Is anyone else interested to see what happens here.

They are going to announce the Oscars nominations around 1.30pm today. If you are interested you can livestream at Oscar.com, Oscars.org,

I am hoping for nominations for Demi Moore and Marianne Jean Baptiste in the best actress categories, and also hoping for a few other surprises.

Brits haven't done too badly. Wallace and Gromit have a nomination; good to see Cynthia Erivo is up for best actress and Felicity Jones is up for best supporting actress. Is Conclave a British film? Very pleased to see that Better Man has a nod for best visual effects (well, it's better than nothing, although I would have liked to see it nominated for best International film/bestdirector). The writer who did the screenplay adaptation for Conclave is also a Brit, I believe.

Does anyone have any thoughts on a trans woman being nominated for best actress? I think I feel a little weird about it because it means that a woman lost a place and women are not that well represented in that industry and have had to fight so hard for good parts. I would have liked to see Marianne Jean Baptiste get a nomination.

Ralph Fiennes is also British.

I thought Marianne Jean-Baptiste was great in Hard Truths, but generally speaking you need your film to be popular to stand a serious chance of getting an Oscar nomination for acting. And her film didn’t catch on (deservedly so - I thought it was Mike Leigh’s worst film). I think this is also why Daniel Craig was snubbed.

I’m looking forward to seeing I’m Still Here, also Anora, when the streaming price goes down. I’m surprised A Real Pain missed in Best Picture.

I have thoughts. It’s a travesty that a man can be nominated in a female category. And will probably win as a backlash to Trump.

Hard Truths I understand was not shown at Cannes nor Venice which cannot have helped.

westisbest1982 · 25/01/2025 09:29

Definitely won’t have helped being rejected from Venice and Cannes, but having seen it I can understand why. Even BAFTA didn’t like it much.

VictoriaSpungecake · 25/01/2025 13:55

Have you all seen most of the nominated films? If so, what are your predictions for the winners in the main categories. I have a few films to catch up on, then I'll come back and give you my predications.

Of the Best Picture list I've seen Wicked, The Substance, Anora and by next weekend I'll have seen The Brutalist and Nickel Boys (which I'm really looking forward to). I'll have more of an idea for predictions then I think.

The only other on the list I'm keen to see is I'm Still Here which I think is out in a couple of weeks? I was hoping Sing Sing would be in it and I'm in two minds about Conclave, but since somebody posted the ending on here a short while back Hmm I suspect I'll wait for it to come on TV.

You couldn't pay me to sit though the rest (each to their own, I know).

i dont have massive issues with this - its very different to the sports/physical advantage arguments
In all honesty, if the awards put policies and safeguards in place for the next few years and worked towards parity of nominations I dont see how acting awards need sex or gender based categories anyway.

Id love to see Meryl Streep beat someone to Best Actor. Am very bored of Best Actress being somehow inferior to Best Actor

colouringindoors · 29/01/2025 21:02

I've seen Dune 2 and happy with the nominations. Ditto Nosferatu. Wild Robot definitely deserves an oscar for animation - absolutely beautiful rendering of the book's pastel sketch style.

I've also seen Maria which I thought was excellent, shame it's not nominated.

Seeing Complete Unknown next week. Will prob try and watch The Brutalist, though bit daunted by Holocaust content - I saw Brody in The Pianist which was outstanding but devastating. Great actor.

colouringindoors · 29/01/2025 21:04

I think Emilia Perez will get far more than it deserves (no, I haven't seen whole film just multiple clips and trailers) as a finger up to Trump - but just highlighting how out of touch that sector of society is to arguably one of the issues that swung it for Trump...

Arran2024 · 29/01/2025 21:06

I have seen Conclave, Complete Unknown and A Real Pain.

Am struggling to see why Complete Unknown is up there for best film. It has been panned by many critics and I agree.

Conclave was great fun. But for me A Real Pain is in a different class. I would love to see it pick up some awards.

westisbest1982 · 29/01/2025 21:34

I've seen A Real Pain, Conclave, A Complete Unknown, Emilia Pérez, The Substance, so not much as yet, but I'm seeing The Brutalist this weekend. Of the five I've seen, A Real Pain stands out and I would have loved to have seen Jesse Eisenberg nominated for Best Actor. Anora is available to rent on Monday, so I'm looking forward to watching that.

burnoutbabe · 01/02/2025 20:04

I have started my best picture watch -I recall a few of us doing it last year.

So far seen

Dune

Today I rented conclave via amazon -I enjoyed that.

Brutalist and unknown man both on at cinema
Perez is on Netflix
Anora unsure
Substance -via Apple or mobi for £5 watch
I'm still here -coming to cinema soon
Nickel boys -Everyman seems to be showing it.
Wicked I'll rent when at parents as mum will enjoy too.

VictoriaSpungecake · 04/02/2025 18:04

Anora - I've seen this. Very good. Fantastic performance by Mikey Madison.
The Brutalist
A Complete Unknown
Conclave Seen it. Good.
Dune: Part Two Won't be watching. Not my cup of tea.
Emilia Pérez
I'm Still Here
Nickel Boys
The Substance Seen it. Loved it.
Wicked Seen it. Enjoyed the first half and then suddenly came to my senses and realised that I'd been drawn in by the amazing sets and choreography, but that I really didn't like it at all, or many of the performances.

So, I've still got to watch 5 films.

Thanks to @burnoutbabe for list of where we can watch these films.

burnoutbabe · 04/02/2025 22:31

Anora now available to rent on Amazon for £3.49. So that will be my next watch.

VictoriaSpungecake · 05/02/2025 10:12

I have decided to rate the films I have seen by giving them star ratings out of 5 stars:

Anora - Very good. Fantastic performance by Mikey Madison but script not as great as it thinks it is. (3.5)
The Brutalist
A Complete Unknown
Conclave Good. (3)
Dune: Part Two Won't be watching. Not my cup of tea.
Emilia Pérez
I'm Still Here
Nickel Boys
The Substance Loved it. Original and bold. (5)
Wicked Enjoyed the first half and then suddenly came to my senses and realised that I'd been drawn in by the amazing sets and choreography, but that I really didn't like it at all, or many of the performances. (2)

I watched Emilia Perez last night. Very strange film. I thought it would be promoting the idea that trans women are women, but this film seems to say that trans women are very much men and can't escape that, even after undergoing surgery. No wonder the trans community is up in arms. Apart from that it was a very unedifying watch, although I admired its bold audacity.

Anora - Very good. Fantastic performance by Mikey Madison but script not as great as it thinks it is. (3.5)
The Brutalist
A Complete Unknown
Conclave Good. (3)
Dune: Part Two Won't be watching. Not my cup of tea.
Emilia Pérez Strange musical with very trite lyrics and unintentional anti trans message. (2)

Best Picture
Anora: enjoyed it but very male gaze with all the sex scenes and sex work is work, etc.
The Brutalist: really want to see it. Will hopefully catch at the cinema.
A Complete Unknown: not seen it yet. Not that fussed as not a Dylan fan but will watch for Chalamet.
Conclave: enjoyed it. Don’t know why it’s getting quite so many plaudits, though.
Dune: Part Two: enjoyed it.
Emilia Pérez: I’m not watching that fucking shit in protest at him being nommed in the actress category.
I'm Still Here: want to see this.
Nickel Boys: very much wanted to like this and thought I would, but the visual style was so offputting. You’ll either love it or hate it.
The Substance; brilliant, my fave film of all those nominated but it won’t win. I really hope Demi gets best actress and isn’t gazumped by a bloke.
Wicked: I’d rather stick pins in my ears.

Not nominated for best picture but I think it should have been is A Real Pain which was really, really great. Hope Culkin gets the supporting actor award.

And one of the nominations for International feature that I’ve seen is The Girl with the Needle. Harrowing und unrelenting misery but a really great film. Do see it if you can handle the subject matter because it’s just excellent,

Yeah look how well going 'gender neutral' worked at the Brits!! Another medicore bloke stealing awards and recognition from talented women...

GRCP · 07/02/2025 20:38

I loved Wicked and want AG to win BSA. But The Substance was something else - brilliant and really stayed with me.

There's a really great podcast called the rest is entertainment and I was shocked about the Oscar campaign one, shocked! The money, the PR, the 'gifts' the backstabbing!
