Mumsnet Talk re-platforming - Known issues update

JustineMumsnet · 21/04/2022 14:44

Hi all,
As you probably know we re-plaftormed the site overnight on Tuesday (in order to move to a faster, more stable and secure site which would be easier to develop new features on). There are a number of issues and bugs as a result of the move that we are working through and we thought it would be a good idea to list them on a page which we can keep updated as we sort through the problems. You can find that page here.

Mumsnet is a very large, complicated and old site - we've been working on re-platforming for the best part of 3 years - so it's not a huge surprise there are some bugs but please be assured we are working our way through them will get to them all as soon as we possibly can. In the meantime I do apologise for any inconvenience and frustration - I know it's been a painful day and a half for some.

Thank you to all those who've fed back and are helping us solve the remaining issues - it's really much appreciated Flowers.

Ah that would make sense thank you.

The problem is that MN should be answering their users honestly and they should be looking into these things instead of repeating that it shouldn't be happening.

The responses so far to anyone I've seen ask (repeatedly) about these issues is that it shouldn't happen and anyone affected should contact them privately. Rinse and repeat.

It hasn't happened to me that I know of so a FOI might not be useful to me. I just want reassurance from MN.
I've lost faith that my data is being used appropriately or is safe in MNs hands. Every time I've asked for reassurance I've been fobbed off and gaslit. It's upsetting, infuriating and makes MNHQ look very much like they are hiding something and I've never thought that about MN before!

whatfuckinghobbyisit · 16/07/2022 21:26

The automatic numbering thing can fuck right off, too.

DragonwithoutaDungeon · 16/07/2022 21:31

I also think that MNHQ should be transparent about these issues for their users so a FOI request might be useful for the individual but as a whole I think it would be nice if MN addressed the data breach issues directly and properly instead of brushing people off all the time till they get fed up and go away or get fed up and be a bit rude like I was.

DragonwithoutaDungeon · 16/07/2022 21:47

Actually @YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet I've had a think and I do owe you an apology for being rude to you, I'm sure it's not your choice to swerve these questions from users, I'd bet money that you've been told to do it.

I'm sorry for being rude Flowers

@whatfuckinghobbyisit my nesting is fixed, as in it doesn't nest anymore, you just get a quote and an option to expand . Will try and find an example, I like it muchly

I have that too - thankfully. Hated that nesting with a passion.

It would be easier to find previous posts if you could flip a thread between showing 25 posts and 1000 like you used to be able to do. I really miss that. Sad

(Yes, I know I could set it to 1000 in my settings, but for most threads I don't want that!)

I really miss this too but was told upthread it's not coming back. So annoying.

EspeciallyDeIighted · 17/07/2022 06:03

I am pleased about the change to nested quotes though.

I agree with @Ducksurprise about the appearance of TIO being far less user friendly than it used to be and with @whatfuckinghobbyisit about the automatic numbering being a PITA.

I would really like the MN emoticons back to being a single touch on the bottom of the mobile screen I hardly use them now as it's such a faff.

Yesssss!!!!! I now have an option to 'hide' the nesting. Thank God for that, and thank you for alerting me.

Yes, this is great. Thank you, MNHQ.

Thirded. I find some of the issues pretty frustrating but I think people forget this is a free website and they have a choice not to use it

I can't do 'advanced search' at all. There's simply no option. So I can't search for posters by username.

The bloody nesting thing. Please have an option to switch it off. I lose interest in threads which have endless repetitions of what other people have said, along with stupid lines. I hate Reddit for this reason. MN is now just like Reddit.

I keep getting a message asking me if I'm sure I want to authorise downloads from MN. I haven't requested any, so I wish this message would fuck off.

12 month old iMac, using Safari. I don't have any devices.

You don't have "filters" in the search section?

That's where you search by username

Advanced search: If you're looking for a particular poster put @ and their username in the search box. Filters come up on the left hand side

SirChenjins · 18/07/2022 17:55

Yes, you can filter by username but you can’t apply a secondary filter such as date - I’ve just tried it using my own username on my iPhone. Also - you can’t search by a keyword which is what I used to use it for. Boring stuff like pasta recipe chorizo, that kind of thing.

I’ve volunteered to test the advanced search function, just waiting for MNHQ to get in touch with the test version.

But it doesn't take you directly to their post (I've just tried to search one of mine).
You have to scroll through the entire thread, kind of tedious if it's a long one.
Advanced Search used to take you straight there, now it's the opening post only.

Johnnysgirl · 18/07/2022 19:53

The additional filter "by username" throws up all threads started by that user, not threads they've just posted on Confused.
What's the point of that?

@YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet

Please see below photos, photo 1 is what all my pages used to look like and photo 2 is what I'm watching and I'm on now look like.

I'm on used to look like photo one and have four replies each with a > which you could click on to go to the reply.

Is there any reason for this change, it has made I'm on, probably the link I use most completely unusable.

If active changes to this format it will make MN unusable on my Android phone. Is this what everyone has been complaining about?

Hello!

We increased text size because there were a number of complaints about accessibility on this section due to small fonts. We are showing two newest post previews instead of three to reduce the amount of extra scrolling now that the text is larger.

The layout hasn't actually changed much apart from the size of the text and the alternate blue highlight has been removed, it only appears now if you pin threads so that there is more definition between the pinned threads and the rest of the list.

Can you talk us through how it's unusable?

EspeciallyDeIighted · 21/07/2022 20:55

Sorry, another one. TIO has gone like this on the first thread on the screen in the last couple of days (mobile version, safari, IOS 15.5)

EspeciallyDeIighted · 21/07/2022 21:08

Actually it seems to be specific to that thread as now this one is top of TIO it's fine and the jumbled lines have moved down with the other thread

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 22/07/2022 14:22

@EspeciallyDeIighted oh that's annoying - and hard on the eyes. It's possible this is an ad issue. Can you let us know if it's still happening when you refresh the page?

QuattroFromagio · 22/07/2022 16:38

that's happened for ages, and been reported lots of times - it happens on when there are threads with lists. When you go to TIO, they get all jumbled up.

Slowgrowingelm · 22/07/2022 16:43

I’ve started page-freezing again. Just posted this on another thread but realised I should do it here. Page goes white as au scroll down (always past an ad, as far a i can tell). If I wait long enough some or all of the rest of the page becomes available but not all the time.

Everything is very, very slow, makes reading almost impossible.

iphone, web page (safari I guess), not the app. I’m up to date on iOS etc.

Found this very difficult to type as very slow

Hello!

Is it just this thread that this has happened on - or a range of threads? Thanks so much for the screenshots.

ShirleyPhallus · 22/07/2022 18:01

I’ve just seen deleted threads restored on TIO!

Thank you MNHQ!!!

Orcadianrythyms · 23/07/2022 04:44

I've also got the white page after a few posts!!! So fed up of this site now - why did you change things? It's so irritating to start reading a thread and once it gets to the first advert it goes white. You must be losing so many folk.
