October lockdown?

Hi
I can’t see another thread on this and I think it’s more Scotland than general CV related.

Any thoughts on this? I’m a teacher and there’s been no word at work but I’m hoping to go away for a week in half term (west coast) and really really hoping lockdown doesn’t happen! Selfish I know, but we need a break!

Anyone got any views on the likelihood?

There do appear to have been rumblings, but that is all. Entertaining dc with a week off if travel is restricted and cafes are shut etc is going to be a joy. I don't think a one week lockdown would make much difference, would need go be two minimum, which raises other problems.

WaxOnFeckOff · 04/10/2020 15:02

A while ago I thought it was defo on the cards, now I'm not so sure, I think it was kept as a warning for folk "to do as they are telt" but I don't think that has worked.

If my accommodation in the Lakes is open, i'll be going regardless. Apart from the fact that I don't believe in the current strategy, we have done as we have been told, not had any holidays, don't engage in "risky" behaviours covid wise and are going as one household to self catering accommodation, to walk in the countryside and no toilet stops would be required and are going from a lower positive test area to a lower positive test area (and we've 99% already had it).

dementedpixie · 04/10/2020 15:05

Don't know. Not everyone in Scotland gets the same amount of holidays in October. Some get 2 weeks but we only get 1 week.

Lidlfix · 04/10/2020 15:05

I am already facing loss of a much needed family holiday if there is another lockdown Sad. It will be a real blow to many families if there's another school holiday that coincides with a 5 mile travel restriction. We have a fortnight as we are having the week we lost (when we could have travelled freely and shared accommodation with another family in the UK) it will be so detrimental to children to face another 2 week spell stuck at home.

Jason Leitch has said the r number is currently too high for the circuit breaker approach to do what it needs to.

I will be heartbroken if, after a brutal term, I can't go from one area with low rates to another will low rates . And have days out visiting DD3 at uni etc .

WaxOnFeckOff · 04/10/2020 15:10

We booked the week of 19th off expecting it to be the week after the school hols, but is that now the 2nd week now it's been added lidl?

DS2 not joining as as too far a treck from uni and technically not allowed, even though he's barely left his accommodation. DS1 taking a laptop to do the few Uni classes he has on-line while we are away.

My head is set that we are going as you can tell!

Jodri · 04/10/2020 15:25

I do not think there will be any more of a lockdown in Scotland over the spaced out October holidays.
Schools in my local authority are on their two week break now, so those in charge have missed boat here. I’ve heard lots of folk are off on a holiday.

dementedpixie · 04/10/2020 15:26

We get the October week and it starts next Monday (12th)

Goingdooolally · 04/10/2020 15:28

Sounds like we’re all in the same boat! We won’t go as it’s Skye/Applecross area and they will not be happy with holidaymakers (not to mention I’m sure our rental will cancel)-fair enough.

OP posts:
Goingdooolally · 04/10/2020 15:29

We’re booked from the 16th. I’m on holiday from the 9th for 2 weeks.

I mean we won’t go if there’s a lockdown

We have the 2 weeks off 12th and 19th and have booked to go away for a few days. There has been no mention of preparing for online teaching, as some posters in England have been suggesting and as a PP mentioned, some areas of Scotland have already started their hols.

I can't see it happening and will be very disappointed if it does as it's been a tough term and I think staff and kids need a break.

Schooltrips · 04/10/2020 15:44

Do all those that are having 2 weeks off normally get 2 weeks? Or has an extra week been added on for Covid reasons? I’m in Glasgow so it’s 1 week as of this coming Monday.

RaraRachael · 04/10/2020 15:49

We always have 2 weeks. We had to come back a week early in August and chose to take that week next June by finishing a week earlier than normal.

WaxOnFeckOff · 04/10/2020 15:59

Stirling normally have one week but two this year due to the early return. I think they've been talking for a while of having two weeks in October but in the meantime my DC have grown up and left school.

trumpisaflump · 04/10/2020 16:13

I don't think this will happen now either. It's too close to the start of the holidays to do this. It will almost completely destroy the Scottish tourist industry if a travel restriction is introduced. We're going to the Lake District too and I really need a break away from work in a hospital where covid patients are starting to build up again.

Lidlfix · 04/10/2020 16:29

Yep Wax we were scheduled to have wc 12th off in Stirling but had the following week added to replace our lost week. No September weekend so this time , to go for walks, catch up with family (outdoors or in a carefully chosen places with tills Hmm) is much needed.

You probably were surveyed years ago when your DC were primary age about a 2 week October break. It wasn't carried out properly so couldn't go ahead despite overwhelming favour from parents and teachers. We were surveyed again (correctly this time) and Stirling is moving to a 2 week break in Oct 22. By then, like you, I will be finished with school as a parent (yippee) and hope to enjoy some winter sun .

WaxOnFeckOff · 04/10/2020 16:41

Yes, I remember being surveyed and then nothing happening, wasn't surveyed this time so DC must have left or I paid no attention as they were about to leave.

I'm still too much of a sap and don't like to not include DSs if we book anything and neither get an October week, I like to have time off then so as to spread out my holidays from work.

This year it's sort of worked out as all uni stuff is on-line. DS2 and GF decided that it's too long to come for just a few days as we can't get in until 4pm (or maybe 5?) on the monday and need to be out be 9am on Friday. Technically he's not supposed to mix households anyway, though he and GF have no-one else moved into their flat so are enjoying their love nest Hmm Grin

Goingdooolally · 04/10/2020 16:49

My DD1 will be staying at Uni(in England) as she’s only just gone! I wonder how many will he going abroad. We were going to book (Turkey) but I’ve just not got the stomach for a trip abroad (and I’m normally an avid traveller)

We’ve been told to take what we need home with us, get everything in our cloud, think about an online provision (like we did from March to June) just in case things change.... (teacher at independent school).

I imagine it is a bit late for this circuit breaker if it was supposed to coincide with school holidays. Some places have already started them. And I'd hope the schools would be told something before they announce it. Maybe that's just wishful thinking...

tigger1001 · 04/10/2020 17:13

Some schools are already off on holiday while only hers aren't due to come off until Friday. So it's difficult to time a lockdown to
Coincide with the holidays.

We get two weeks here and always have done.

There has been some talk of a "circuit breaker" lockdown I can't see it going ahead without it seriously impacting schools in some areas. Doesn't mean the government won't decide that's a price they are happy to pay.

I do think there will be further restrictions - maybe a ban on travel for leisure purposes much like in April and may maybe?

WouldBeGood · 04/10/2020 17:22

There are still rumblings today that they “can’t rule it out” and that usually means it will happen.

It’s really shite to leave people and businesses wondering and worrying. They should say what’s happening.

waitforitwaitforit · 04/10/2020 17:36

They've been talking about it a lot, probably to get us used to the idea. I read on Twitter that they would be announcing it on Thursday but who knows? If it is Thursday that's spectacularly shit as everyone will have to cancel their holiday plans (big or small) at the last minute. I've already had to cancel mine as we were to stay with my parents so going swimming is the only holiday plans we have. Surely keeping public opinion on side is something that's at least being considered.

Mistressiggi · 04/10/2020 18:24

So would a Thursday announcement actually fall at the end of some region's two week holiday?

WaxOnFeckOff · 04/10/2020 18:29

Also rumbling about doing something with Glasgow and surrounds, might they be restricted and the rest not?

dementedpixie · 04/10/2020 18:30

Don't know. I'm north Lanarkshire so there's worry about numbers here
