Hello everyone.

After a bump in the road on last week’s attempt (sorry about that) we’re re-platforming Mumsnet Talk tonight. Because of this, the site will be down from midnight tonight (19/4) until 5am on Wednesday (20/4) morning.

For those of us resistant to change - don’t panic! The functionality of the site won’t change very much for now apart from some improvements to existing features like search and private messages. Our plan is to add more features/make updates once we are settled into the new platform.

However, there are a few things that you should be aware of before logging in tomorrow:

The first time you log on to Mumsnet post-replatforming you will need to remember your password. If you can’t (and let’s face it, few of us can) then you’ll need to reset your password. Sorry if that’s a pain - but it is the only secure way to do this.

You may need to update your browser. If you still view Mumsnet on an older browser you may experience compatibility problems with images, videos and links not working properly and you might not be able to post on a thread or fill in a form. To ensure you avoid these kinds of issues, we suggest you update your browser. Please click here for more information about re-platforming and how to update your browser.

And, not forgetting a massive thank you and unMumsnetty hugs to everyone who helped us test the new platform. You’re all stars. Star

If you’ve got any questions or comments, please add them to this thread.

Thank you.

Hi. I'm having issues with bookmarks on the app.

It won't remember them and flick to them when I open threads I'm watching.

The emojis also look weird!

TCMolly · 20/04/2022 19:12

Honestly, this is ridiculous and can't possibly have been extensively tested.
I always think that MN tech is someone's teenage son working out of his bedroom. FFS.

I've thought similarly before but given how many kinks, bugs and problems the new rollout appears to still have actually at this point a teenager in their bedroom would probably be more efficient.

If you are running Adblock+ you can use the "block element" feature to kill that annoying banner permanently.

Thank you SO much for this!

Baystard · 20/04/2022 19:28

Sorry but this is horrendous. It's barely possible to see more than a few thread titles or posts on the screen in Android, yet it also feels harder to read. I'm lost with quotes too, some of the longer messages ones don't appear on the screen without scrolling and then you lose track of who said what.

EarringsandLipstick · 20/04/2022 19:43

credit due for giving a mostly functional new site.

Except it's not! Certainly the app is barely working.

I haven't been using the website but all I can see are complaints about not seeing PMs, having to continuously log in & problems with font & display.

I fail to see what's 'mostly functional' about any of it.

I manage projects that use large complex platforms. Something like this would be a complete failure. Yes, there's always unexpected behaviour and loss of functionality but I've never seem anything as bad.

When things are problematic, we go back to the previous version while we sort it. We don't leave the shambles in place.

I agree re the testers, definitely.

AchillesPoirot · 20/04/2022 19:49

Some quotes aren't showing up in the app.

yeah you can't skim the page quickly, really quite tedious to read. What's the point in having half the screen blank at the side while scrolling endlessly? Crap user experience and boring. Feels like reading work email.

Quote works for me Grin

Thank you - I accidentally found it after reading your reply by clicking on the three dots to see what they did.

(Haven't flounced yet, as I had hoped I'd imagined all this and it would be back to normal now).

What's with all the weird lines on the left when people quote one another? I turned that particularly stupid thing off on my emails, so God only knows why MN has imported it. I can't tell who's said what.

I can also only see a couple of posts and have to do a lot of scrolling, which I cba to do as my arthritic fingers don't like it.

The font is very small and most of my screen (huge iMac) is white. I don't have a phone so want to be able to dick around on MN when I'm supposed to be working on my computer. Now this is sadly denied to me.

I am actually sad - I've been here for 20 years and I know everyone chunters about change, but these changes aren't just 'change': they are genuinely changes for the worse in terms of how user-friendly the site is. Maybe they're hoping that all the old bats like me will bugger off and leave the younger folk to their more modern take on it (though I won't miss people having to say that they are being "lighthearted").

Gah.

Ha! I can't make the namechange thing work, either. Just as well I wasn't divulging my fondness for bumsex or some such.

Hi - thanks for asking us. Am not finding this as user friendly as the old version.

I’m going to post 3 pics.
Pic 1 - the old site zoomed out on iPad landscape.
Pic 2- the new site zoomed out on iPad landscape.
Pic 3 - the new site zoomed out on iPhone.

Things I’ve spotted:

  1. No advanced search.
Sometimes this really is needed to help posters.

  2. No refresh button.
This enabled us to talk in real time.

  3. The font is far less bold meaning it is harder to read. More of an issue as we age… or for people with vision impairment.

  4. Blank area to the side in landscape on iPad and at the top of iPhone.

  5. No instructions on how to cite a website ie .

  6. Please could you give us a glossary of the Mumsnet emojis. Am missing seeing the bunnies etc.

  7. The message box is tiny (taking up about as much space as the add image information and “+ add image” box) meaning that I have to keep scrolling up and down to read my message.

@JustineMumsnet is there any update please?

NobdieTheNob · 20/04/2022 20:20

I've just looked at Nethuns for the first time since about 2006. And lo: it is identical to this new, improved MN. Including huns who spell "etc" as "ect". Etc.

Tiny font, only a couple of posts visible, and acres of white space either side.

Tut, tut.

Hercisback · 20/04/2022 20:26

This is what it looks like on my phone. Two tiny posts per screen.

Why is there so much space?

Oh god. We'll be getting told off for using 'curse words, ect' next. Oh wait ...

PossumSholom · 20/04/2022 20:30

Black screen is back - four times in the last few minutes but with no logo now.

DelurkingLawyer · 20/04/2022 20:30

Been looking around today and it’s pretty bad. Seems to have taken away a lot of functions people used (now hastily reinstated, like making thread titles purple after you’ve read them), failing to add stuff people wanted (like editing) and adding stuff nobody asked for like posts that are now ten deep in quoted posts.

The last is the worst. Just looked on AIBU and all you get on a mobile browser is a huge grey box of posts you’ve already read. Amateur hour.

SaintJavelin · 20/04/2022 20:32

I'm using a 1440P monitor and there's so much wasted space, actual posts take up less space than the wasted space.

If you click on the smiley face under the text box on the right hand side, then click on the big M, the MN emojis will appear. They couldn’t have hidden them better if they’d tried really.

Nottheshrinkingcapgrandpa · 20/04/2022 20:32

Earlier this morning when I my i phone I said that I could no longer click on request desktop site to get the same view as when on my laptop, it wasn't changing anything. Tonight doing the same gives me a 400 Error.

I am now on my laptop- when I click on a topic I'm watching, it's taking me to the beginning of the thread and not to where I lastclicked. I also don't seem to have anywhere to click to open the whole thread at once

Another voice saying this update is bloody awful. I can't put my finger on why I don't like it, but it's hurting my eyes because it's really hard to read.

Ach well, tata mumsnet - might actually talk to my DH and DD now.....

I have the same thing- it is hurting my eyes whether on the laptop or iphone...

MajorCarolDanvers · 20/04/2022 20:36

Its great.

And its not been a disaster like another parenting site had a year or so ago.

Well done.

Agree - you can no longer see who posted last on threads in Active, topics etc - taking away the names takes away the sense of community

And makes it much harder to spot if a thread's been commented on since you last saw it. People are much easier to remember than a timestamp
