I braved the weather had downpours, sideways rain and wind gusts that nearly made me stop but I strangely enjoyed my longest run ever, as I ignored pace completely listened to a podcast and got 14 slow miles done. But I’m even more terrified that my body won’t cope with a marathon.. will just keep adding miles and hope! Alas my niggly hip was really starting to play up on the last mile today so I’m currently sat with a bag of frozen peas on my groin. Anyone else bonkers enough to venture out today.

TriSkiRun99 · 13/01/2020 12:21

184.1 total Smile

Morning all - I'm in the market for some new road shoes - does anyone have any experience of On Running? It's not a brand I'd heard of until recently but I tried some yesterday and really liked them.

IRun4Me · 13/01/2020 13:31

Day 12 and 13 of RED January done. Been busy so been a bit hard to fit in. Also the wind is not helpful in motivating me to get out.
TriSkiRun I have a niggly hip as well. When I was marathon training as I increased the distance it would play up but then settled as I got used to that distance. The last couple of miles of the actual marathon were very painful but I don’t regret doing it one bit. I also swear by Epsom Salt baths.
Waiting Not a brand I’ve heard of either. I’m a total Brooks fan

@WaitingforToto I tried some ONs when there was all the fuss about them last year, and liked them, but didn't buy them on the spot due to the price. I'm really glad I didn't- people from my running club bought them, and all found they fell apart quickly. Not good quality for the price.

I love Brooks, and Nike Pegasus. Adidas Boost for racing.

PaddingtonPaddington · 13/01/2020 21:22

Brooks fan here too, both road and trail.

Day 13 of RED Jan was fun in storm Brendan. I’m struggling slightly with Achilles niggles.

Strandliv · 14/01/2020 06:49

I have Brooks, mainly because they’re light and I can barely tell I’m wearing anything but I think I might want to try something a bit more cushioning and bouncy. I might try Asics.
Never been trail running. Because I’m a solo runner I’ve always been a bit nervous about trail running.

Strandliv · 14/01/2020 06:51

BTW so impressed with you RED Jan runners, the weather here has been awful, the thought of running in it everyday, wow.

WaitingforToto · 14/01/2020 11:24

Thanks for a reviews everyone, Brooks seems like a popular choice. I've run in Asisc (Gel Kayano's) for a long time but they keep tweaking the fit and I find them really uncomfortable now, and heavy. I think I need something more neutral and lightweight so I'll do some shopping around. Thanks again Smile

TriSkiRun99 · 14/01/2020 13:31

I’m surprised how ok my legs are today after my long run yesterday. I was expecting to be feeling it much more but I’ve done two sets of “kettle is boiling squats & lunges” this morning and although abit weary are feeling ok Smile anyone else do “kettle boiling” exercises? I’m waiting to make a cuppaT so pop in 10squats as it’s the only way I can be bothered to do them as don’t like doing the strength stuff but know I really need to...plus added incentive of ski hols booked in March so I know I’ll thank myself then for doing them!

TriSkiRun99 · 14/01/2020 13:34

My DH didn’t get on with Brooks found the quality poorer as both his pairs the toes just went through. Yet his Asics keep going. I wear New Balance as I like wide cushioned fit but have also got some new saucony everrun shoes I'm trying out as wide fit & cushioned but lower profile.

IRun4Me · 14/01/2020 19:57

Another run in the wind. Luckily the first part was in to it but coming back it was behind me

Another run in the wind today too, seemed to be gusty in most directions.

Early morning run for me; out at 6 in the dark. Was a bit breezy & cold but felt good. My friend in Hong Kong runs at 5:30 every morning, but it’s 15 degrees there so a bit more pleasant!
My trail shoes are Innov8 x claws; planning a pair of roclites later this year. They are a nice wide fit & very comfy.

Definitely got the mid January slump. Everywhere is so grey, wet and muddy. I’m really limited on my routes at the moment. Even had to persuade the dog from the sofa.
But at least there was no wind and I’ve hit the 50 mile mark for the month.

Well done for getting out there Irunforme I bailed tonight as it started raining and was cold n dark so went swimming instead. Hope to run Tom before work instead when it will still be dark I expect!

PaddingtonPaddington · 15/01/2020 21:21

Intervals session tonight. Good to run without being battered by the wind.

Half way ish with RED jan.

214.5 (I’ve adjusted the total as 100 miles seems to have been added in accidentally)

emummy · 16/01/2020 09:10

Good steady run this morning before work.

230.5

TriSkiRun99 · 16/01/2020 16:49

I squeezed a sun rise 3m in this morning still flipping windy but I just managed to miss the heavy rain that came back half hour later!

PaddingtonPaddington · 16/01/2020 17:43

Back in the wind tunnel for a quick lunchtime run today. Over half way with RED Jan.

IRun4Me · 16/01/2020 19:15

I seem to be getting worse at the moment! Another morning run for me and I struggled, I hoped it would get easier. Never mind, I'll keep at it!

245.5

TriSkiRun99 · 17/01/2020 13:19

What are you struggling with toto? If it’s stamina then you may need to run slower, if it’s speed then intervals (which are horrid) may help, or hill sessions (run up / down a hil 5x type thing). If it’s getting from 5k to 10k there’s apps that help to guide you. The C25K+ NHS ones have a speed and stamina versions. They play pacey music or give you sprint intervals. I can run longer distances but the flipping intervals one has me puffing n red by no5. Grin

TriSkiRun99 · 17/01/2020 13:20

Meant to say some runs are just harder than others. I always without fail find the bit from 2-3k the hardest and it’s a fight between mind and body to motivate me to keep going!

PaddingtonPaddington · 17/01/2020 18:56

@WaitingforToto don’t be too hard on yourself. Some runs I can feel like a hard slog and then another flying along.

Windy sunset run for me today trying to get home before it got pitch black!
