Only if it turns out Starmer knew all this detail about Epstein and Mandelson’s relationship.

But it seems unlikely.

PinterandPirandello · 03/02/2026 15:31

The other parties will certainly make capital out of this.

peanutbuttertoasty · 03/02/2026 15:32

Hope so. Both are traitors

What's emerged now raises questions about Starmer's judgement in appointing Mandelson Ambassador to US. M is said to have lied, or at least been economical with the truth when asked whether there was anything in his past that might bite but one might expect there to be records held by the security services.

While those of us prepared to cut politicians who were misled some slack might sympathise a man with a bitten bum I don't think there's much doubt Starmer's credibility with the man on the street has taken a hit.

Analysis on lunchtime radio news was that he's now at a point where losing the Gorton by-election might be fatal.

Pineneedlesincarpet · 03/02/2026 16:18

Its a tricky one. For consistency and to avoid accusations of hypocrisy I suppose yes bearing in mind Boris was ultimately brought down by dodgy appointments (I am regularly told on MN).

I think his credibility with the man, and woman, on the street has taken a hit sometime ago, and with quite a diverse range of sections of the population.

He's a terrible Leader, largely because he tries to follow rather than lead, but lacks the political astuteness to read the country and instead listens to the loudest lobby groups. And that's why his credibility was in tatters way before this.

Unfortunately, many of his named contenders are not any better. So it may be from the frying pan to the fire for the country.

By itself the Mandelson affair will not bring him down. As others have said. But it is yet another thing that has gone wrong. These unforced errors will finish him soon. Arguments and strife over this By Election will be enough.
He is not a leader he is a middle manager and has a fierce bunch of enforcers to stop all the new backbenchers asking questions.

UrbanFan · 03/02/2026 17:03

Hopefully yes

Hazlenuts2016 · 03/02/2026 17:04

Could it bring down Farage too? Lots of references to him. Possible Russian connections. They never did convincingly rule out Russian involvement in Brexit.

As far as I have heard theres been no references to Farage in his pants, getting JE to procure underage girls or giving state secrets to JE to pass on to whoever wants them. So thats wishful thinking on your part.

JE doesnt seem NF's style really but thats just my own opinion.

Double Lol - I quite like having a really boring pm - he’s not setting the world on fire, but seems to have decent working relationships with those who want to do so.

Hazlenuts2016 · 03/02/2026 17:56

@Pineneedlesincarpetyes not quite his style but has been best mates with Trump who is referenced a lot. I don't think Farage will be caught up in any of the abuse scandal but wouldn't be surprised if business and/ or Russian ties lead back to Farage and the Brexit campaign.

Hes not boring. He has a boring voice. But theres no way this shitshow has been boring. Horrendous of course and damaging. But not boring. And its only going to get worse with this and the trial of the arsonists in April.

We shall see. I think theres a lot they need to go through and a lot they can see is missing!

I think you're right. But I don't think it will bring Farage down unless he has broken the law.

You hope. You might be disappointed though.

Why? Do you think Mandelson is going to get off scot free? I dont think so

AtIusvue · 03/02/2026 18:06

Even when he was first appointed, Mandelson was seen as a controversial choice because of other past behaviours.

It’s obvious they knew. Intelligence would have this info. Mandy was chosen to be the US ambassador because of his connections and ability to schmooze.

I agree. Surely if Starmer knew all this he wouldn’t have appointed him Ambassador.

@StarChamber what will Boris be sent to jail for?

caringcarer · 03/02/2026 18:11

I really hope so. With Starmer it's a series of incompetence judgements. He appointed RR as chancellor and she consistently lies from her CV to pretending to win a chess tournament when she was only something like 27th. He appointed Raynor tax dodger. He appointed Mandelson who had to resign once before due to dodgy behaviour so he definitely knew he was dodgy before he appointed him. Add that to taking a whole range of freebies from dresses for his wife, glasses, and suits to Arsenal hospitality and Ariana Grande tickets. Then there is his poor judgement and decision making in general, he also appointed Lammy who is giving away the Chargos Islands and paying billions to rent them back, which I really hope Trump puts a stop to. I read in the paper he is wanting to give asylum seekers new council houses above the people who have been on the wIting list for many years. He is the worst PM I can recall, worse than even Truss.

Don't forget he really made sure innocent British soldiers were unfairly prosecuted and wanted to do it so much he worked for free.
