20:47

Has the ability to make a multipage thread all one page function been removed? I can't find it anywhere. I can't even remember what it was called: "see all messages" "see 1000 messages" something like that.

Please bring it back if it's been removed, it was really useful.

Roussette · 25/04/2022 20:58

@AcrossthePond55
Hi there... I've just done this in Settings, then Talk Settings, second option down is 'All'

And it works!

Why not roll back to the previous version of talk until you sort out all the known issues. You are already going to start losing Mnetters who just can't be bothered after 3 days of hell on this new version

“Hell”?! That’s a bit dramatic isn’t it. I really don’t think they’re going to lose as many users as people think. It’s still a (mostly) free website at the end of the day!

Depends. It seems worse for some people than others. I have seen some people bugger off. I am spending less time on here as it is so faffy. CBA with the slowness and the glitches.

I'm not here as much either as the app doesn't work at all for me, despite uninstalling, reinstalling etc. Can't post anything, and I know there's several other users who can't either. I'm not dragging my laptop out every time I want to log on. I've even resorted to checking out Netmums today....

I'm getting pissed off today with not being able to see the images that people are posting. They're tiny, can't be enlarged without going fuzzy.

I get 'Oops' screens too and have lost posts - still happening this evening. It's all a bit tedious tbh.

spindle it's annoying isn't it? I can read posts fine but can't contribute. I only ever use the app normally.

@Pyri maybe it's not too bad for you, but this is the first time I've come back on since I posted.... and I'm normally on here loads, so maybe there will be less traffic.

I agree - I can't understand why they didn't wait until the new version was perfect before launching - there was nothing wrong with the old version in my opinion.

Took about 1 and a half minutes to load this thread. (Just Mumsnet other windows on my phone are fine-ish) (Facebook took 7 seconds)

Bookmarks are still buggered and not responding to being clicked.

Threads are freezing as try to scroll past adverts.

As one scrolls through a thread you get large areas of white as posts aren't loading

Photos are still appearing as faint white or grey hollow rectangles.

Threads keep expiring and need to be refreshed

It is not a pleasant experience using Mumsnet at the moment.

BertieBotts · 25/04/2022 21:10

Helloo! I'm back!

I have just discovered a really nice feature - you can make numbered lists! It does it all automatically and everything. Really like that. However, when I was in the process of writing it I suddenly got a big black error box - no idea what happened to cause that.

BertieBotts · 25/04/2022 21:12

I notice this is in the list and you ask for browser - I'm on a Windows 10 desktop and running Chrome Version 100.0.4896.127

BertieBotts · 25/04/2022 21:16

And just got another black box (this time with MN logo - the previous one was Server Error 500 or something like that) while sending last message here.
