Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you long to hear Pip again, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3853783--The-Archers-spoilers-thread-5-Cant-wait-for-7-02pm-Join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to @LillianGish and @PersephonePromotesEquanimity for the title suggestions.

Current events: as @Bailey0703 has astutely spotted, it's Anti-Slavery Day tomorrow - could this herald the beginning of the end of the horses storyline? I do hope so. Horrible stuff, but what a blow for Kirsty. They're laying on the dramatic irony with trowel at the moment.

What do we think will happen to Alice and Chris? I can't see this pregnancy going to term and ending well. Sad I don't think the marriage will survive either, giving Brian a chance to revisit his classic line about having to treat this as Alice's starter marriage. Grin

Will Elizabeth end up on a date with Vince Casey? That would put the cat among the pigeons at Lower Loxley.

Over to you ...

I don’t see why the baby would have to be given up. Chris could leave Alice and have solo custody as a responsible parent. I’d drop my husband in an instant if the choice was stay with him or lose my children. What century are we living in when a father in charge is not even considered? I would prefer in this instance to see Alice decide on an abortion rather than continue to inflict suffering on her baby.

Roysnewshirt · 20/11/2020 14:13

I think what I am also saying here is that the doctor might have been a bit swayed by the fact that Chris was in the room bleating on about what was best for the baybee

I found the GP appointment more upsetting than the scene in the bathroom. Two highly irritating men telling Alice what is best for her and her baby. They were hectoring in tone, pressuring her to agree with them and promise to be a good girl. If that was my GP I would probably have asked to see someone else in private - after I had scored another miniature from the secret lining in my handbag. Alice’s main problem at the moment is she is worrying more about Chris than herself.

Is Radio Borsetshire a BBC local radio station? Does anyone know?

It sounds as though it should be, from the name, but I'm not sure.

Or is it one of those dreadful commercial stations? 😉😉

Prestissimo
This was a first consultation between two very distressed patients and a GP who probably has never met them before.

Well, no: there was only one patient present. The other person in the room was not his patient.

Chris wants the baby, but Alice is the one who has the right to be told her options properly, and one of those options is an abortion for her health's sake. In Chris' presence she cannot admit it if she wants an abortion, can she.

Just as in Rob's presence Helen was not able to tell the midwife that he was abusing her, which is why that midwife should have insisted on seeing Helen without her husband there, instead of flirting with Rob and telling Helen how lucky she was to have him.

@theThreeofWeevils

She’s quite far on for an abortion. But she seemed to be almost hoping the baby had died.

Alice has never wanted a baby and was initially very uncomfortable about being pregnant, so half-hoping for a solution which didn't need her to make an active decision seems highly likely - and understandable.

But god forbid any Ambridge woman should be able to avoid accidental pregnancy or to terminate an unwanted one without drama.

Very longtime lurker, but have been wondering for ages. theThreeofweevils, are you in real life a teacher, or a priest, or a counsellor or similar? Is this forum the volcanic spout for the repressed fury that can't be vented in your everyday life? Not judging, just curious.

@Pinafore - we have moved to the new thread. Click Gasp0de's link just above your post.

I absolutely agree with theThreeofWeevils on this point:

"But god forbid any Ambridge woman should be able to avoid accidental pregnancy or to terminate an unwanted one without drama."

Apart from Annette -- and the drama round that was all Helen being a drama-queen, so it was just business as usual really.

But it is unusual for anyone in Ambridge to procreate without drama, come to that. If it isn't in some way an emergency birth, the baby will have a hare lip or clicky hips or a hole in the heart or Down's syndrome, and if it manages to avoid these, why then it will get juvenile arthritis or bitten by a viper.

There are exceptions: Poppy was born with no complications (so far), and the only drama about Alice was her being conceived to be the cement that held her parents' marriage together.
