I thought I would start a thread for films from the 70s and 80s which you enjoy but most people have forgotten. Here's a few to start you off:

Rolling Thunder
Time after Time
Somewhere in time
Star Trek IV the voyage home.

I'll add more in a while,
Feel free to add yours.

OP posts:

I have just watched Don't look now, so thank you for the iPlayer heads up.

It's a very strange film. God ..I did not remember all that sex. Had to forward that bit 🤣

Apparently Daphne du Maurier was a big fan of film, which I’ve always thought was very modern of her because of all the sex. Turns out she only ever saw the heavily censored American version!

Stephen Speilberg's first film, Duel is brilliant. Very simple story, about 3 characters, very tense

That film has always stayed me as a real suspense film...brilliant debut by Speilberg, and brilliantly acted by Dennis Weaver...who went on to star in many films and also played the title role in 70's TV's popular series McCloud.

I agree, a simple but brilliant film. I also love Misery for the same reason, though that's far more famous

What a great topic!

My favourite 80s films are:
American Flyers (Cycling film with Kevin Costner)
Ruthless People (Bette Middler and Danny DeVito)
Overboard (Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell)

I watched both and really regretted watching the Christine one when a few days later I had to walk home at 1.00 in the morning from a club. It was 4 miles of sheer anxiety, long dark roads with no escape route for when that car came crawling around the bend.

I don’t know why I wasn’t looking out for a big snarling dog as well.

This thread is MAD!

Literally the first post has a Star Trek movie as one of its "less well known" films!

Network! Network won four Oscars!

Someone has said Jaws! Jaws!!! WTF is Jaws less well known than?

Sunshineismyfavourite · 11/11/2025 21:49

The Elephant Man. I've only actually watched it twice in my life but it is probably the most powerful movie I've ever seen and it has definitely stayed with me.

They had a showing at our local cinema a few months ago, it was great seeing it on the big screen. Anthony Hopkins was so handsome.

Network won Oscars but it's an old film which I imagine lots of people under 50 (or even 60!) don't know.

Jaws I grant you, is not lesser known.

I'd forgotten about Tremors and watched it yesterday on ITVx so thank you 😀

Well, yes, but follow that argument and you can say any 70s film that isn't a Disney cartoon, Star Wars or Grease is an old film that people under 50 don't know.

Half the films on this thread are only lesser-known films to people who can name about five films.

Come on, people! Arthur? Airplane! Kramer v Kramer! All massive box-office successes.

Such a good film.

Fame
Yanks

eastsheener · 16/11/2025 14:08

The Poseidon Avenue & Foul Play (Goldie Hawn)

Mumteedum · 16/11/2025 15:12

@Masterbeth you're getting wound up over nothing. I didn't know network until I saw it by accident. I was two when it released. I love films and watch plenty so can definitely me more than five.

Some suggestions are probably more mainstream than expected but so what. It's a nice thread and a few of us have rewatched films we had kind of forgotten about, so that's a nice thing.

Apologies if suggestions are not obscure enough but it doesn't matter I don't think.

@Classiccar1 can decide!

MasterBeth · 16/11/2025 16:13

I'm not getting wound up. I am gently bemused.

Fame is a multi-Oscar winning movie that launched a six-season TV series, hit singles and albums, a stage musical and a 2009 remake. In what possible sense is it a lesser known 70s film?

I'd be genuinely interested to know from anyone who has listed celebrated Hollywood hits like Airplane, Witness, Fame or Arthur what they are comparing them to.

breezyyy · 16/11/2025 16:17

Overboard

Goldie Hawn
Kurt Russell

SmockAndBeret · 16/11/2025 19:38

Torch Song Trilogy
The Princess Bride
Angel Heart
Midnight Express
Little Big Man
The Conversation
La Cabina (if you want a bit of Spanish weird!)
Harold and Maude
Koyaanisqatsi - (unlike anything else. Ever!)
The Thing

Agree with a PP about the 80s Steve Martin films, too!

I'm in my 40s and obviously have heard of Star Trek and Jaws but I had to look Network up, never heard of it
