I thought I would start a thread for films from the 70s and 80s which you enjoy but most people have forgotten. Here's a few to start you off:

Rolling Thunder
Time after Time
Somewhere in time
Star Trek IV the voyage home.

I'll add more in a while,
Feel free to add yours.

I love this as well as all the other brat pack films!

I will add La Bamba about Richie Valans who died other same plane crash as Buddy Holly (I think)

Am sure will think of some more

I love that she got the boy and the diamond earrings eventually!

The Sure Thing - John Cusack.

Not obscure but the soundtrack for Working Girl is fabulous. Can't beat a bit of Carly Simon.

ConnieHeart · 13/11/2025 21:15

Tim, great performance from Mel Gibson
Another vote for Clockwise! John Cleese on top form with a great cast including Alison Steadman & Penelope Wilton
American Friends - I developed a bit of a crush on Michael Palin after seeing this

Music Box with Jessica Lange (1989): A lawyer defends her father accused of war crimes, but there is more to the case than she suspects.

Black Rainbow with Rosanna Arquette (1989): A reporter begins investigating a traveling clairvoyant after she accurately foretells the circumstances of a violent murder.

The China Syndrome (Jack Lemmon, Jane Fonda and Michael Douglas). Brilliantly understated disaster film.

Wings of Desire - beautiful German film about angels and a cameo from Peter Columbo Falk

Falling Down (another tense Michael Douglas classic)

The Long Good Friday (Bob Hoskins and Helen Mirren) -so many great quotes. It’s Good Friday, have a Bloody Mary. And - You Don’t crucify people. Not on Good Friday!

Jacob’s Ladder (Tim Robbins) - surreal and scary

So many good choices above. Love Weird Science!

trainedopossum · 14/11/2025 15:15

After Hours is an unlikely funny and goofy Scorsese film, NYC as it really was in the 80s.

Classiccar1 · 14/11/2025 15:42

Some good ww2 films:
Yanks with Richard Gere
Hope and Glory

Keep your suggestions coming I'm really enjoying them.

Lots of these are main stream though!
The Steve Martin films of the 80s-so the Jerk, Man with 2 Brains, All of Me, Dead Men dont wear plaid.
Mel Brooks films-To be or not to be, which is a word for word remake of the Ernst Lubitck film of the 40s, but both brilliant. High Anxiety.
One my kids used to love - Explorers-kids build a space ship and meet aliens- honestly its lots of fun.
Babettes Feast. A cook in 19 century Sweden is charged with cooking a special feast, she's always cooked plain food, but she's a cordon bleu chef. I know sounds dull, but its honestly gripping and beautiful.
My favourite year.
Company of Wolves
Lair of the white worm. (Its hysterical, so camp) see also Gothic and The Bride
Fanny and Alexander
Local Hero. (Denis Lawson. I still so would) Gregory's Girl.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 14/11/2025 16:58

Oh another favourite- Angel Heart, Mickey Rourke was so beautiful.

ConnieHeart · 14/11/2025 19:34

Silver Streak & The Woman in Red - both Gene Wilder

HellsBells13 · 14/11/2025 19:39

Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence
Prince and the Pauper

I have just watched Don't look now, so thank you for the iPlayer heads up.

It's a very strange film. God ..I did not remember all that sex. Had to forward that bit 🤣

Redshoeblueshoe · 14/11/2025 22:06

Mumteedum that was exactly my reaction. Also I will be avoiding anyone in a red duffle coat for the foreseeable 😂
