Mumsnet Talk re-platforming - Known issues update

Hi all,
As you probably know we re-plaftormed the site overnight on Tuesday (in order to move to a faster, more stable and secure site which would be easier to develop new features on). There are a number of issues and bugs as a result of the move that we are working through and we thought it would be a good idea to list them on a page which we can keep updated as we sort through the problems. You can find that page here.

Mumsnet is a very large, complicated and old site - we've been working on re-platforming for the best part of 3 years - so it's not a huge surprise there are some bugs but please be assured we are working our way through them will get to them all as soon as we possibly can. In the meantime I do apologise for any inconvenience and frustration - I know it's been a painful day and a half for some.

Thank you to all those who've fed back and are helping us solve the remaining issues - it's really much appreciated Flowers.

Did you mean that to be amusing, coz you've just pretty much rinse repeated what was said above Hmm

It is happenening... but why?!

Can someone answer my questions please rather than repeating this silly stock response?

Why is that happening?
Isn't that supposed to be impossible?
What are MNHQ doing about this (holding info users have requested you remove) - do you need to report yourself again?

How did the recent data breach occur? I haven't seen a satisfactory explanation yet but I may have missed it. I know roughly how it occurred but according to the PP's who know about this stuff, it shouldn't have happened and it's worrying that it did.

What are you doing to properly protect your users and their information please MN? For all I know you've got another dodgy Intern, collecting info about folk - we know it's happened before... how about some reassurance?

Hi @DragonwithoutaDungeon - no, I'm definitely not trying to be amusing & I'm sorry that you thought I was.

We won't know why someone is receiving a mail unless we know what they're seeing and where it's being sent to. We're happy to discuss this with anyone who thinks this is happening to them as right now, we can't say why it is with any certainty without more info from individual MNers. You're right - it isn't supposed to happen - but again - we really need people get in touch with us. Obviously, we want to sort this out and clear up confusion.

Wrt the data breach - we had a temporary glitch with 'Report this post' for a short time, which meant the email of the person reported was included in the report and in a few cases in responses to those reports. We informed our Data Protection Officer and reported ourselves to the ICO.

We emailed the (around 20) affected users overnight offering to delete their posts, a retrospective name change or to change their email address.

The problem was caused by human error our end - our proper processes weren't followed - this is explained in greater detail by Justine on this thread.

Am I going mad, or has the font used on the site just changed? I returned to a thread after a few minutes on another web page, and the look of the text is completely different - I’m squinting and getting a very bad headache! I’ve checked other boards/threads and it all seems to be changed to a different font. Maybe I just need sleep or to get off Mumsnet…

Hey @LunaLights would you mind sharing a screenshot? The font looks the same to me.

This is a very long thread now so this may have been mentioned, but when I added a picture on the old system (on my Android laptop, Chrome browser) I could drag and drop into the Add your message here box. Now I can't.

Hey @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g are you able to add the image by clicking the plus sign underneath the text box?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 02/07/2022 16:41

@YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet Yes, but not by dragging and dropping. If I do that the image opens as a tab. I have to use the dialogue box to get the image from my files, which is just a slightly longer-winded way of doing it.

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 02/07/2022 17:41

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g the same thing is happening when I try it too - sorry, it looks like the drag and drop doesn't work now. Hope it's not too much of a pain.

@KatyMumsnet When you say notifications aren't working what exactly isn't working for you? We know that some notifications aren't taking users to the right place on the thread and we're waiting on a fix to be released for that. If it's something else then let us know.

For instance, this thread. Notifications tell me there are 51 new messages on this (8-page) thread. I click the notification. It takes me to post 1, page 1. Every time. I then have to go to page 8 and count 51 messages backwards to find where I was.

AnneKipankitoo · 07/07/2022 09:15

I have been having bother posting recently.
I get a message saying you have to write a message when I have .
This morning I got a message on trying to send a post on a word association game( songs) that I have posted too many recently. I posted once this morning on a different word game.
I had not posted since yesterday evening ( early ) .
This new set up is not working well.

This is a known issue and we will be releasing a fix for it as soon as possible!

@AnneKipankitoo please could you let us know what device and browser you're using, and if you receive any error messages, can we have a screenshot? We'd really like to get this sorted for you.

AnneKipankitoo · 07/07/2022 13:19

I do not have any screenshots.
I am on Apple iPhone 13 , Safari.

Next time it happens, can you get us one so that we can try and find out what's going on here? Flowers

Memyselfandfood · 07/07/2022 22:44

Yet again threads im on have disappeared ( guessing deleted) but no deletion message for me!
pages repeatedly crashing still, posts disappearing, pages anything likely to be fixed? @LilyMumsnet

Emilycanfly · 07/07/2022 22:56

Every time I load a new page I have to accept cookies - this includes moving to subsequent pages of a thread.
also, if I use the back button on my browser I get an error message - I need to refresh the page to get rid of it and then accept cookies again.
I’m on an iPad and use safari. Totally irritating to use.

Emilycanfly · 07/07/2022 22:57

this is the error message

Furries · 08/07/2022 01:13

The whole “notifications/back to page one” issue is a joke.

I’ve lost track of time, but it’s got to be getting on for 3 months since the new release. Why on earth is it taking so long to resolve?

As an addition, as a pp said upthread, the search function is rubbish.

And another glitch, that has been mentioned before, but no answer given. PLEASE reinstate the “go to” function re pages. It’s infuriating when your notifications take you to page 1. If you have a vague idea in your head that the last post you read was anywhere after page 6 or before page 33 then you’re screwed! Clicking through one by one is not a good use oftime.

bestbefore · 08/07/2022 06:49

Stickies: I don't have any stickied threads on desktop and non on the app either...

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 08/07/2022 17:41

@Memyselfandfood the issue with deleted threads not showing (so you can't see the deletion message) is in the process of being fixed. We know it's frustrating but we're always happy to give you more info about a deleted thread if you ask us.

@Emilycanfly that's annoying. You shouldn't be asked for cookie consent on every page. We’ve changed our Consent Management Platform to one which allows you to “reject all” cookies rather than having to go through them one by one. For a small number of users this has resulted in them being asked to consent on every page they visit. If this is happening to you please follow the instructions below the consent pop up should stop appearing once you've reselected your preferences.

iPhone & iPad
Navigate to your settings
Click on ‘Safari’
Scroll to the bottom and choose ‘Advanced’
Click on ‘Website Data’
Type ‘Mumsnet' into the search box
Swipe left on ‘Mumsnet’ and choose ‘Delete’

@bestbefore do you have an ad blocker by any chance or have you rejected cookies? That will stop those threads showing for you. We do have an issue with them at the moment where they aren't appearing correctly on tablets but we are working on a fix for that.

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 08/07/2022 17:50

@Furries I'm going to find out where this is at and get back to you asap.

bestbefore · 08/07/2022 17:57

@YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet I don't have ad blocker and I don't think I rejected cookies!

@YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet thank you! All sorted x

prh47bridge · 09/07/2022 21:19

The adverts are now working correctly for me, and I can now go to the Captain Tom Foundation thread without getting an error 500. However, a few new points having spent a week away from home:

  • Emails notifying PMs contain two links - one to view the message and one to view my inbox. There was a time when these both worked as described, but then there was a change and the "view the message" link just took you to your inbox. That is still the case on the new platform. Either "view the message" should work or it should be removed.
  • Having been notified of a PM, tapping on either link on my mobile phone brings up the Mumsnet app. Since the app doesn't handle PMs, it just sits there spinning at me.
  • If I use the browser on my phone to go to the mobile website and try to access PMs in that way, it again sends me to the app.
  • If I switch the browser to desktop mode, I can get at my PMs, but, of course, the font is very small as the PM page is not designed to work on mobile devices.
prh47bridge · 09/07/2022 21:22

Another point I meant to add - the mobile app isn't keen on long threads. If I open this thread, there is a lot of scrolling to get to the bottom (which is not a very good user experience). Before I actually arrive at the end of the thread, the app takes me out of the thread and back to the previous screen. Possibly running out of memory and not handling the situation very well?

HebeMumsnet · 11/07/2022 12:29

@Furries Just a quick update on the mention notifications and watch notifications. We are making some infrastructure changes in the next couple of weeks that should mean mention notifications start taking you straight to the mention and watch notifications should take you to the last reply that was there when you last opened the thread.

If all goes as we are hoping that should fix this problem. Do let us know if that's no better for you in two weeks or thereabouts.

HebeMumsnet · 11/07/2022 12:34

Morning, prh47bridge. Thanks for flagging this. It's been an issue across the platforms to be honest and we are aware of it. We think we may have a fix but it's taking a little while to sort - and yes, it does look like a memory issue.

In the meantime, until it's fixed, you could try setting your threads to 25 posts per page? Or 50 per page might do it. We know it's not ideal but it is making life less frustrating as a workaround for lots of users until the issue is fixed.

HebeMumsnet · 11/07/2022 12:42

@bestbefore Thanks for letting us know about the Stickies. We'll look into that now.
