Social referral.. never had this before and absolutely terrified

Speech & language referred to SS apparently school have raised concerns also but not said anything. Allegations are dental neglect and that his teeth “look dirty” - has weak teeth dentist visit today confirmed reduce in sugar but otherwise all dental care perfect brushing by ourselves and no issue with brushing teeth all being done as should. Required some treatment which was given but nothing out of the ordinary or extreme. Dentist said it’s just where he has has previous treatment and stains it looks “dirty” but nothing wrong. He has routine appointments we attend all and he goes to any treatments they plan.

Permanent stain on school clothes - they raised stains or marks on school jumper. Clothes always washed but has got a permanent small stain about 5mm wide on one and a couple of very light pen marks on the other.. they don’t come out I’ve tried.

Says he has a dirty neck sometimes.. he has a bath at least twice a week, usually plays outside school in the mornings before they go in with his friends in the grass on the field & also eats a breakfast pastry on the way to school and he’s not a clean eater. Could be from that but he is bathed and cleaned regularly we are not dirty people!!

Now have to wait for a SS call or visit, absolutely beside myself as he is extremely well cared for the anxiety is horrific thinking people think he might not be cared for when it couldn’t be further from the truth

Why be so nasty?

Did she include nightclothes? Clean nighties/pyjamas for everyone every day? I really doubt it. You can't exactly wash those in the bath or sink, yet they spend a lot of time next to the skin overnight. Most people could manage clean undies and socks every day, but not every item of clothing that touched their skin.

Of course you can hand-wash a nightie.

And where will you leave all these items of clothing to drip dry in a small terraced house without a bathroom, which is what we were originally talking about? As for handwashing flannelette pyjamas, the kind worn by most working-class men in the past, try dripping those dry...

The fact is that your experience is not the same as mine or other people's and your granny's ideas about hygiene are just that - hers. I think this exchange has gone as far as it's going.

I think you have to accept that your family just werent very progressive in some ways. You'd dry it outside most of the year and on a clothes horse in the kitchen for the rest. You also wring out the clothes after washing. Can tell you've never been to prison!

Two baths a week isn’t ok. That’s not good hygiene op. He starts the day off playing out, sweaty and messy eating, uses the toilet daily so why doesn’t he need to bath daily? Especially with this weather.
A child who doesn’t bath/shower regularly or daily doesn’t suddenly become a teen who does. Good hygiene starts from young. I also have two kids with severe eczema and not one of the paediatric dermatologists I’ve seen has ever said not to bath daily.
the rest doesn’t sound too bad but seems like they put a lot of things together to have been concerned enough.
it could end up nothing, so just wait and see

Me and my kids all have eczema, the gp very strongly advocated for less baths for my kids and literally said they don’t need to bath everyday

Zapx · 27/08/2026 20:53

For everyone advocating for the twice a week bath - do your kids do sports/are active?

No

My middle child had horrendous skin it would flare and itch and go wild no matter what he was washed in fortunately he wasnt sporty because sweat made his skin flare too he was bathed once or twice a week it was a performance slather him in pre wash cream cool shower slather him in post wash cream lotions etc we had to get by using flannels and judicious wiping and more cream now he is older he keeps himself clean but everytime he shower's its the same itching rash that takes ages to calm down even plain water sets him off like he is intolerant to water its a nightmare to live with

I'm gonna jump in here to defend the bathing twice a week thing.
Some people are obsessed that their children need daily baths or showers..but actually they're really drying for the skin and not always a good thing.

As long as the child is washing: daily filling the sink and washing hands face neck etc. Alternate days for a bum wash is fine!

However, it does depend on the child. Some are smellier, or do sports, some hit puberty earlier etc.

My biggest pet hate is when kids (or adults) have dirty fingernails, because I think that's a telltale way of seeing someone is dirty and unkempt.
Soak hands, nail brush = job done.

OP I'm sure it's nothing to worry about, if you have nothing to hide then you don't need to stress!

No. Alternate days for a bum wash is not fine.

Unless your children have been reported to social services by TWO DIFFERENT agencies for how dirty they are, how the fuck is this relevant?

They will probably just ring you.

2 baths a week is fine IMO if pre-puberty and not doing anything excessively muddy.

I agree 2 baths a week is fine, so many posters saying you need to bath kids daily, I just don’t agree.

My kids are really busy with school and extracurriculars we usually only manage 2 baths a week. One on a Sunday evening, one midweek. The rest of the time they have a wash at the sink.

It’s entirely relevant in response to the post I quoted.

mathanxiety · 28/08/2026 20:35

A dirty neck is a big issue. It means the child is either not being bathed, or the 'bathing involves just sitting in the water with no active washing. A dirty neck shouldn't be a regular thing to observe

Is it at all relevant to the thread or it is part of distracting from the thread?

A distraction from a thread the op never returned to after her first post?
Okkkeeeey then…

there’s a lot of people sharing their own stories on here that aren’t necessarily related to the specifics of the Op.
do you hound people on all the threads where there might be a slight digression or is it just this one and just me?

God I can just imagine these nasty children sweating over someone in beds as adults who still think daily washing is a waste of time. So many women have had awful experiences with men who have obviously been risen within this cultural norm of infrequent bathing. It's revolting.

This is a side issue of not washing properly. People get into bed and absolutely stink, then the bed smells and they sure as hell are not washing their bedding if they aren’t washing their bodies.
Other soft furnishings like cushions and blankets and chairs and sofas will smell too…
Its a vicious cycle and they end up living in a world where they stink and everything around them stink, their kids stink and they don’t see a problem with it because it becomes the default.
