I thought I would start a thread for films from the 70s and 80s which you enjoy but most people have forgotten. Here's a few to start you off:

Rolling Thunder
Time after Time
Somewhere in time
Star Trek IV the voyage home.

I'll add more in a while,
Feel free to add yours.

OP posts:

I saw one of his sons in a play based on the 3 main actors in Jaws called The Shark Is Broken, he played his own dad!

That’s interesting! I’ll check that out.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 24/11/2025 15:30

I hadn't known about that before either. Great likeness. The son is Ian Shaw and he co-wrote the play. Wikipedia says it was well received and multiple reviewers said 'They're going to need a bigger theatre!' Grin

The original Freaky Friday! Jodie Foster and Barbara Harris were fabulous.

Blue velvet on LSD was an interesting experience.

Caravaggio by Derek Jarman, with a young Sean Bean and Tilda Swinton in two of the main roles. I think it was the first film either of them had done.

Maurice, the Merchant Ivory adaptation of EM Forster's novel starring James Wilby, Rupert Graves and Hugh Grant. Beautifully shot and acted, and a rare example of a gay film from the 80s with a happy ending.

Death Trap - Michael Caine and Christopher Reeve
Without a Clue - Michael Caine as Sherlock Holmes and Ben Kingsley as Dr Watson
Young Sherlock Holmes
Krull
Slipstream - a late 80s sci-fi film that no one seems to remember despite the cast including actors like Mark Hamill, Bill Paxton and Ben Kingsley.

berlinbaby2025 · 24/11/2025 22:47

Another gem - Garbo Talks (from 1984). It has a wonderful performance from the late Anne Bancroft and is on Prime.

Peter’s Friends - great film and great cast. I liked it much more than 4 weddings which was out at roughly the same time.

Letter to Brezhnev - fantastic film, never on TV and no one ever remembers it!

I haven't rewatched Peter's Friends since it came out. Maybe I'd enjoy it more now that I'm older but at the time, I found it too much of a luvvie fest.

Letter to Brezhnev, on the other hand, I absolutely loved.

youegg · 25/11/2025 05:44

War Games.

youegg · 25/11/2025 05:47

The Money Pit. Shelley Long and Tom Hanks being themselves and utterly hilarious.

I LOVE Peter's Friends! Haven't seen it for about 30 years though as it never seems to be around. I need to see it again!

I have it on DVD and stick it on from time to time as it is a favourite.
Great soundtrack!🙂

I think I'll treat myself to the digital copy when I get paid next month - it's a lovely film, very under appreciated. Bonus points for the inclusion of the very sexy Tony Slattery.

Oh definitely. His character is hilariously annoying. I've always had a bit of a thing for Kenneth Branagh too. I bet they all look really young now

breezyyy · 25/11/2025 17:04

These 3 films aren’t from the 80s or 90s but wanted to put them here in case anyone was interested in watching them (if not already seen).

The Integrity of Joseph Chambers

The Killing of Two Lovers

Katy Says Goodbye

Please… can we just have a nice little thread about films without sniping, criticising or arguing? 😢

Four Weddings and a Funeral
Casablanca
Toy Story 3
The Wizard of Oz
Wicked
The King and I
Oppenheimer

Livpool · 25/11/2025 21:32

Murder By Death
The Burbs
Young Einstein
Tremors

Globules · 25/11/2025 21:38

This talk of Bond reminded me of an absolute belter from the 70s staring Roger Moore.

I'm off to watch it now on Amazon. I haven't watched it for over 30 years. Thanks OP!

Jagged Edge absolutely one of my favourites

Good film.
I always get that one mixed up with another great 80s film: River's Edge. Featuring a young Keanu Reeves!

Perzival · 26/11/2025 18:01

Breakdance- corny but amazing soundtrack (Chaka khan, ain't nobody)

The boy who could fly- about a non verbal teen and his new neighbour. He does end up flying.

Short circuit 2- not sure it fits in to the lesser known category

Space camp- a group of kids at space camp get sent into space.

Can't buy me love- teen romance

Not without my daughter- a woman marries a man from another country, they goto visit his family, then aren't allowed to leave.

Real genius- Val Kilmer, i had a big crush on him.
