Where do your London friends live?

OP posts:
francagoestohollywood · 29/05/2007 22:03

If you shave it means you are that hairy then... I can't possibly just shave, I'd drawn in hair within a week...
Don't ask, I'm still reading the honorary consul, it took me ages to read the first 100 pages, didn't like it (but I recommend l'americano tranquillo). But now I'm really gettng into it, it's getting better. Next I have the last book from kurt vonnegut. vanity fair is good. did you see the bbc film a puntate?
they live in Belsize park.

francagoestohollywood · 29/05/2007 22:03

you are not that etc etc

mediterraneo · 29/05/2007 22:07

ahh, it's lovely Belsize Park.
No, didn't watch the series on the telly, I love stuff like Grand Design and other property porn programmes. And all those programmes about people moving to Tuscany to build a new life. I always tell dh why don't we do it, and he always looks at me bewildered.

We will have to compare polpacci (calves?) then. and armpits. the moustaches will be easy to check.

OP posts:
francagoestohollywood · 29/05/2007 22:14

I watched years ago (2001, maybe?) as it was part of a module of a hideous ma I took just to waste even more of my time. Ah I love the property porns as well. Why do people buy houses in Tuscany, transforming them into hotels without learning the basics of Italian well in advance always puzzles me.

mediterraneo · 29/05/2007 22:23

lol at wasting more time. the amount of courses i have done in this country is incredible, you name it, i have done it, and what i am now? a housewife! lol. Just started reading Simon Gray's diary, very funny.

Ellbell · 29/05/2007 22:27

Sorry, you two, but I am PMSL at the thought of you two having a meet-up just to check which one is hairier!

WTF to people move abroad with no knowledge of the language and then look surprised that people don't all speak English? Why? It makes me ashamed to be British.

Anyway, help me... sono invitata al consolato di Manchester per un 'reception' sabato prossimo. Cosa mi devo mettere secondo voi? I am clueless about these things....

mediterraneo · 29/05/2007 22:34

ellbell, i am having a panick attack for you! la povera. Ti devi vestire bene! Li' non ci sono dubbi.

Unfortunately I spend my days in stained clothes, unkempt hair, etc, my latest attempt at dolling myself up ended up with butter down the front of newly bought linen dress.

I think Franca is fashionable though (being from Milan and all that) (possibly related to the Benetton family) - let's wait for her advice.

OP posts:
mediterraneo · 29/05/2007 22:35

I personally wouldn't wear those big hats that English ladies like to wear for special occasions (no offence taken, my personal opinion, hats might be big in Milan this season, who knows..)

OP posts:
francagoestohollywood · 29/05/2007 22:36

. consolato italiano a manchester.... mmmm... I'm not the most fantasiosa... I'd probably go for the ubiquitous LBD, and wear more adventorous shoes (which in my case only translate in perhaps gold ones...)
Mind you that plenty of Italians managed to live in broccolino without speaking much english...
and don't start me on ingrowing hair, I could go on forever
actually ellbell, have you got any suggestion on English novels set during wwII?

Ellbell · 29/05/2007 22:37

Thankfully I am blonde so have the body/facial hair thing pretty much under control. But I have no style. Mi devo vestire bene, questo l'avevo capito anch'io... ma poi...??? Tipo cocktail dress? (OMG... I do not have the figure for such a thing, and I am soooooo pale and pasty.)

francagoestohollywood · 29/05/2007 22:37

. I admit I have a monthly subsciption to vogue...

francagoestohollywood · 29/05/2007 22:39

lol at body/facial hair thing pretty much in control . No, I'm not related to the benetton family !

mediterraneo · 29/05/2007 22:40

Ahhhhh! I knew it! Related to Benetton, for sure!!!!!
I think you have in growing hair because you wax. I just have a lot of hairs, but no ingrown ones!
Cocktail dresses make me think of something out of Cotton Club, I am sure I am wrong.

OP posts:
Ellbell · 29/05/2007 22:43

No chance of me wearing a hat. (Like at a Buckingham Palace garden party????)

Novels set in WWII? Have you read 'Charlotte Grey'? 'The Night Watch' by Sarah Waters is just out in paperback, but I haven't read it. I have gone completely blank now... will keep thinking.

francagoestohollywood · 29/05/2007 22:44

pmsl @ cotton club.

Ellbell · 29/05/2007 22:45

Aaargh! I need to shop! But it's half term and I have Mt Everest of marking on my desk...

francagoestohollywood · 29/05/2007 22:46

no, I'm not related to the benetton, otherwise I'd have a villa in cortina and a flat in manhattan.

francagoestohollywood · 29/05/2007 22:49

I have some kind of unjustified snobism in relation to sara waters. don't know why. will try that.

Ellbell · 29/05/2007 22:49

Yeah... and you'd be more helpful to me in my style crisis!

I can't wear gold shoes. I'd start laughing every time I looked at my feet! (I am VERY boring and conventional. And not very good with heels.)

Also, I was thinking of going to Manchester on the train, as I don't know where to park etc and I will be so stressed if I get lost. But I don't know if I can cope with (possibly) heels and all this vestirmi bene stuff AND going on the train....

Wish I'd thought of a previous engagement!

mediterraneo · 29/05/2007 22:49

ok, ok, and you wouldn't be living in Devon.

I am off to bed with Simon Gray who is completely out to lunch, and brings tears to my eyes. Never read his plays, meant to be one of the greatest living British playwrights, not as bleak as Pinter.

OP posts:
francagoestohollywood · 29/05/2007 22:52

I'm pathetic on heels btw, never actually wear them. what about a nice pair of ballerina shoes? with nice trousers?

francagoestohollywood · 29/05/2007 22:54

night night med. maybe I'd also have a villa in devon, say, salcombe and I'd hang around with one of these english stylists who get married in cornwall in teepees...

Ellbell · 29/05/2007 23:00

Yes. I think nice trousers and a really smart top is the answer. And flat shoes, for sure!

Buona notte, med.
