This is the feedback thread for the 250 Mumsnetters and their babies, who have been testing a range of HiPP Organic baby food jars of both breakfast and savoury dishes.

Here’s what HiPP Organic have to say about their jars: “with our nutritious recipes, including a pure veg range, your child will develop a love for a variety of foods - including savoury and sweet. Offering more vegetables than fruit during weaning helps move your little one away from a natural preference for sweeter tastes, which may help reduce fussy eating later on. That’s why at HiPP Organic, our savoury recipes taste savoury.

“Jars allow babies to see and smell the food they are tasting, which is important for food recognition and acceptance. They’re also perfect for feeding with a spoon, encouraging hand-eye coordination and self-feeding.

“For more than 60 years, generations of babies have been raised on HiPP Organic's delicious and organic food. In fact, the family-run business produces the only organic jar range available in the UK!”

Testers, please give your feedback by answering the below questions and completing the survey we’ll email you shortly.

  1. Would you recommend HiPP Organic jars to a friend or family member about to wean their baby?
  2. Would you buy HiPP Organic jars again?
  3. Of the 8 HiPP Organic jars, which was your baby’s favourite?

  1. Would you recommend HiPP Organic jars to a friend or family member about to wean their baby?

Yes! My son lives them and they help me out on the days I am working and don't have time to cook a meal.

  1. Would you buy HiPP Organic jars again? YES and I already have. My local area has them.
  2. Of the 8 HiPP Organic jars, which was your baby’s favourite?
The sweet squash and chicken
  1. What did you and your child like and/or dislike about the HiPP Organic jars you tried? He liked them all apart from the fish one. The jars were quite small so I had to give him too.
PenguinSalute · 18/01/2018 15:31
  1. Yes I would recommend these to a friend
  2. I may buy them again as a quick meal but prefer pouches in terms of carrying when out and about, and would prefer a bigger/more calorific meal
  3. DD loved the buttered veg, and then the sweet ones went down well too!
  4. I thought the consistency was good, as it didn’t go watery. Was also good to know that organic options are available at a more affordable price than Ella’s Kitchen! The downside for me was that DD really struggles to put on weight, so I had hoped for some more calorific options, they were mainly quite low calories. She isn’t a big eater so giving more than one jar wouldn’t be an option for us. Overall they were good though!
annasmummmy · 19/01/2018 19:11
  1. Yes I would, especially the breakfast options
  2. Yes definitely
  3. Creamed porridge
  4. The porridge she loved but the consistency could turn watering during feeding.

  1. Would you recommend HiPP Organic jars to a friend or family member about to wean their baby? Yes I would
  2. Would you buy HiPP Organic jars again? I definitely would in the future, but my LO is preferring thicker food now.
  3. Of the 8 HiPP Organic jars, which was your baby’s favourite? All the savoury ones were eaten with no obvious preference between them
  4. What did you and your child like and/or dislike about the HiPP Organic jars you tried? The flavours were varied and interesting and the consistency was good. The sweet ones weren’t enjoyed quite so much as maybe a bit gloopy

I really had no preconceptions on this. I know there is stigma for jars vs pouches and I was ready to go e them a go but my son just would not eat them. I don’t know if it was the texture. I tasted a couple and they tasted a little artificial to me but he wouldn’t touch them. It’s a shame. We still have a couple in the cupboard that I didn’t bother opening as he just wanted eating them.

  1. Would you recommend HiPP Organic jars to a friend or family member about to wean their baby?
If they wanted to use purées as a first step although they were all very smooth so good for only the early stages
  1. Would you buy HiPP Organic jars again?
I don't think so, DS isn't a big fan of purees
  1. Of the 8 HiPP Organic jars, which was your baby’s favourite?
Spaghetti bolognese
  1. What did you and your child like and/or dislike about the HiPP Organic jars you tried?
I liked that they were convenient, DS likes^ that^ ^they were messy! DS^ wasn't^ a fan^ of^ some^ of^ the^ flavours, the banana^ yoghurt^ in particular!

  1. Would you recommend HiPP Organic jars to a friend or family member about to wean their baby?

Yes I would.

  1. Would you buy HiPP Organic jars again?

I would certainly buy the desert / yoghurt style jars. My baby didn’t seem keen on most of the savoury flavours, but I would put this down to her preference, rather than anything being wrong with the recipe. I’ve used a mix of home made food and pouches when weaning, and now she’s mostly having what we have for dinner mashed up. I think the jars are perhaps a little bland when she’s been having stronger flavours with us. She’s also used to more texture now. The jars are quite smooth.

  1. Of the 8 HiPP Organic jars, which was your baby’s favourite?

Banana yoghurt breakfast. My baby can’t get enough of this one! I’ve already been out to buy more!

  1. What did you and your child like and/or dislike about the HiPP Organic jars you tried?

I like that there’s an enormous selection available. So much choice and variety. It’s easy to get stuck in the same meals pattern. For a 6 month old baby starting out with weaning I think these jars are an excellent option. I would certainly look to use these with my next baby. I wanted to try the jars in this product test, because I’ve always considered jars to be inferior to the pouches. I don’t know why I had this notion, apart from maybe seeing the jars of slop being dished out to my brother twenty years ago. The packaging perhaps makes a different too, with the jars seeming old fashioned compared to the modern pouches. But I’m pleased to have been proven wrong. I’ll absolutely buy the jars next time round. Glass jars are also much easier to recycle too, which appeals enormously.

  1. Would you recommend HiPP Organic jars to a friend or family member about to wean their baby?
Yes - my one year old son loved these jars. I found it a really good way to get veg into him when he was being a bit fussy with eating due to being ill or teething.
  1. Would you buy HiPP Organic jars again?
Yes - they are not substantial enough now that my son is 15 months old, but it's a great way to get veg into him when he's being a bit fussy.
  1. Of the 8 HiPP Organic jars, which was your baby’s favourite?
Difficult to tell as he ate all of them very enthusiastically. If I had to guess I would say the spaghetti bolognese.
  1. What did you and your child like and/or dislike about the HiPP Organic jars you tried?
As above, I loved that it was a good way to get veg into him when he was being a bit fussy with his food because of illness or teething. If I could change anything, I would make the jars available in a bigger size.
6monthsandcounting · 24/01/2018 21:42

1- yes, and I already have to my bump and baby group pals
2-they are now a regular feature on my shopping order. I had very little maternity leave so the idea that I could wean purely on home cooked food was tricky. I also thought jars were a bit taboo, but I like the fact they are easily recycled, unlike trendier pouches.
I feel good supplementing my sons diet with these when we're out and about or when I haven't had time to cook something from scratch.

3- the sweet squash and chicken is a total winner! But he loved the fish pie, porridge and banana yoghurt too. The porridge is a good emergency standby for mornings when we don't have enough milk to make his fresh (it happens)

4-I personally like the fact that the pureees are quite thick, and don't contain some of the sharp preservatives like lemon juice found in other brands which my son pulls faces at.
I also personally like the flavours- they taste nutritious and I would have eaten the fish pie one myself if my baby hadn't scoffed it all : )
I find the portion size just right- my son is 8 months and has been a slower weaner than some it seems, so a whole jar is a good meal for him.

6monthsandcounting · 24/01/2018 21:46

Worth saying I would probably never have tried these if not for this trial, and I'm really glad I did as I they have helped me learn what flavours and consistencies my son likes, and understand portion sizes a little better.

BabyMoonPie · 25/01/2018 06:31

I'd recommend these and I'd buy again. DD's favourite was fish pie. I liked that they tasted of what they were supposed to be - other jars can be bland and samey

rainingcats · 25/01/2018 16:52

1.yes they were well liked by my baby and handy for days out and travel

  1. Yes would buy again and reccomend
3.spag bol was the favourite 4.lots of choice and good portion size. Was not as keen on the sweeter flavours
MustSleepNow · 21/02/2018 21:18
  1. Would you recommend HiPP Organic jars to a friend or family member about to wean their baby?

Yes. I'd recommend for someone starting to wean but not for an older baby as the jars are quite small.

  1. Would you buy HiPP Organic jars again? I would but I would have to try their range aimed at older babies. Mine was 10 months when I treated the products and Although he really enjoyed them they were too smooth for him and the portion wasn't large enough
  1. Of the 8 HiPP Organic jars, which was your baby’s favourite?
Banana yoghurt
  1. What did you and your child like and/or dislike about the HiPP Organic jars you tried?
Baby liked all of the flavours but I thought they were too smooth and too small for his age (10 months).
