Mumsnet Talk re-platforming - Known issues update

JustineMumsnet · 21/04/2022 14:44

Hi all,
As you probably know we re-plaftormed the site overnight on Tuesday (in order to move to a faster, more stable and secure site which would be easier to develop new features on). There are a number of issues and bugs as a result of the move that we are working through and we thought it would be a good idea to list them on a page which we can keep updated as we sort through the problems. You can find that page here.

Mumsnet is a very large, complicated and old site - we've been working on re-platforming for the best part of 3 years - so it's not a huge surprise there are some bugs but please be assured we are working our way through them will get to them all as soon as we possibly can. In the meantime I do apologise for any inconvenience and frustration - I know it's been a painful day and a half for some.

Thank you to all those who've fed back and are helping us solve the remaining issues - it's really much appreciated Flowers.

Posted this on the wrong thread Blush

Bookmarks are still not consistently "holding". I just bookmarked the thread in this photo - time stamped at 15.55.

I go back in at 16.14 and it has reverted to a very old bookmark. I'd suspected that this was happening as I was thinking I was losing my mind and not actually bookmarking when I thought I had Confused

I'd stopped doing my "workaround" (of taking off the bookmark, exiting the thread, going back in, flipping it and then bookmarking it again) as bookmarking seemed to be working properly again on other threads - but it would seem to be an intermittent "fix" Hmm

Literally 2 minutes into posting a message highlighting the awful differences between my laptop and my android tablet, both using Chrome browser, which used to look at act identically before the 're-launch', and I get the black screen and my entire post has gone 'poof'.

This is my 2nd attempt, but it's not saying half the things I said in the first version because I'm afaid if I take too long again, this one will go 'poof' too.

Using laptop, Chrome browser for this post, by the way. Not the app, not a mobile device.

@MNHQ please can you sort this out? Especially the discrepency between the visuals across Chrome browser when using a laptop and an android tablet when they used to be exactly the same, as long as I selected 'desktop view' on my tablet.

TheHighStreetsAreDying · 28/04/2022 18:26

Also, why can't we see when the last post was made on any particular thread? How are we to know whether to check a thread or not, compared to when the last time was we did? (I don't use bookmarks or anything like that - I liked it the way it was in the old version).

Or whether (or not) @MNHQ have posted on a thread? The latter thing is actually pretty important right now, when so many people are having issues, and most feel completely ignored 😟

Yes I've no idea what time this was posted at.

Still getting the black box over text.
Still clicking on bookmarks and getting no response for longer than it takes to read what's visible on the page.

Still clicking on pictures and not getting a response until I have given up and read several more posts. The. The bloody thing takes ages to load and won't go away when you click.

BlackeyedSusan · 29/04/2022 07:57

It takes ages for the post button to respond and actually post.

It is not as quick as the old site.

BlackeyedSusan · 29/04/2022 08:02

Annoyingly if you are reading a thread and can't get the bookmark to work...

When you come back after, you know parenting kids..you can no longer access bookmarks as you need to refresh then it takes you back to wherever you last managed to get bookmarks to walk. It is very annoying. Makes mn difficult to use

Yep, there are multiple repeated posts appearing, and I can see why. Several times I've thought that my post hasn't sent, so have been about to press the post button again.

BertieBotts · 29/04/2022 11:02

The reason behind my multiple posts the other day is it kept timing out to a black screen and looked like it hadn't worked, so I sent again 3-4 times and then gave up. When I came back later I'd posted 4 times.

Iwasfeelingepic · 29/04/2022 11:10

My bookmarks were working for awhile, but now when I click on a thread, it takes me to a previous bookmark and then I have to scroll to the end of the page & work my way back. Very frustrating.

Nanny0gg · 29/04/2022 13:02

And now the formatting has gone to pot and everything is italic

NCTDN · 29/04/2022 15:29

Bookmarks are working at the moment on the app for me Wink

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 29/04/2022 17:18

Very glad my "I'm watching" treads have gone up for 13 to 36. Thank you.

"from" not "for"!

TheChurchOfEli · 29/04/2022 20:58

Safari on iPhone.

When reading a thread and click back on the browser it takes me to the top of the thread, not back a page. Very frustrating as thats what the back button is for. Especially as the site is painfully slow now, I’m spending ages waiting for it to go back to active thread but it just takes me to the op

AHobbyaweek · 29/04/2022 22:43

Where has bookmark gone for filtered posts. I normally filter for OP and bookmark the latest but it has gone on the iOS app

EasterDecorations · 30/04/2022 06:22

I thought being able to stack quotes would be an improvement but it's not, some threads are so full of quoted and requoted posts that you have to scroll through several screens worth of post on a phone to get to the added bit, makes it almost impossible to follow. It might work on a desktop or tablet but nearly all my MN time is on my phone (mobile version not app). Please rethink this.

BertieBotts · 30/04/2022 06:58

A really easy solution would be to be able to collapse quotes automatically and only open them if you're really flummoxed as to the context of the reply. Then people who actually like them Confused can keep using them and they won't annoy the crap out of the rest of us.

NecessaryScene · 30/04/2022 09:19

Been going through some old "collection of resources" type threads such as this one, and the new behaviour on the website of handling YouTube links is unhelpful.

It looks like any link to YouTube puts an embedded video in in place of whatever text was in the link.

So if you have a list of videos like

[[http://youtube.com/asdasd Video Title 1]]
[[http://youtube.com/fghgfhh Video Title 2]]

You don't actually see the titles/descriptions any more. (You might get to see a truncated part of the YouTube title in the embed, but that may not be the description that was desired).

Can you get it to put in the link text, if any, before the embedded video?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 30/04/2022 12:38

I continue to be unable to read the images people post of screenshots, or of much else come to that.

An example would be on page 7 of www.mumsnet.com/talk/_chat/4539506-ukraine-invasion-part-23?page=7&reply=116942759 at 29/04/2022 19:14, a post by MMBaranova. It is not possible to read within the thread, being 5cm wide on my screen. When I click on it to get an enlarged image, it is all of 10cm, and the writing is still very difficult to make out.

This has not been a problem before the board was "improved".

Please can you make the images better, or provide some way to make them full-screen so there is some point in having them at all?

And thank you, while I am here, for the reply-box size increasing downwards as my posts get longer. I do appreciate that.

(I plan to duplicate this post to the other thread that I am on about the changes, in the hope that it may catch attention there if it doesn't here.)

BertieBotts · 30/04/2022 22:02

I have noticed another weird issue. On certain threads, on the desktop (Windows 10 / Chrome version whatever the latest is) I have no scroll bar. I can scroll up and down using my mouse wheel, but I can't grab the bar with my mouse and move it up and down. I do this a lot because my mouse wheel is a bit broken. I can't see a pattern as to when it happens because the scroll bar is there on most threads.

I'm glad it's not just me! I reported this yesterday, and said I'd send the URL when it next happened, but today I've mostly been on my phone.
Maybe you could share the URL on here if you find a page that does it before I do! I'm also on Chrome

BertieBotts · 30/04/2022 22:29

Well, it was happening on this thread, but now I've gone back to grab the URL, it's not any more. But I have noticed it on another thread too, I just can't remember what thread it was the first time I noticed it.

0blio · 01/05/2022 11:25

Brave on android

Very much slower. I can no longer be bothered trying to read long threads (over a couple of hundred posts) as they are SO slow to load.

Posted images sometimes just won't open but mess up the thread, making the whole thing tiny and over to one side. If they do open they're very small and text is blurry.

SpindleInTheWind · 01/05/2022 12:45

Just came on the thread to say how slow MN is today. Sometimes it appears frozen in time and space.

(Laptop, Windows 10, chrome.)
