Is anyone else interested to see what happens here.

They are going to announce the Oscars nominations around 1.30pm today. If you are interested you can livestream at Oscar.com, Oscars.org,

I am hoping for nominations for Demi Moore and Marianne Jean Baptiste in the best actress categories, and also hoping for a few other surprises.

I couldn't agree more about Nickel Boys @ConstantlyFuriosa ; I really wanted to love it and I thought the performances were fantastic but I just couldn't get on with the POV stuff. It's an amazing film IMO, but I found the style just too jarring and distracting.

I think it just made me think of found footage films and I don't like found footage films (bar Cloverfield, obvs 😀).

There's a really great podcast called the rest is entertainment and I was shocked about the Oscar campaign one, shocked! The money, the PR, the 'gifts' the backstabbing!

Yes! I only realised what went on after the scandal around Andrea Riseborough's nomination.

Many years ago I saw a film called The Oscar, which was about all the dirty tricks employed by an actor to ensure that he wins the Academy Award.

Has anyone heard about the scandal Karla Sofía Gascón from Emilia Pérez?

https://gomag.com/article/a-quick-look-at-trans-actress-karla-sofia-gascons-self-inflicted-fall-from-grace/

it was the joint front runner with The Brutalist to win Best Picture before all this happened.

Watched Anora via Amazon prime which I liked and glad dad and I watched in different houses!

Though I found the sex far less cringy than poor things last year when I felt so awkward watching Emma stone do all that stuff.

So 3.5/5. 3 down, 7 to go!

colouringindoors · 07/02/2025 23:02

Well I thought Timothy Chalamet in A Complete Unknown was pretty amazing. Don't know a huge amount about Dylan but for me this was a great snapshot of those early years and music. Enjoyed it a lot more than I expected!

Hoping to see The Brutalist at the weekend 😊

SocksAndTheCity · 07/02/2025 23:18

I have a ticket for The Seed of the Sacred Fig next weekend which I'm really looking forward to having seen the trailer a few times, but it's another almost three hour marathon and at 11 in the morning so I'll be needing extra coffee.

Apparently the director and crew were arrested and some had to flee Iran to avoid prison and flogging; the film (which was made in secret) was smuggled out and edited in Germany which is why it's the German entry for Best International Film. That aside, it looks very good indeed.

Hi Everyone,

When you've seen all the films - or as many as you are able - it would be great if you could give each film you see a star rating out of 5. I will then collate as many of the scores as I can and the film with the most stars will be our vote for the winner of the Academy Award for best film. Shame I won't be able to pass it on to the Academy, but it might be fun. Below is a template for how I've been rating films which you can copy, paste and edit your scores onto if you wish.

Anora - Very good. Fantastic performance by Mikey Madison but script not as great as it thinks it is. (3.5)
The Brutalist
A Complete Unknown
Conclave Good. (3)
Dune: Part Two Won't be watching. Not my cup of tea.
Emilia Pérez
I'm Still Here
Nickel Boys
The Substance Loved it. Original and bold. (5)
Wicked Enjoyed the first half and then suddenly came to my senses and realised that I'd been drawn in by the amazing sets and choreography, but that I really didn't like it at all, or many of the performances. (2)

Anora - (where can I watch this?)
The Brutalist (seeing this week)
A Complete Unknown - Enjoyed far more than I expected. Convincing 60s vibe, Chalamet impressived with Dylan music, voice and posture. 4
Conclave
Dune: Part Two - Visually stunning, sound too. Interesting story drawing from world religions. Worm ride amazing (effects). 4
Emilia Pérez - not watching on principle
I'm Still Here
Nickel Boys
The Substance
Wicked - Not my cup.of tea. Found trailer too fake.
A Real pain - (seeing tomorrow)
Nosferatu - visually amazing, attention to detail in gothic atmosphere. Slow, but well researched - lots inc re Nosferatu folklore so not simply a Dracula story. 3.5
Wild Robot - Just so so beautiful animation of book' pastel sketch drawing style Animation: 5.
Maria - visually stunning, opposite to Nosferatu. Jolie excellent 4.

Anora is on Prime but at a cost. £4.99 to rent

SocksAndTheCity · 09/02/2025 12:56

My ratings:

Anora: 4/5 - I liked the performances and the portrayal of the strip club (the mundanity of everyday working there was very well done, probably because actual workers were involved), but it was overlong and dragged in the middle

The Brutalist: 4.5/5 - really enjoyed it and thought it was beautifully made (would love to see it win against the films made for ten times it's budget) but less than keen on the end and not enough architecture

A Complete Unknown: no interest, won't be seeing

Conclave: would have liked to see it, but it was never that high on my list, and since some muppet posted the ending on here will be waiting for it to come on TV

Dune 2: no interest, won't be seeing

Emilia Perez: won't be watching, for the same reasons as others and also because it doesn't look very good

I'm Still Here: Planning to see as soon as it's available (a week on Friday, I think?)

Nickel Boys: 3.5/5 - loved the story, writing and performances, but the POV was too distracting and spoiled the film for me

Nosferatu: was looking forward to this but the trailer put me off, and nothing I've seen or read since has changed my mind and made me want to see it. I'll stick with the original

The Substance: 5/5 - my favourite film of last year and praying Demi Moore gets the Oscar

Wicked: 4.5/5 - thoroughly enjoyed it despite not having seen the stage show or knowing any of the songs

A Real Pain: 4/5 - enjoyed the story and very much appreciated the 90 minute running time, but it didn't stay with me for long

The Seed of the Sacred Fig: seeing next weekend (and would appreciate knowing if the thread somebody's started about it below has spoilers, since the title doesn't mention them and I'd like to not have another one ruined)

The Wild Robot: seeing Wednesday (I think)

colouringindoors · 09/02/2025 13:08

Thanks @mum2jakie think I might splash out - looks interesting...

Best Picture
Anora: enjoyed it but very male gaze with all the sex scenes and sex work is work, etc.
The Brutalist: really want to see it. Will hopefully catch at the cinema.
A Complete Unknown: not seen it yet. Not that fussed as not a Dylan fan but will watch for Chalamet.
Conclave: enjoyed it. Don’t know why it’s getting quite so many plaudits, though.
Dune: Part Two: enjoyed it.
Emilia Pérez: I’m not watching that fucking shit in protest at him being nommed in the actress category.
I'm Still Here: want to see this.
Nickel Boys: very much wanted to like this and thought I would, but the visual style was so offputting. You’ll either love it or hate it.
The Substance; brilliant, my fave film of all those nominated but it won’t win. I really hope Demi gets best actress and isn’t gazumped by a bloke.
Wicked: I’d rather stick pins in my ears.

Not nominated for best picture but I think it should have been is A Real Pain which was really, really great. Hope Culkin gets the supporting actor award.

And one of the nominations for International feature that I’ve seen is The Girl with the Needle. Harrowing und unrelenting misery but a really great film. Do see it if you can handle the subject matter because it’s just excellent,

Would you be interested in adding marks out of 5 stars to each of the films you've seen so far? No problems if you don't want to.

I found it dragged. Not a huge Dylan fan - maybe it would have helped if I liked the music.

MrsPeterHarris · 09/02/2025 21:05

Dragged is a good description @Arran2024

Saw September 5 tonight - thought it was Oscar worthy although can't describe it as a great film given the true reality of how the events unfolded. Worth a watch as a piece of history though. 3/5

burnoutbabe · 09/02/2025 21:43

Still only 3 seen.

But will try and see brutalist tomorrow.

Have a free 30 day trial for mubi so can de substance that way.

Nickel boys proving hardest to see.

ARainyNightInSoho · 09/02/2025 22:03

I have seen The Brutalist, A Real Pain, A Complete Unknown and Betterman. Betterman is the best of them all. It’s completely original and visually stunning in parts. I can’t help thinking that it has been overlooked because Robbie Williams is hardly known in the US and people are snobby about him elsewhere. Bob Dylan is the middle class, male, boomer favourite for people who like to think they might have been poets themselves and so a film about him is bound to get the chattering classes excited. Timothy Chalamet’s performance is impressive but the film as a whole is a bog standard biopic like any other. Some people just love the look of 1960s California, imagining themselves as hippies as if the coolness will rub off on them. A gobby working class pop star from Stoke on Trent doesn’t appeal to the kind of people who influence film culture. It’s a shame as the film is genuinely creative.

MrsPeterHarris · 09/02/2025 23:29

Completely agree @ARainyNightInSoho Better Man is superb & definitely Oscar worthy.

VictoriaSpungecake · 10/02/2025 11:43

Yes, it was disappointing that Better Man wasn't recognised at the Oscars. The BAFTAS should definitely have given it a nomination.

colouringindoors · 12/02/2025 19:00

Agreed Better Man was excellent. Original, insightful into both the music industry and Robbie's demons, plus enormously entertaining!

MayfairRose · 13/02/2025 06:30

I didn't think Dune 2 would be my cuppa but it was fantastic. Not a fan of Chalamet but he can act. Dune 2 was very engrossing 5/5

I feel I need to watch Dune 2 now as every single person to mention it has rated it quite highly. I have added your vote to the running score.
