This is the feedback thread for the 250 Mumsnetters and their babies, who have been testing a range of HiPP Organic baby food jars of both breakfast and savoury dishes.

Here’s what HiPP Organic have to say about their jars: “with our nutritious recipes, including a pure veg range, your child will develop a love for a variety of foods - including savoury and sweet. Offering more vegetables than fruit during weaning helps move your little one away from a natural preference for sweeter tastes, which may help reduce fussy eating later on. That’s why at HiPP Organic, our savoury recipes taste savoury.

“Jars allow babies to see and smell the food they are tasting, which is important for food recognition and acceptance. They’re also perfect for feeding with a spoon, encouraging hand-eye coordination and self-feeding.

“For more than 60 years, generations of babies have been raised on HiPP Organic's delicious and organic food. In fact, the family-run business produces the only organic jar range available in the UK!”

Testers, please give your feedback by answering the below questions and completing the survey we’ll email you shortly.

  1. Would you recommend HiPP Organic jars to a friend or family member about to wean their baby?
  2. Would you buy HiPP Organic jars again?
  3. Of the 8 HiPP Organic jars, which was your baby’s favourite?
  4. What did you and your child like and/or dislike about the HiPP Organic jars you tried?

All testers who complete the required feedback will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a ÂŁ300 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

  1. Would you recommend HiPP Organic jars to a friend or family member about to wean their baby?
I probably wouldn't, to be honest. Maybe I'd say using one or two now and again would be ok but I wouldn't recommend relying on them.
  1. Would you buy HiPP Organic jars again?
No, I wouldn't
  1. Of the 8 HiPP Organic jars, which was your baby’s favourite?
Probably the buttered vegetables.
  1. What did you and your child like and/or dislike about the HiPP Organic jars you tried?
They are very convenient to take out and about; I kept one in my bag while we were Christmas shopping and visiting relatives and they came in really handy! Unfortunately I wasn't a big fan of the ingredients, and my baby wasn't a big fan of the tastes. They were vey bland and really pretty much all carrot. The one with aubergine in the product name had 3% aubergine! The meat/fish content in all of them was low too, at 8%. The fish pie one tasted and smelt of fish paste. The others were all very similar in taste and were very smooth so not something I'd want to use past the very first week or two of weaning. The sweet jars were pretty high in sugar but went down well. All in all, there was a limited range of tastes, all very sweet because of the reliance on carrot, and with a really low protein content. (sorry!)

Would you recommend HiPP Organic jars to a friend or family member about to wean their baby?
Yes, they went down well!

  1. Would you buy HiPP Organic jars again?
Yes, and I will. I've been using Ella's kitchen and cow and gate but these definitely went down better
  1. Of the 8 HiPP Organic jars, which was your baby’s favourite?
The creamy porridge, the banana breakfast yoghurt and the pasta ones, and the fish pie! In fact she loved all of them!
  1. What did you and your child like and/or dislike about the HiPP Organic jars you tried?
Smooth, tasty (had a little taste myself), easy to eat, resealable Didn't dislike anything, though I don't know what the retail price is so that might have influenced my feedback if I did.
Womble75 · 28/12/2017 20:26
  1. Would you recommend HiPP Organic jars to a friend or family member about to wean their baby?
Definitely - I used them to wean DD and am now using them with DS
  1. Would you buy HiPP Organic jars again?
Yes
  1. Of the 8 HiPP Organic jars, which was your baby’s favourite?
He really enjoyed the Mediterranean veg with aubergine.
  1. What did you and your child like and/or dislike about the HiPP Organic jars you tried?
I like the texture and so does he. The texture is great. Not runny but not too thick but thick enough it doesn’t splatter everywhere. Was really pleased to see a fish option in the new products as this is something I have bought other brands for before. The recipes are great and full of different flavours. The range is great and gives plenty of variety. I will continue to feed him Hipp until he moves onto more solid food. My only dislike is the jars aren't big enough for an 8mo and he will eat more than one for a meal so larger sizes would be great.
rhardwick945 · 28/12/2017 21:27
  1. Maybe. DD did like most of the foods but she perhaps was a little too old for the selection and prefers a little more texture now (she's almost 1)
  2. Yes absolutely would recommend. She nommed down her food quicker than ever. Except the banana yogurt, not a hit!
  3. Buttered veg appeared to be her favourite although all went down pretty well.
  4. Only feedback really is texture. These were a bit on the smooth side for an older baby. A few more lumpy bits please!
bendywindy · 28/12/2017 21:51

jars to a friend or family member about to wean their baby?
yes i don't see why not. although i would point out i only give jars when out as i think it's important to cook fresh.

  1. Would you buy HiPP Organic jars again?
yes
  1. Of the 8 HiPP Organic jars, which was your baby’s favourite?
well we've only tried two (tomato pasta and porridge) and he ate a bit of both. he's been unwell though so hasn't had much of an appetite.
  1. What did you and your child like and/or dislike about the HiPP Organic jars you tried?
the jar is a handy format (previously only tried bags) and no sugar or salt, organic, good thickness.
Bearfrills · 29/12/2017 22:20

1. Would you recommend HiPP Organic jars to a friend or family member about to wean their baby?
Yes, if it came up in conversation.

2. Would you buy HiPP Organic jars again?
I probably will depending on which flavours at stocked at my local supermarket.

3. Of the 8 HiPP Organic jars, which was your baby’s favourite?
The banana yoghurt, DD wolfed it down.

4. What did you and your child like and/or dislike about the HiPP Organic jars you tried?

Liked: the convenience, the range of flavours, just the right amount in each jar for two meals (DD is 10mo but has a tiny appetite so only has around half of one of those jars as a meal), liked that the leftovers keep for up to 24hrs in the fridge.

Disliked: they're very orange, aren't they? All of the savoury ones were bright orange, presumably from all of the carrots in them, so I felt like I was giving her generic orange stuff for every meal. The flavour combinations on offer aren't particularly different to other brands on the market so there's not really any flavours there that I can only get from HiPP.

I haven't gotten a link for a survey yet either.

Changerazelea · 29/12/2017 22:21

-Really loved the hipp jars
-Will definitely buy again, have already done so
-DS loved the squash and chicken and the fish pie, porridge also a favourite

  • I really like that jars are environmentally friendly. Had previously used a lot of pouches before reading recently in The Times about how the pouches are not widely recyclable. Also reusing the jars for homemade puree. I really liked the consistency just right for first weaning.
-disliked the size should be bigger DS just 6mo top centiles and could eat another half jar
GirlfromMars10 · 30/12/2017 07:42
  1. Yes, as something easy and quick to feed a baby when you don't have the time or energy to prepare something yourself or you are out of the house.
  2. I would certainly buy HIPP again although my son is getting too old really for the little jars.
  3. The banana yoghurt one, although he enjoyed most of the flavours.
  4. I liked the convenience of having something available quickly. Some other testers have commented that they would worry about taking the glass jars out but I've done this a few times and never had any concerns about breakages. I also like the fact the jars can be recycled and are therefore more environmentally friendly than pouches. I did notice that the savoury recipes are very carrot focused and I wasn't a fan of the orange mess! That said, I'd rather the jars had a higher vegetable content rather than fruit.

  1. Would you recommend HiPP Organic jars to a friend or family member about to wean their baby?
Yes I would, they’re quick and easy. My son liked them cold so perfect for taking out and about.
  1. Would you buy HiPP Organic jars again?
Yes I would (and have done since I finished the product test)
  1. Of the 8 HiPP Organic jars, which was your baby’s favourite?
He loved the spaghetti bolognaise and the buttered vegetables. He wasn’t so keen on the breakfast ones.
  1. What did you and your child like and/or dislike about the HiPP Organic jars you tried?
He liked the texture (he’s 8 Months but weaning has been slow due to illness). The portions were perfect for him, some he finished and some spread over 2 jars.
Dermymc · 30/12/2017 08:42
  1. Would you recommend HiPP Organic jars to a friend or family member about to wean their baby?
Yes, I'm assuming they will be cheaper than Ella's and also more environmentally friendly.
  1. Would you buy HiPP Organic jars again?
If there were bigger jars with more texture then yes. My lo is almost 1 so they were a bit smooth.
  1. Of the 8 HiPP Organic jars, which was your baby’s favourite?
Spaghetti bolognaise and the aubergine one. He didn't like either of the breakfasts.
  1. What did you and your child like and/or dislike about the HiPP Organic jars you tried?
Loved the glass jar aspect, better for the environment as they can be recycled. They also seemed to smell like what they were supposed to be (although fish pie was grim smelling!). I'm going to check them out in my local morrisons.
Dermymc · 30/12/2017 08:46

Also I have received the survey email so not sure what to do.

ErinSophia · 30/12/2017 10:58
  1. Definitely would!
  2. Yes
  3. She loved the creamy porridge
  4. We liked everything about the jars couldn't fault them.

  1. Would you recommend HiPP Organic jars to a friend or family member about to wean their baby?

Yeah absolutely

  1. Would you buy HiPP Organic jars again?

Yes and I have done. Bought some yesterday

  1. Of the 8 HiPP Organic jars, which was your baby’s favourite?

Either banana yoghurt or spaghetti bolognese- he loved both

  1. What did you and your child like and/or dislike about the HiPP Organic jars you tried?

They were just the right size for my 7 month old. I followed up one or 2 of the jars with a pudding but it's nice to have the opportunity to give them fruit or yoghurt with a main meal.
Since buying them I've noted that they are half the price of Ella's kitchen which is a fantastic plus, they're also more grown up - I don't really like twee packaging.
He really likes the taste which I was surprised at because he doesn't like other jars - he usually only eats pouches or homemade.

  1. Would you recommend HiPP Organic jars to a friend or family member about to wean their baby? Yes, definitely
  2. Would you buy HiPP Organic jars again? 100% my little one loved them
  3. Of the 8 HiPP Organic jars, which was your baby’s favourite? Rice pudding & buttered vegetables
  4. What did you and your child like and/or dislike about the HiPP Organic jars you tried? Tasty & easy for him to eat... we tried another brand which he dislikes but they seem bland in comparison to the hipp jars
billybear · 30/12/2017 16:10

1 yes highly recommend to anyone about to wean their baby,2 yes i would buy again, prefer plastic tubs not glass jar lighter to carry and safer no risk of dropping it , 3 fav fish pie was our fav ,easy to use/plenty of chooice in flavours but yes a bit small in size .or are we greedy lol,4 would buy again for convenience ,quality product we know we can trust to use with our children thank you for let us try them

gamerpigeon · 30/12/2017 17:30
  1. Would you recommend HiPP Organic jars to a friend or family member about to wean their baby?

If they were looking to feed their baby readymade food then it's one of the ranges I would suggest, I think.

  1. Would you buy HiPP Organic jars again?

Maybe - I try to cook from scratch as much as possible so would depend on the range available, cost and whether it's on offer anywhere.

  1. Of the 8 HiPP Organic jars, which was your baby’s favourite?

She liked the aubergine one, the fish one and the spag Bol the best. She really hated the one with courgette, which is odd because she will happily eat pieces of courgette but it did taste fairly bitter to me.

  1. What did you and your child like and/or dislike about the HiPP Organic jars you tried?

My baby liked almost all the jars - I felt they were pretty samey in flavour with a lot of carrot used which I wasn't too keen on. The fish one also smelled really strong which put me off a bit but she liked it!

I don't think the glass jars are great for going out although it was super easy to heat them up in my baby's bottle warmer as they were the perfect size for that. My baby is nearly 8 months now and they were about the right portion size for her but definitely were too smooth.

Bee70 · 30/12/2017 20:54

Thank you for letting us try these jars! My daughter is 8 months old and tends to eat the same as the family, but we use preprepared food for out and about and occasionally at home

  1. Would you recommend HiPP Organic jars to a friend or family member about to wean their baby?
Yes I would. Overall, these jars tend to go down better than other brands, and they are a good size.
  1. Would you buy HiPP Organic jars again?
Yes this is my preferred brand. I use them for out and about and as emergency stock in case she doesn't like the freshly cooked food on offer.
  1. Of the 8 HiPP Organic jars, which was your baby’s favourite?
The absolute winner was the sweet squash and chicken. She wolfed it down, complaining that I was going too slow. I too liked the flavour of this one more than the others
  1. What did you and your child like and/or dislike about the HiPP Organic jars you tried?
The creamy porridge was too bland for her tastes. She would only eat it with some fruit mixed in. She also wasn't keen on the courgette one and this seemed to have a strange taste to it so I'm not surprised. I was impressed that the fish pie smelt and tasted of fish as often the meat/fish part is such a small percentage that you can't taste it. The jars are very sturdy which is good. It would be great to have a 10month+ range which was more chunky
godsteeth · 30/12/2017 23:14
  1. Yes definitely.
2.Yes they were better than the other two well known brands I have tried.
  1. I think it was the buttered vegetables
  2. He liked all the savoury ones but wasn't as keen on the dessert and wouldn't eat the porridge at all, it didn't have enough sugar. He ate it after I added a spoonful of sugar.
FizzySmiles · 31/12/2017 10:22
  1. Would you recommend HiPP Organic jars to a friend or family member about to wean their baby? Yes, they are very good first foods.
  1. Would you buy HiPP Organic jars again? I would be maybe an older stage as my son is 8 months and eating much lumpier/textured foods.
  1. Of the 8 HiPP Organic jars, which was your baby’s favourite? Spaghetti bolognaise or buttered veg.
  1. What did you and your child like and/or dislike about the HiPP Organic jars you tried? I liked that when i tasted them, they didnt seem to have added salt or sugar.

I tasted all of them as i gave them to my son (i believe that it needs to be good enough for me if im giving it to my son). They tasted quite bland to my taste buds but thats because ive experienced salt and sugar. I was pleasantly suprised at how well my son ate these foods. The porridge one tasted much less sweeter than his usual baby porridge and yet he loved it. I like to watch my childrens salt and sugar levels as i do not want them to 'need' it to be able to eat and feel these jars offer a great natural taste.

Only con to these jars was that my son is at a higher stage in terms of consistency. He is now able to have big chunks and finger foods. This didnt stop him enjoying them though as he demolished all of them very well.

I prefer homemade food where possible but am not against the ease of jars. I tend to get them when i eat unhealthily and want him to eat well. I will definitely be buying these again in the future (but an older stage).
Thank you for letting us try them.

loopylou1984 · 31/12/2017 15:14

1 : yes absolutely

2 : yes and I already have done

3 : the buttered vegetables and the chicken and squash

4 : my twins enjoyed all the savoury jars, and were happy to eat them hot or cold which is a plus for when we're out and about. They did not enjoy the breakfast jars, I think possibly they are just too used to their usual porridge.

Youresovain · 31/12/2017 15:29
  1. Yes I would recommend.
  2. Yes I would buy them again - but the jars for 7month plus.
  3. He actually loved them all but particularly liked the bolognese.
  4. I love that the ingredients are all organic, the recipes are actually quite flavoursome and unlike some other brands we've tried, he has not rejected any of the flavours. We mixed some of them with cooked pasta to add some textures.
DoctorGilbertson · 31/12/2017 17:50
  1. Would you recommend HiPP Organic jars to a friend or family member about to wean their baby?

Probably, if it came up in conversation. They were fine.

  1. Would you buy HiPP Organic jars again?

Probably. I don't really care about organic food but I like that they don't have added sugar or salt.

I agree with the person above who said that the glass jars aren't ideal. Pouches are nice because you can squeeze them straight onto the spoon. Or could you do a yoghurt pot type thing. I disagree with the person who said that the jars were too small. We found them too big and each jar does 2 meals.

How about some fruit ones? It took a bit of time for the baby to get used to them, but he seemed to like them at the end.

  1. Of the 8 HiPP Organic jars, which was your baby’s favourite?

He liked the pasta ones. In the interests of scientific rigour I bought some different brands as a control and he quite liked them too.

  1. What did you and your child like and/or dislike about the HiPP Organic jars you tried?

I think that for me all the advice is "feed your baby family food" but I take lots of high salt short cuts in family food (jars of sauce etc) so while the baby is so young I like similarly easy short cuts that are OK (jars of baby food etc.)

He is nearly 7 months now and not very good with lumps yet. I guess it will come with time. He has only really got the hang of purees in the last week or so.

Winningbeauty · 31/12/2017 21:23

Tester experience

  1. Would you recommend HiPP Organic jars to a friend or family member about to wean their baby?

Yes definitely, nice texture, my baby ate most of them with valour, nice to be reassured that the jars contain no additives, also good portion sizes for my baby with little wastage.

  1. Would you buy HiPP Organic jars again?

Yes, I like the variety of options and I've noticed that the jars are often on offer which is even better!

  1. Of the 8 HiPP Organic jars, which was your baby’s favourite?

Banana yoghurt was his favourite by far, he lapped this up and I have since bought it again.

  1. What did you and your child like and/or dislike about the HiPP Organic jars you tried?

Likes:
I liked the texture, this was a good consistency for weaning and my son also seemed to like the texture.

The fruit options my son loved. I didn't try any personally.

Portion sizes are good for weaning but I imagine in a month maybe two these jars will be too little.

Easy to warm up in the glass jars.

Dislikes:
My son didn't take to the penne option.

Although I thought the consistency is good for weaning, I don't think I'll be using the jars for too long as I would like him to have more solid food soon.

The glass jars are useful for warming however not so good for travelling, we had one broken jar in the bag when we travelled. Pouches are much better for this.

Overall a good starter option for early to mid weaning, however I would liked some of the options to have had more solid texture so that the jars have longevity throughout.

theAntsareMyFriends · 31/12/2017 21:53
  1. Yes. The ingredients list was short with no hidden nastiest and they tasted fresh and similar to homemade (I tried them too!)
  2. I would still try to stick with homemade but it is really useful t have some jars in the cupboard for convenience. DS liked these more than my homemade ones too so think I will treat him to the occasional ones.
  3. The pasta and tomato sauce one and the bolognaise
  4. He liked the texture and thickness and seemed to find them easy to swallow.
I liked that they were organic. He wasn't keen on the porridge as he likes stronger flavours. The first time he had the porridge the texture was fine but he only ate a bit so I put it back in the fridge and gave more later and I found it seemed to separate and go quite watery over time.
Cadensofia1 · 31/12/2017 23:49

I would most definitely buy again my DD loved the creamy porriage but Did nt dislike any I love how they are the right thickness not to runny and easy enough to just open and feed especially when you are out i will definitely be buying again as i love that they are organic as well winner in our house
