PippiLangstrump · 27/05/2007 21:21

Ellbell · 27/05/2007 21:45

Ciao a tutte... Just checking in in order to keep my Italian friends in my 'threads I'm on'. Am halfway through marking a pile of essays, so going back to that now.... ma tornero'.

Pippi... in bocca al lupo for the packing. I sympathise. A year ago it was me!

francagoestohollywood · 27/05/2007 21:53

ciao ellbell. dh's been marking for the whole weekend. Lots of disappointing 50...

Ellbell · 27/05/2007 21:57

I'd love to post some of the crappy attempts at 'translations' from Italian on here, but it would be unethical. I've had a few which have been ROFLissimi!

I have yet to beat this one, though... from many many years ago, so I'm sure it's safe to post it:

Gatto nero porta fortuna = Black forest gateaux, lucky door

(That was a first year though...)

mediterraneo · 27/05/2007 22:19

Che ridere! gatto=gateau - if only it were so easy.
Good luck with the packing. I am going to bed with a book and a hot cup of milk. Still raining, I feel I am in a Checkov play.

Lol at chekov play
and lol at lucky dor. sounds like one of those translations done by websites.
Ds is starting to mix English and Italian up:
Today he said : "xx ha scribbleato sul foglio" and the other day: mamma sei andata in quel posto dove una volta abbiamo comprato il latte e i magazzini (cioe' i giornaletti)? poverino!!!

PippiLangstrump · 27/05/2007 23:04

DD does that already too: sometimes the poor soul instead of libro she says bookO!

francagoestohollywood · 27/05/2007 23:10

bless her!
my dad asked dd: what's pesce in English.. dd, with an english accent: pesch!

whenever i came back from italy i used to speak english with italian grammar... i remember asking 'do you know where is the house of Mary? and my friend just going 'wha'?'
i am loving the verb scribblere, it's on my list of New Favourite Made-Up Words.

Rosa5 · 28/05/2007 08:20

I have all that to come my dd is just starting to talk. I am really trying to talk 100% English but when I am out with MIL and surrounded by Italians I feel its rude to talk in English to her. BUt when we will be in Uk this summer then it will be up to daddy to talk 100% Italian but we are taking a couple of videos and dvds. Oh well we will see what she comes up with.
Buona bank holiday .

francagoestohollywood · 28/05/2007 09:30

Lol Aitch, ds talks in Italian with English grammar, always the adjective before the noun . (una grossa, molto bellissima casa)
rosa, do you know other English people (possibly with children) in your area?

PippiLangstrump · 28/05/2007 10:21

Aitch whenever I go back to Italy I speak my friend laugh at the way I speak: once I said 'buonezza' instead of bonta'!! in.

well fed up with this rain.. we are going out today regardless otherwise pippi will start playing football in the hall

PippiLangstrump · 28/05/2007 10:21

my english is to be desired as well tis morning by the sound of it...

hi Pistachio you are not gate crashing, the more the better.

I am italian DH is english so at first I felt it was a bit unfair to speak DD italian as he would not understand. Firstly, do not underestimate DH's intelligence as mine is picking up italian at the same speed as DD. Secondly they will work it out by themselves eventually. At the moment because i am with her more than DH is she is more keen on italian (also watches italian cartoons etc). although she might be super fluent in english too for allm I know as she spends 3 days with english childminder.
I feel a bit unconfortable at time when with MIL or SIL as they do not understand but I always remember that the minute she goes to school italian will be second place...

please stay with us.

francagoestohollywood · 28/05/2007 11:53

ciao pistachio, my advise is to speak to your little one, in the language you are most confortable with. If this is Italian, do speak to her in Italian. Chances are that she'll never utter a word in Italian, preferring English, but she'll understand it with no probs

francagoestohollywood · 28/05/2007 11:54

where are you going this summer pistachio?

Rosa5 · 28/05/2007 14:04

I don't have any english friends with children which is a pity . I have one American friend but her boys are way older . DD only has Italian 'friends' but when we are in the Uk I hope to meet with a few english friends with toddlers and as I am there for a few months I would like to go to tumble tots or similar if it does not break up fr the summer.
Agree with DH picking up the languages. My dh spoke some English but when my mother took up Italian ( at 60) he thought he had better do something about his English so he started watching english Tv , reading and now it is much better.

Ahhhh that's a nice area pistachio. Your dd will be fine on the plane, it less than two hours. Bring lots of different snacks and stickers!

PippiLangstrump · 28/05/2007 18:45

DD has discovered Barpapapa' and became obsessed with them... should I change my name to barbamamma!!!!

the pippi household came back soacked to the bone from a trip to the west end with a new speedo costume for Mr Pippi (as usual!), a dungaree for minipippi (as usual!) and nothing for pippi (as ususal!)
