Mumsnet Talk re-platforming - Known issues update

JustineMumsnet · 21/04/2022 14:44

Hi all,
As you probably know we re-plaftormed the site overnight on Tuesday (in order to move to a faster, more stable and secure site which would be easier to develop new features on). There are a number of issues and bugs as a result of the move that we are working through and we thought it would be a good idea to list them on a page which we can keep updated as we sort through the problems. You can find that page here.

Mumsnet is a very large, complicated and old site - we've been working on re-platforming for the best part of 3 years - so it's not a huge surprise there are some bugs but please be assured we are working our way through them will get to them all as soon as we possibly can. In the meantime I do apologise for any inconvenience and frustration - I know it's been a painful day and a half for some.

Thank you to all those who've fed back and are helping us solve the remaining issues - it's really much appreciated Flowers.

Hi

i am still ( have been saying since the start) pages crashing, on long threads if going up/down the page the page goes white and the posts disappear, this site constantly reloads etc @HebeMumsnet @LilyMumsnet

musicalfrog · 13/07/2022 13:59

New (ish) problem here, only been for a few weeks. On the mobile site I can't access most boards and I can't flip between pages on a long thread.

I've had to log on to the laptop just to access Site Stuff and report this!

Seems the problem comes when the screen goes purple. Then I know I'm on an unusable part of the site.

Is anyone else getting this, I honestly don't have time to read 700+ posts to find out 😭

I miss MN!

Hi!

What device and browser are you using? We really want to get this sorted for you. Have you tried clearing your cache? If it persists, could you email us some screenshots/a screen recording so we can try and replicate?

I use MN on my PC. I always have a few tabs open with sites I browse around.
Since the changes, when I go back to the MN tab everything freezes and it takes a while to be able to go back to another tab. Sometimes the MN page is white and I have to close it and reload.
Is it a script you're running or something? Never was an issue before

I'm having similar issues, but only with MN, with pages freezing, getting the 'wait' or 'exit' dialogue box, or 'not enough memory to open this page' (until I refresh the page, and then it opens).

All those things are a pain, and never happened with the old platform. I'm still one of those people who's failing to see the 'improvements' on the new platform, because the things I use MN for (and the devices I use for it) have all become worse to use, or cumbersome compared to the old way. (Especially on mobile devices like my android tablet, when I used to use 'desktop mode' via chrome and what I saw mimicked my desktop tabs exactly. But now that's gone, and the version I've been forced into accepting via chrome on my tablet is just plain AWFUL)

Really hoping MNHQ can sort out all of these things quickly, because it's really putting me off using MN as much, especially when I only have access to my tablet, and not my laptop. (And don't even get me started on the app - it's just unusable on an android device)

Hi @DragonwithoutaDungeon - no, I'm definitely not trying to be amusing & I'm sorry that you thought I was.

We won't know why someone is receiving a mail unless we know what they're seeing and where it's being sent to. We're happy to discuss this with anyone who thinks this is happening to them as right now, we can't say why it is with any certainty without more info from individual MNers. You're right - it isn't supposed to happen - but again - we really need people get in touch with us. Obviously, we want to sort this out and clear up confusion.

Wrt the data breach - we had a temporary glitch with 'Report this post' for a short time, which meant the email of the person reported was included in the report and in a few cases in responses to those reports. We informed our Data Protection Officer and reported ourselves to the ICO.

We emailed the (around 20) affected users overnight offering to delete their posts, a retrospective name change or to change their email address.

The problem was caused by human error our end - our proper processes weren't followed - this is explained in greater detail by Justine on this thread.

You are talking about having reported yourself to the ICO for the data breach where you sent out other people’s email addresses when communicating with users about reports on posts. THAT’S NOT WHAT YOU’RE BEING ASKED ABOUT.

You are being asked here if you have reported yourself for keeping data that you are supposed to have deleted - i.e. the old email addresses that you claim you delete as part of your process but have discovered that you must have still kept somehow since you’ve been sending emails to them.

I don’t know if that’s an ICO worthy event or not. But it’s certainly an issue that is helping to lower trust in MN.

That doesn't sound like a reportable data breach to me.

A personal data breach is "a breach of security leading to the accidental or unlawful destruction, loss, alteration, unauthorised disclosure of, or access to, personal data". It isn't clear that this qualifies as a personal data breach. Even if it does, it is only reportable if there is likely to be a risk to people's rights and freedoms. Unless emails to people's old email addresses contain personal information there is unlikely to be any risk.

NumberTheory · 14/07/2022 23:49

@prh47bridge
That was my initial thought.

To be honest I’m less concerned with them reporting themselves and more concerned at the way they ignore the question, deflecting to other things, sweeping it under the carpet as though it’s not a big concern to them and should be of no concern to us.

Meanwhile I’m left wondering how, if their data practices are so shoddy this has slipped through their radar, what else has? And what are they doing to get things ship shape? We get promises that they’re concerned and taking it seriously but responses suggest they don’t even know what the concern is. They’ve been on the back foot for years on data practices. A new back end was an opportunity to get things sorted out, but they don’t seem to have taken the time to understand the state of their data or to make things more secure.

Now I’ll stop ranting.

@LilyMumsnet

Android on a Samsung Galaxy A50.

I've logged in but every time I go to TIO it tells me I need to log in.

I see a red notification which I click and it takes me to the purple screen of doom which is blank.

Am I the only one?

I'm at a loss :(

musicalfrog · 15/07/2022 16:41

@LilyMumsnet sorry it's an A52 not A50.

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 15/07/2022 16:50

@musicalfrog we're going to drop you an email now so this doesn't get lost.

DragonwithoutaDungeon · 15/07/2022 18:04

@YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet with yet another swerve of some valid concerns again Hmm I've given up asking, so well done! Still think its pretty dodgy behaviour though, and I don't think you're giving your users the full story.

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 16/07/2022 11:12

@DragonwithoutaDungeon I'm not swerving anything. This is a very long thread though and so if we've missed a specific issue, we'd like to try again.

DragonwithoutaDungeon · 16/07/2022 19:28

Well feel free to re-read my responses here in the thread if you are so keen to answer me and others properly.

MN mods are unfailingly polite, and when I read posts like yours I honestly think they deserve medals. I couldn't do it.

SirChenjins · 16/07/2022 19:53

Agree @saraclara

If MN has got any sense they’ll stick their collective middle fingers up at your snark@DragonwithoutaDungeon and ignore your post.

Ducksurprise · 16/07/2022 20:01

Agree and if @DragonwithoutaDungeon doesn't like it flouncers corner is that away ---->

Thirded. I find some of the issues pretty frustrating but I think people forget this is a free website and they have a choice not to use it

Ducksurprise · 16/07/2022 20:05

@YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet

Please see below photos, photo 1 is what all my pages used to look like and photo 2 is what I'm watching and I'm on now look like.

I'm on used to look like photo one and have four replies each with a > which you could click on to go to the reply.

Is there any reason for this change, it has made I'm on, probably the link I use most completely unusable.

If active changes to this format it will make MN unusable on my Android phone. Is this what everyone has been complaining about?

It would be easier to find previous posts if you could flip a thread between showing 25 posts and 1000 like you used to be able to do. I really miss that. Sad

(Yes, I know I could set it to 1000 in my settings, but for most threads I don't want that!)

DragonwithoutaDungeon · 16/07/2022 21:03

I've tried being polite. I haven't sworn at anyone but I am fed up of being given a roundabout the houses answer and basically gaslit.

I have a lot of respect for people in customer facing jobs, I've worked in similar for most of my life.

However the MN team of mods seem dead set against answering polite queries about the data breaches and their holding of personal information and data that they shouldn't have and say they don't have when they have been told time and again that in fact they are still retaining said info and using it.

Sorry my slightly rude post offended anyone but like I said I'm fed up with MN now. They are being deliberately obtuse and it's not just me they are doing it to.

I'm not going to repeat myself again because it appears pointless to do so. They also have all the information available to them already. If they have any interest in dealing fairly with their users they could access it and give proper full responses rather than ignoring users valid concerns and asking them to continually repeat themselves.

As we all know these techniques are effective in shutting people down. I find it a bit triggering tbh so had tried to stay away. Clearly I failed but I'm not sorry for being a bit rude about it tbh.

FOR Request?

DragonwithoutaDungeon · 16/07/2022 21:09

@ThePumpkinPatch sorry if I'm being a bit thick, I'm not sure what a for request is?

Meant to be FOI I assume

whatfuckinghobbyisit · 16/07/2022 21:24

I can't do 'advanced search' at all. There's simply no option. So I can't search for posters by username.

The bloody nesting thing. Please have an option to switch it off. I lose interest in threads which have endless repetitions of what other people have said, along with stupid lines. I hate Reddit for this reason. MN is now just like Reddit.

I keep getting a message asking me if I'm sure I want to authorise downloads from MN. I haven't requested any, so I wish this message would fuck off.
