I thought I would start a thread for films from the 70s and 80s which you enjoy but most people have forgotten. Here's a few to start you off:

Rolling Thunder
Time after Time
Somewhere in time
Star Trek IV the voyage home.

I'll add more in a while,
Feel free to add yours.

One Crazy Summer with Demi Moore, John Cusack and Bobcat Goldthwait (the chap with the crazy voice from Police Academy). It had cutting edge cartoon graphics . I had it taped on VHS and watched it repeatedly. No one else seems to remember it.

Edited

I've heard of it! My mate and I were briefly obsessed with John Cusack at uni and tracked down all his films we could get hold of. That wasn't one of my favourites tbh 😅

I will offer for the thread A Fish Called Wanda. Doesn't count as lesser known, really, but somewhat forgotten now. I saw it again recently and loved every minute.

A few more:

Broadcast News – great journalism film with Holly Hunter in excellent form.

Always – Holly Hunter (again!) and Richard Dreyfuss (again!!) in a very soppy film but I like it. I just checked the date (yes 1989) and realised the amazing Audrey Hepburn is also in it.

Miller’s Crossing – another early Coen brothers (the one after the excellent Raising Arizona I think) with a great performance from Gabriel Byrne and very much Albert Finney. That’s more of a thriller than my other suggestions (a bit gory) but great. Also Steve Buscemi in that one, pre-Reservoir Dogs. Actually just checked and that one is 1990 but let’s allow it anyway.

I saw it at the midnight movies in Cannock back in the day. It's very well made for an erotic film.
Loved the space ship and the giant!

I love this as well as all the other brat pack films!

I will add La Bamba about Richie Valans who died other same plane crash as Buddy Holly (I think)

Am sure will think of some more

Mydadsbirthday · 13/11/2025 17:17

I think these might be 90s but:

The thing called love, I think it was River Phoenix's last film. I was obsessed with him. It was about a girl who becomes a country singer and I loved country for a while after that.

Strictly Ballroom with Paul Mercurio. Loved that film. Yes I do think that's 90s actually.

Young Einstein. It was utterly bonkers but we watched it on repeat!

Do you mean Young Frankenstein?
If so, I agree. One of my favourites of all time; along with Shirley Valentine.

So many ....
Outrageous Fortune
Overboard
Jagged Edge
Betrayed
Deadly Pursuit
Catholic Boys
Amazon Women on the Moon

Mumteedum · 13/11/2025 18:42

Jagged Edge was good 👍🏻

Onethreefiveseven · 13/11/2025 19:10

Comrades. I love a good period drama and this is my favourite not just from the 80s but in general. It's about a bunch of farm labourers who get transported to Australia. It's visually beautiful and completely gripping. One of those films that feels completely authentic to the era. The nearest thing I've seen in recent times of probably wolf hall, which I also loved. It's got quite a few recognisable faces in it - Imelda Staunton, Keith Allen, Phil Davis - but it somehow slipped under the radar and isn't that famous. It should be.

Are you the farmer?

I could quote all of Withnail and I 🤣

berlinbaby2025 · 13/11/2025 19:40

Also - Falling in Love, which has one of Meryl Streep's most underrated performances. She plays a commuter in New York who has a fling with the Robert De Niro character. Think Brief Encounter circa 1984. It's set at Christmas and is easily available.

diggermama · 13/11/2025 19:44

Someone beat me to it with Weird Science!

EveryDayisFriday · 13/11/2025 19:46

I used to love Murder FX, not seen it for decades, I'm sure its aged poorly.

scalt · 13/11/2025 19:46

Another vote for Clockwise.

Brokeandold · 13/11/2025 19:54

The Big Easy-Dennis Quaid 😍

BeMellowAquaSquid · 13/11/2025 19:57
