I thought I would start a thread for films from the 70s and 80s which you enjoy but most people have forgotten. Here's a few to start you off:

Rolling Thunder
Time after Time
Somewhere in time
Star Trek IV the voyage home.

I'll add more in a while,
Feel free to add yours.

Desert Hearts. It was so good to have a lesbian film without a tragic ending. And the soundtrack was great.

WinterBerry40 · 12/11/2025 17:44

The Rose
Death becomes Her
The Omen
Weirdly , I am also quite partial to a spaghetti western ( various titles )

Redshoeblueshoe · 12/11/2025 17:45

@tobee Talking Pictures is the channel for you. Cactus Flower with Walter Matthau is on now,

cariadlet · 12/11/2025 17:52

If we're going for less well known films, I'd recommend Pelle the Conquerer and My Life as a Dog.
I haven't rewatched them since but saw them both when they came out and loved them.

efeslight · 12/11/2025 17:52

Yes, the Burbs...I'm a shell of a man because of you😆

Play Misty For Me. That was good.

Good, but terrifying! I love Clint Eastwood. I have a great weakness for Dirty Harry. He was in a few duff films in the 1970s but he got into his stride as a director during the 70s and 80s and most of those are great.

Sunday Bloody Sunday
Get Carter
Murder on the Orient Express (1974 version - far, far better than the Kenneth Branagh remake)
The Go-Between
Dog Day Afternoon
The Conversation

The pp mentioning John Cusack reminded me of The Grifters. 1990 so not strictly 70s and 80s but pretty close.
Anjeluca Houston is great in it.

BurntBroccoli · 12/11/2025 18:07

Love Quadrophenia - 1979.

singthing · 12/11/2025 18:29

Little Nikita - River Phoenix and Sidney Poitier. RP finds out his parents are Russian sleeper spies. Filmed late 80s, so right in the Cold War.

War Games - Matthew Broderick. Fun computer goes rogue tale (again Cold War!).

And can I have an extra that is much older please?
The Million Pound Note - 1950s Gregory Peck as an easygoing Yank who arrives in genteel London and ends up subject of a bet between two posh blokes (yes there are shades of Trading Places). Lovely film.

That’s reminded me of another great film of hers - Enemies A Love Story (from 1989). Hard to find these days, it’s only available on Prime.

Wow Id of said all of those. I love a time film. I would add star trek the final frontier.

Fried green tomatoes and steel magnolias

Don't look now. It was on last week. Brilliant film

Oh. What channel? Wonder if it's on catch-up. Haven't seen it for years and it's a classic.

blanketsnuggler · 12/11/2025 18:51

Mine have been previously mentioned..
Kramer v Kramer
Ruthless People
The Elephant Man

Mumteedum · 12/11/2025 18:51

I like some of the 1970s panarnoia films like the Andromeda Strain and Capricorn One ( with OJ Simpson which is weird).

Absolutely, it doesn't date either, the ending still gives me chills.

Kramer versus Kramer.

ChaToilLeam · 12/11/2025 18:53

I love those 70s sci-fis! Don't forget Invasion of the Body Snatchers as well, creepy! and Soylent Green!

Mumteedum · 12/11/2025 18:55

@singthing yes War Games is a good one.

Serpico is brilliant.

Three days of the Condor with beautiful Robert Redford.

Marathon Man... amazing film but not sure if it's less well known or not. Probably to younger generations.

Ihateboris · 12/11/2025 18:57

Rita, Sue and Bob Too
War of The Roses

beulaballbreaker · 12/11/2025 18:58

The so bad it’s good The Cassandra Crossing. I need a rewatch as it’s been quite a while.
I loved the Omen and Carrie.

Mumteedum · 12/11/2025 18:59

Educating Rita is a beautiful film. Haven't seen that for years either.

MyIvyGrows · 12/11/2025 18:59

Clue. One of Tim Curry’s finest, woefully overlooked. I have loved it since I was about 8 - slapstick daft comedy but also politically interesting underneath!

Countsounds · 12/11/2025 19:02

Who will Love my Children
Times Square

I love Somewhere in Time.
I like The Scarlet Pimpernel (with Antony Andrew’s).

Hotel New Hampshire starring Rob Lowe at his most delicious and Jodie Foster.

A very weird film indeed.
