New Talk launching tonight - please read!

Hello everyone.

After a bump in the road on last week’s attempt (sorry about that) we’re re-platforming Mumsnet Talk tonight. Because of this, the site will be down from midnight tonight (19/4) until 5am on Wednesday (20/4) morning.

For those of us resistant to change - don’t panic! The functionality of the site won’t change very much for now apart from some improvements to existing features like search and private messages. Our plan is to add more features/make updates once we are settled into the new platform.

However, there are a few things that you should be aware of before logging in tomorrow:

The first time you log on to Mumsnet post-replatforming you will need to remember your password. If you can’t (and let’s face it, few of us can) then you’ll need to reset your password. Sorry if that’s a pain - but it is the only secure way to do this.

You may need to update your browser. If you still view Mumsnet on an older browser you may experience compatibility problems with images, videos and links not working properly and you might not be able to post on a thread or fill in a form. To ensure you avoid these kinds of issues, we suggest you update your browser. Please click here for more information about re-platforming and how to update your browser.

And, not forgetting a massive thank you and unMumsnetty hugs to everyone who helped us test the new platform. You’re all stars. Star

If you’ve got any questions or comments, please add them to this thread.

Thank you.

MajorCarolDanvers · 20/04/2022 20:36

Its great.

And its not been a disaster like another parenting site had a year or so ago.

Well done.

Are we on the same site or is this sarcasm...

MissMarpleRocks · 20/04/2022 20:43

Sad to say this but the font has given me a headache & it’s hurting my eyes.

Ill come back in a week or so when hopefully it’s all been ironed out as it’s just horrid.

When I click on my watched threads, I either get sent to the beginning of the thread or get a big black box and have to go back on my browser when on my laptop

thisisawfulsimplyawful · 20/04/2022 20:52

I have had to set up a completely new account to get on.

Gladioli23 · 20/04/2022 20:52

My two particular problems are the tiny tiny photos and the fact that threads I'm watching now gives me no clue as to how many posts there have been since I watched it??

MrsDanversBroom · 20/04/2022 20:52

It is truly dreadful

If you click on the smiley face under the text box on the right hand side, then click on the big M, the MN emojis will appear. They couldn’t have hidden them better if they’d tried really.

Thanks, yes, I read the other comments about it. I was meaning the special emojis. Like the Easter, Christmas ones etc.

I was going to say shill, but it is likely that some people like it.

But I hope MN are looking at what issues are being raised, and what sorts of users are raising them.

I remember some changes a while ago, when the techie analysts had told MNHQ that only a minority of users used a particular feature, and so rolled out a change. which was wildly unpopular and idc reversed. Because that hadn't allowed for that 'minority' being the most prolific users (and therefore most valuable content producers).

Are those who welcome it the more prolific users?

I'm not immediately persuaded - Active is pretty slow tonight. Fewer threads and fewer posts.

Or are people voting with their feet and spending less time here?

The site is pretty bad on desktop now (desktop on iPad being my preferred set up). There is no reason whatsoever to dumb down a desktop site to make it look like mobile one. Its just wide blank spaces and less functionality now. And it didn't have to be like that

EarringsandLipstick · 20/04/2022 21:01

Active is pretty slow tonight. Fewer threads and fewer posts.

'Active' is full of threads from bygone times. Best yet was the one from 2009 asking if OP should let her 4 year old go to the shop unaccompanied. Lots of posters remarking excitedly about it, combined with several pointing out said child was now 17, and probably old enough to go alone 😂

The actual active threads can only be accessed from individual topics.

Imagine that MN still believe they can actually have a Premium offering that people should pay for!

AuntieStella · 20/04/2022 21:02

I expect they'll add them seasonally, just like they always did to the list

I just thought they’d add them as events appeared too.

they could have at least given us an emoji to sum up how we’re feeling about this new site - now that would have been fun

💩- finally a new feature which is useful. Even if I can't operate it with Dragon.

antisocialextrovert · 20/04/2022 21:27

The function to reset a thread on Threads I'm watching has gone. You now can either pin it or delete. Is there anyway to reset so you can go to the last post?

AuntieStella · 20/04/2022 21:30

Dragon is however still around!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 20/04/2022 21:31

Glitterball is still working, fortunately.

Why aren't the names in blue? I liked them in blue.

I'm on Windows 11/Chrome/PC and I'm struggling with the following:

  • The fixed width is really narrow so there's a ton of unused space. If it's possible to set it to responsive that would be great, or if not, maybe widen it for desktop users?
  • Tiny area to add a new message - would be great to be able to drag and expand this as you could on the old site.
  • Contrast - the contrast between the white posts and the pale grey background is pretty low and making me feel a bit snowblind. Dark mode or darker background would be great.
  • Pictures are tiny - this was a bit of a bugbear with the old site but they're even smaller now!
  • I miss having first/last/next/previous in addition to page numbers.
  • I miss having the post count at top of every page (not just the first page).
I do like a lot of the changes and appreciate it must have been a hell of day!
Winecheesesleep · 20/04/2022 21:53

I'm on android and I actually quite like it. It's not perfect but it looks OK for me and I really like that you don't need to press 'back' multiple times anymore to come out of a thread when you've opened a picture. Also that Threads I'm Watching can now be ordered by date it was last updated so I can see if an OP comes back to update an older thread.

Gladioli23 · 20/04/2022 22:04

Next problem:

Does anyone else's enter button periodically not work?

On another thread (though interestingly not this one) pressing enter created a new line but didn't move my cursor to it - I had to click down manually. (Chrome, Android, mobile site).

KathielovesNancy · 20/04/2022 22:09

I'm a very long term lurker and rarely post but this shit show has lured me out.
The site is not working on google chrome on a laptop - no matter what I do I get a 400 bad request saying the header or cookie is too large. Chrome is up to date and every other site is working.
It's a shame but after 17yrs I can't see myself sticking around
