There are no good Tom Cruise films.

The Faculty was an amazing movie 😁

Rainman was excellent

Hate the greatest Showman
Lion King remake was a waste of time

Houselamp · 19/04/2024 06:05

All star casts are awful. When a film has too many famous people in it its hard to get immersed in the story. It's just like watching a group of people at work doing their acting jobs rather than seeing them as characters. I much prefer a film full of unknowns or at least people who haven't been in much.
Same as when they do a lot of promo stuff and talk about funny things from behind the scenes. I don't want to know about behind the scenes because then I think about it when I'm watching The Scenes and it ruins it a bit.

Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio are completely miscast in Titanic. She looks all buxom and matronly and he seems like a little boy. I never bought in to the chemistry between them.

Agree with this.
I am not a massive fan of Winona Ryder movies, but she would have been better suited.
Or Bridget Fonda/Juliette Lewis/Demi Moore?
Kate was a terrible choice of casting.
So much so that it was only recently I discovered her character was American, not English! 😂

BeethovenNinth · 19/04/2024 06:32

Lord of the Rings - boring

any film that wins a major Oscar is usually dull as fuck

tarantino films are pointless and noisy and for moronic guffawing males

Luckydog7 · 19/04/2024 06:33

Both avatar films were shite, the whole world went crazy over them, the hype was nuts and I was just left scratching my head. Toy story does animated films much better.

There was a horrible shark film on Amazon. So bad it was glorious. The shark was a cardboard cutout and you could the person waving it about and they kept reusing the same sea footage.

Oooh want to see that !😁😁

US filmmakers wrote the winners' version of history with all of those Vietnam-war films (I know the Vietnamese won but it was a Pyrrhic victory). Those films successfully propagandised us into thinking of invading soldiers as poor little innocent victims, and led otherwise reasonable people to use the word "Vietnam" to mean a traumatic experience for young western men rather than an actual country full of real people who were used as a weapons lab.

I had a sense of this as a teen when I went to see Platoon in the cinema although I couldn’t articulate it as well as you have. I felt really uncomfortable watching it.

NoraLuka · 19/04/2024 06:50

Any film with singing is shite. That includes Disney, Grease, Mary Poppins, whatever. If anyone stops what they’re doing at any point and bursts into song that makes the whole thing unwatchable.

They shouldn’t make sequels. Just because a film is good doesn’t mean you have to make another 2 or 3 (or more) of the same thing. I like Studio Ghibli because they never have sequels, and they don’t sing!

TeamPolin · 19/04/2024 06:53

Wes Anderson films are tedious rubbish, the cinematic equivalent of a hipster haircut. Yes, including The Royal Tennenbaums.

This with bells on

TeamPolin · 19/04/2024 06:54

Also, The Matrix is shite....

Yes. It’s a version of the ‘the rest of the world is a foreign theme park Americans go/get sent to find themselves’ trope. Sometimes that’s trauma, as in Vietnam, or pleasure, as in Eat, Pray Love (where the parts of the world that feature as Not America might as well be renamed Pasta, Yoga and Shagging A Local. But you’re right — either way it’s just scenery to Americans Experiencing Stuff.

The Sixth Sense is shit, and the "twist" isn't amazing and clever, it's stupid.

I agree!! I wondered if anyone would mention this. I got it within the first few minutes, then everything else confirmed it from that point. And I NEVER figure out the twist (or most of the time the actual plot to be fair) in anything Grin

Porageeater · 19/04/2024 06:58

I agree with most of these especially the tedious nature of the Godfather, Lord of the Rings and Wes Craven. I don’t think anyone has mentioned Star Wars yet either.

I did enjoy 2001: A Space Odyssey but I was probably stoned when I watched it (many years ago).

Badbadbunny · 19/04/2024 06:59

Xanadu was actually pretty good for a musical and didn’t deserve being trashed by the professional critics. At least 40 years later it’s become a bit of a cult film and has gained popularity. After all the music topped the charts at the time.

Porageeater · 19/04/2024 07:01

*Wes Anderson not Craven. A very different director although can’t say I’m a huge fan of him either

LittleMissSleepyUK · 19/04/2024 07:01

The Greatest Showman is a pile of poo

Badbadbunny · 19/04/2024 07:03

Mamma Mia (both) were total crap filled with “stars” who were either past it or couldn’t sing and/or dance. Only cast because they were famous rather than ability. Would have been so much better with proper skilled actors, singers and dancers.

Zonder · 19/04/2024 07:03

There are no good Tom Cruise films.
I came on specifically to say this (although the pp who mentioned Rainman had a point). And he is absolutely NOT good looking.

Junibug · 19/04/2024 07:03

Oppenheimer was barely watchable.

All the Marvel films are utter shite. Stop churning them out! So tedious.

I'm very excited for Paddington 3....

I was about to quote you to point out all the actresses you'd listed were American. Had no idea Rose was supposed to be American and I only saw her in it last week! Although I turned it off shortly after they arrived at the boat as only wanted to show DS the wreck footage at the beginning.

onawave · 19/04/2024 07:20

Shit shark films are amazing.
Avatar was overhyped shite.
Twister is one of the best films ever made.
Grease 2 is far superior to Grease.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 19/04/2024 07:24

Bewareofthisonetoo · 19/04/2024 06:35

Oooh want to see that !😁😁

I actually looked it up last night.

It's called Land Shark and it's the worst film ever made and the unintentionally funniest, probably. After Snakes on a Plane, which is, of course, a colossus in the genre.

CupOfTeaNoSugar · 19/04/2024 07:28

Any film that is a musical - it just wrecks the film & makes me cringe.
