Do any of you have any podcast/radio 4 comedies to recommend? I'm quite new to the podcast thing but like the QI one "No such thing as a Fish" so any recommendations along those lines welcome Smile

emummy · 03/07/2015 10:46

Progression run this morning, hotter than expected so got very pink! Thank God for cold showers!
The only radio4 comedy podcast I have is the news quiz, but it's not very long. Otherwise I listen to women's hour, which handily keeps going into the next episode without stopping, and Start the Week.

suzannecanthecan · 03/07/2015 13:14

comedy I like Richard Herring and Frank SKinner, I tend to browse itunes regularly looking for new ones, there really is something for every taste and interest!

suzannecanthecan · 03/07/2015 13:15

podcast thread here may be worth a read:

11.57 from me today

=126.07

not as hot and rather windier than I anticipated!

AnnPerkins · 03/07/2015 14:23

3.5 miles from me last night.

129.12

I'm going to have to spend some time working my iPhone out. I get in a right pickle, trying to set MapMyRun and iplayer when I start, without accidentally pausing MMR with my bottom after about 10 metres Angry And then trying to stop MMR quickly when I finish. And when the News Quiz finishes I have to run in silence because I can't handle the faff of putting something else on Angry I'm clearly doing it all wrong.

suzannecanthecan · 03/07/2015 14:32

is it possible to make a play list of pod casts Ann?

I use an ipod shuffle, usually clip to the waist band of my shorts so it's just a matter of finding the teeny little button to press which makes it go through a spoken menu of whats stored on there

Blatherskite · 03/07/2015 14:35

I managed 86 miles last month but have so far done none this month!

Looking forward to parkrun tomorrow

Anglaise1 · 03/07/2015 15:07

If you have a series of the same podcast they play consecutively. Not sure if you can get them to shuffle, I can't with my iphone.
I've tried looking for Monday night comedy podcasts as I love Just a MInute but can't find it! Apart from the podcasts already listed I don't know of any others. I like Kermode and Mayo's film review from 5 live but it isn't really comedy as such. There are a lot of comedy standup acts on Audiobooks, but they aren't free of course.

A play list, that's what I need. Thanks suzanne.

I can see where I've been going wrong. I've been using the BBC iplayer app, which just plays one show at a time. I've just found the podcasts page and am having a peruse.

suzannecanthecan · 03/07/2015 17:40

can you use an itunes app?
that way you'd have access to all the podcasts which can be downloaded via itunes.

(I don't have an iphone so I may not be the best guide!)

cinnamongreyhound · 03/07/2015 21:48

Wow! Can't believe I've been posting that long OhOneOhTwoOhThree! Lovely reading my first post Smile

Anglaise1 · 04/07/2015 07:52

8.7 hot sweaty miles from last night. Thunderstorm here early in the morning so hopefully it will be a bit cooler here today. Still can't decide whether or not to do race tomorrow (27.2kms trail), racing on consecutive weekends, similar distances, and in this heat is something I don't like very much. Plus I know I'll have terrible stomach problems afterwards which will effectively write off the rest of Sunday Confused.
137.82

OP posts:
suzannecanthecan · 04/07/2015 08:55

That's a tricky one Anglaise, I've found that running in the heat leaves me disproportionately wiped out the next day and that's running at a slowish easy pace so I'd be worried about the impact on my health / immune system if I had to push myself.

Wrt stomach problems do you find that the likelihood or severity increases in line with the length of the run?

If so could it be related to the length of time that the gut is 'shut down' (because with high intensity exercise most of the blood supply is needed for the working muscles and so is diverted away from the viscera) ?

familygermsareok · 04/07/2015 11:00

Difficult one Anglaise. Is there one you would prefer or both pretty much equal? Makes it hard knowing that the rest of the day will be written off too. Maybe see what the weather is like tomorrow morning before final decision (but I'm guessing you really want to run them both!)

OhOne that is really interesting seeing the beginnings of the thread, thanks for the link Smile

5.64 from me and DS1 this morning under grey skies with a cool breeze. Got home just before the rain started.
137.82 + 5.64 = 143.46

HalleLouja · 04/07/2015 11:21

8.1 miles to add from this week so far 151.58. An ok parkrun today. Not the fastest ever but it was hot and my first mile was speedy.

Anglaise1 · 04/07/2015 14:55

Suzanne the pain arrives at around 18kms, but only during races when I force a little harder and am going more quickly. Road races are worse because of the added shock impact. Last week's trail race was 23kms and it wasn't as bad as the pain after a half marathon because my speed was a little lower. Heat isn't a factor as it is just as bad in the winter when it is cold! I'm seeing the sports specialist on Wednesday so can ask her advice but I really think I'm stuck with it. I can handle it once a month but not every week!
Thanks Family - I did a race last week, wanted to do the one tomorrow but have decided not to do it. A few guys from the club are doing a valley run tomorrow, lots of hills so I can have a long outing there, but without the speed. Although I could probably have a podium tomorrow as there aren't many women running, but it isn't worth it to lose all of Sunday afternoon. I'll be able to take the kids to the beach instead of lying on the bed with a sore tummy all afternoon!

familygermsareok · 04/07/2015 18:55

Ah, I understand now Anglaise, I had forgotten you already raced last weekend. At least you got a podium then. And the valley run sounds lovely, as does the family beach trip.
It does sound like reduced blood flow to the gut, as suzanne mentioned. There are quite a few online articles on it, I guess you have probably looked it up yourself but I can try and do a link if not. I hope your sports specialist can give some useful advice, it sounds really miserable Flowers

suzannecanthecan · 04/07/2015 19:02

I've also read speculation that josling or jiggling (not sure what the best scientific term would be lol) of the viscera may be the culprit....perhaps it's a combination of the two.

I know when I first started running I upped my mileage quite soon and my digestive system seemed a bit 'shocked' after the first couple of longer runs, I found it hard to eat my normal amounts of food.
Then it seemed to settle down and I was able to carry on stuffing my face as normal.
Mind you I can only ever run on an empty stomach, if I've eaten it feels like digestion takes up all my energy.

MadMonkeys · 04/07/2015 20:43

151.58+3=154.58

A bit warm for me so a slow 3 miles for me yesterday.

standingonlego · 04/07/2015 22:55

Adding on parkrun taking us to

157.78

BobblesAndClips · 04/07/2015 23:19

Adding my parkrun too. It felt hard from the start today, I was over a minute off my PB. I so want to be faster. Although I think that 10 minute miles are perfectly respectable, I'd love to get closer to 9. Is it possible? I can get close to 9.5 minute miles (average speed over a hilly 5k) when I push myself but there's no way I can go any faster. Should I be doing proper interval training or hill training? I'm crap on hills Sad

160.88

cinnamongreyhound · 05/07/2015 08:50

My experience is that interval training and extending your distance has a bit impact on pace at 5k BobblesandClips.

Need to add my lovely sociable and slow parkrun from yesterday Smile 163.98

BobblesAndClips · 05/07/2015 09:53

Sorry if my last post was a bit negative! I enjoyed my parkrun, got to chat with someone I knew slightly and it was really nice.

Am going to read about intervals and have a go this week. Thanks cinnamon

Purpletoes · 05/07/2015 10:15

Hi adding a wet and slow 4.4 from this morning.

This week my plan is to do the core session at the running club and park run and another session. Hoping to get to Tuesday's club run at club as its a mob match but oh may have tennis.

I enjoyed my run through the rain today and managed 7km which is the longest I have done in a while!

I
