I thought I would start a thread for films from the 70s and 80s which you enjoy but most people have forgotten. Here's a few to start you off:

Rolling Thunder
Time after Time
Somewhere in time
Star Trek IV the voyage home.

I'll add more in a while,
Feel free to add yours.

I find it pretty arrogant for anyone to think that because they personally haven’t heard of something, that it is “less well known.”

(I don’t even think it’s unreasonable for you to have not heard of it, but it is an iconic piece of 70s American cinema that won four Oscars.)

I adore Torch Sing Trilogy! What a shane the film has effectively disappeared.

SmockAndBeret · 16/11/2025 23:22

Please… can we just have a nice little thread about films without sniping, criticising or arguing? 😢

Agree with a PP about the 80s Steve Martin films, too!

Woohoo Princess Bride 😁

I’ll add Tango and Cash

Oh gosh, Midnight Express is an amazing film. It was the first film we ever watched on our video player. Obviously my mum didn't understand about film ratings 🤣. I think I was about 11

Fire With Fire is a very little known gem from the 80s

PInkyStarfish · 23/11/2025 21:25

Grosse Pointe Blank is my favourite film ever.
also
Baby Boom
Fierce Creatures
White Mischief

and a couple of TV films:
Lord of Misrule. (with Richard Wilson, sadly I can only find a hooky version on YouTube)
Last of the Blonde Bombshells.

breezyyy · 24/11/2025 09:08

Vanishing Point.

The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, 1974. Walter Matthau and Robert Shaw. Haven't seen the 2009 re-make but this falls into the category for me of 'Why on earth would you bother seeing a re-make when the original is really good?'

Absolutely! I loved Robert Shaw, gorgeous man with a fine acting ability.

One of my favourites of his was A Man for all Seasons.

He was great in The Sting too. Jaws obviously. Terrific Bond villain in From Russia With Love. Lovely gravelly voice.

Died at 51! That's sad, if not entirely unexpected given his lifestyle.

And his eyes!

Such a waste and he left 10 children. I’m going to have a nose now to see what they’re up to.

I saw one of his sons in a play based on the 3 main actors in Jaws called The Shark Is Broken, he played his own dad!
