Is anyone else interested to see what happens here.

They are going to announce the Oscars nominations around 1.30pm today. If you are interested you can livestream at Oscar.com, Oscars.org,

I am hoping for nominations for Demi Moore and Marianne Jean Baptiste in the best actress categories, and also hoping for a few other surprises.

Yes I have it and I use it at least once a week. I was going to see Show Girl today but the dog is sick. Maybe tomorrow. I go on my own - most other customers are on their own during the day too.

What I love is when you virtually have the whole cinema to yourself.

Well his other film (Dune) got 2 Oscar's and he seemed happy about that.

Oh that's good. Didn't see that and haven't seen Dune. He is definitely an actor to watch.

burnoutbabe · 03/03/2025 08:20

Even meryl Streep?? lol

I don't know why that made me laugh, but it did. 😂

What about Dame Judi Dench? She hasn't played a prostitute (has she?)

One actress who didn't get an Oscar for playing a sex worker was Jennifer Lopez in Hustlers. I was convinced that not only would she be nominated for best actress, but that she would win. But no. Perhaps it was because she played a sex worker who didn't have sex: she and her colleagues would slip their clients mickey finns before taking off with their money, making themselves quite wealthy in the process. Of course they're not going to give an Oscar to a film where the sex workers have the upper hand. It was based on a true story.

I'm thinking of cancelling my Cineworld membership. They used to do lots of preview screenings and show a wide variety.

Today - the day after the oscars - my local is showing nine Tamil/Punjabi/Hindi films, Bridget Jones, captain America and two kids films. The second closest is showing eleven.

Not sure my local Odeon would be better. I'm also a picturehouse member.

Maybe try Odeon. My Odeon today:

Anora
A Real Pain
Conclave
The Brutalist
I'm Still Here
A Complete Unknown
Nickel Boys
The Last Showgirl
Bridget Jones
Sing Sing
The Substance
Wicked
The Monkey

Plus kids films, 2 Cantonese films and this evening MacBeth with David Tennant and Cush Jumbo (though you pay extra for that).

SocksAndTheCity · 03/03/2025 13:17

I cancelled my Cineworld membership a while back @Supergel1 , although a lot of that is because I moved and now live practically next door to my local independent.

I don't miss it, and I would likely have cancelled regardless (and my home Cineworld was the Leicester Square one so I had the IMAX and Superscreen/4DX screens too).

Your Odeon sounds great @Arran2024 😀

SocksAndTheCity · 03/03/2025 13:19

If there's an equivalent thread next year and I'm sure there will be, I'd be interested to know how many of the scores given were from seeing the films at the cinema rather than streaming them on TV.

I saw them all at the cinema, and I know I would likely have given some different marks if I hadn't (and a couple I possibly would have completely forgotten).

HRHTheQueenMuffinTop · 03/03/2025 16:18

I confess I am shocked that Conclave did not win something other than Best adapted screenplay. I thought the score was incredible- but then again you had two (?) musicals up against it. Plus of course A Complete Unknown.

There's a discussion about why the use of the term ' sex worker's is problematic, this is a good these about it:

The only people I've ever seen who have a problem with the term 'sex work' are those vehemently opposed to it and with an accompanying agenda to push, and certainly not sex workers themselves (whose inconvenient views and wishes such people have no interest in hearing). And Twitter is hardly a bastion of reasoned and thoughtful insight.

This thread is about the Oscars, though. Did you enjoy the films, @Appalonia ? I can't remember whether we got your marks out of 5 or not?

VictoriaSpungecake · 04/03/2025 09:24

Thanks for getting us back on track @SocksAndTheCity.

What's next for everyone? @burnoutbabe is aiming to watch all the winning films.

I'm not sure what I'm going to watch next now that The Oscars are over for another year. I want to see Mickey 17 and Hard Times.

OP posts:
SocksAndTheCity · 04/03/2025 09:29

I've seen the trailer for Mickey 17 a couple of times over the weekend @VictoriaSpungecake and I think it'll be worth a look (plus it's brought on a few Bong screenings - I'm going to see Parasite on Thursday 😀).

I really want to see Flow, which I think is out on the 28th; I wish we'd been able to see it before the Oscars but it's not far off. I'd love to know if anybody has seen it - I missed a pre screening last Sunday.

HRHTheQueenMuffinTop · 04/03/2025 11:35

DS is keen to see Flow. He is obsessed with cats so we are IN

I have a problem with sex work and I do have an agenda: to stop the tired old trope of the happy hooker. To stop the idea that it's somehow
empowering and liberating and only
tired old women disagree. To stop teenage girls from thinking that getting an only fans is an
empowering way to fast money. Admittedly Anora does show the abusive, seedy underbelly of sex work. It's no Pretty Woman. Thankfully. Prostitution is the exploitation of women.

Actually this DOES matter. Films aren't just about entertainment, they also promote certain values, and there's currently a huge push to normalize porn, prostitution, surrogacy, none of which are good for women. Let's see a film about the horrific affects of surrogacy on the poor women who provide it, or the poor children who are produced in this way. Will we ever see a film like this get financed, or win an Oscar? The answer is no...

Arran2024 · 04/03/2025 17:16

Article in the Times today claims that there is generally less sex in mainstream films these days because the Chinese market is conservative and doesn't like it, and that Anora basically bucked the trend.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 05/03/2025 12:11

Nickel Boys should have earned an award. Currently showing on Prime for free.

Thanks, I’ve been trying to work out how to watch this.

Thanks so much for this thread OP, really enjoyed it 😊

Watching the short doc winner - Only Girl in the Orchestra (Netflix) really interesting, worth a watch!

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/03/2025 15:52

Quite envious of all of the people who manage to get out to the cinema so often!

If anyone, like us, can’t get out so often and is interested, there’s a new channel on Sky with 100 Oscar Winning films (best film category if I understand it correctly).

Sorry for detail. As you were 😄

I'm retired! Just wait.

Oh we’ve just a few months to go, hopefully! Problem is my husband’s disability, he can’t sit through a film in often quite rigid cinema seats for very long.

We’re retiring to our flat in Perth though, where I understand the IMAX is very comfy, and the theatre too, so here we come 😁 I’ll be much more comfortable going alone there than where we currently are, too.

Watching the short doc winner - Only Girl in the Orchestra (Netflix) really interesting, worth a watch!

I also saw that yesterday and didn't interest me much at all. Mildly interesting is all I'll say.

My tastes are clearly low brow as the new Netflix doc about a family YouTubers convicted of child neglect I binged all 3 episodes over 2 nights.

Shall watch "no other land" this week. Then have to wait for flow at the cinema. The 2 other short winners no idea how to watch -unless they appear on YouTube now!
