Lurker place marking!!

Still 2 months till due date (14th August) so a while before I put my trainers on Sad

DH and a lot of others from the running club did liverpool rock and roll half and full marathon this weekend. I was a bit mardy at one point but DH has booked it for next year for us both - no thought to baby sitter though!!

FrankUnderwoodsWife · 17/06/2015 07:06

I started 0-5km yesterday for probably the 5th time in a year!
I find running really hard. I can literally only run for a minute. Run out of breath and feel like I physically have to stop.
Carrying an extra 2.5 stone that I hope to lose before my 40th next January.
Can anyone give me some tips and techniques to make running easier?
I'm trying to keep my head up and look forward. Anything else I need to know?
Thanks in advance!

AggressiveBunting · 17/06/2015 07:35

Total is 697.81 (nothing to add, just bringing it over). I've stopped running to and from Crossfit. It's just too damn hot. On that note, they've changed the class schedule which really buggers up my running training and means that when DS starts school in September I'll have to be up at 4.30 on both Monday and Tuesday. Gah.

AggressiveBunting · 17/06/2015 07:40

Sorry, forgot to welcome Frank to the thread.

re tips, if you're getting out of breath, you're pacing too fast, so try to take it down a bit, even if that means you're barely breaking into a run. Always prioritise distance over speed. The important thing is to build up the amount of time that you're in motion.

Neeko · 17/06/2015 07:52

Just marking my place. Should have been adding miles but forgot to set my alarm this morning. Oops!

FrankUnderwoodsWife · 17/06/2015 08:43

Thanks Aggressive, I feel like I'm barely running as it is.....
Will try and slow down for my run later.
I've never enjoyed running and haven't exercised in yonks, so starting from a very low base.
My aim is to run 5km without stopping. Today that feels as daunting as climbing Everest.

Anglaise1 · 17/06/2015 10:02

Frank welcome to the Runners thread and good luck with your 0-5k, I hope you stick with it this time. For your breathing, try and breath deeply and slowly, don't pant like a dog, it will tire you out too quickly and isn't an efficient way of getting oxygen around your body. Run a little thenwalk to recuperate, you will get there and it will help you in your goal to lose weight...and it will be a lot easier to run when you have lost the 2.5 stone.
Good luck Flowers

Was 702.81 with HalleLouja's miles.

Hi FrankUnderwoodsWife!

Getting close now karatekimmi, you'll be back before you know it Flowers

stilllearnin · 17/06/2015 10:49

frank are you using a couch to 5k program. I really recommend it and I think a couple of us started that way. It builds you up in manageable stages and there's good support on mn too - but keep posting here to add to our totals!! I would not have got far without a program to follow. Good advice about breathing and slowing down. Also a good sports bra and if you legs hips or feet hurt you may want to make sure your footwear is ok. The key thing is to do it regularly 3 times a week is good, 2 is a minimum. I have found that getting out regularly is the only way I can progress

AnnPerkins · 17/06/2015 11:36

Hi everyone. Sorry to hear about all the injuries, emummy, phlebas, lastqueen and holmes. I hope you all recover quickly.

Welcome Frank. It will start getting easier for you, just don't do too much too soon. Hopefully you will soon start enjoying it.

I went out last night after having the weekend off running. Did some cycling and a HIIT instead. Even in my old shoes I'm getting various pains in my shins and ankles. DH thinks it's just general old lady aches and pains (he gets lots of old man pains from karate) but I'm still anxious about another injury putting me out of action so want to catch anything early.

Incidentally, I got a reply from Up & Running. They said to go back to the shop and work with the staff to find the right shoes. If the ones I bought are in a saleable condition they will take them back. Not sure they would be saleable after four miles but I understand the shop's position. I want a pain free run in my old shoes before I try my new shoes again which may be a while.

Wishing everyone injury-free (and wasp sting free - ouch! Agressive Shock) running.

706.81

Deliaskis · 17/06/2015 11:46

3.2 from me last night, so 710.01 is the new total.

Looking for advice from more seasoned runners actually. My running shoes I am happy with and not looking to change, until I googled how long you should keep a pair of shoes for, and found people suggesting around 500 miles. Now I have had my shoes around 15 months and am averaging about 3 x 3 mile runs a week, so would be approaching that mark soon. I was hoping to not need new shoes for at least this summer/autumn, and was honestly assuming I would be more likely to get another year out of them.

So, do people really change their shoes at around 500 miles? Or can I just wait until they start feeling uncomfortable? Or does that make it more likely that I will get injured? As I said, I'm only doing tiny distances really, so was really surprised to read the 500 mile thing.

Thanks in advance.
Dx

PoppyShakespeare · 17/06/2015 13:23

714.01 with 4 from me

the fabric upper of mine seems to disintegrate before 500 miles but the soles barely look used, except the toes, so it's a bit galling

but I like having lots of running shoes anyway so any excuse!

cinnamongreyhound · 17/06/2015 16:36

I do Deliaskis, many people in my club stick with those rules and advised I do the same. I do wonder how much is propaganda from show companies but like PoppyShakespere I'm happy to have new shoes and usually have a pair for my birthday or Christmas Grin

Anglaise1 · 17/06/2015 17:14

6.5kms from me today. Deliaskis I'm like Poppy and *Cinnamon, new shoes are always welcome gifts. I have a few pairs on the go at the same time, the newest for racing in and the others for training (it is always good to have a spare dry pair when one pair get really wet/muddy). I don't log my mileage but just keep them until they stop feeling comfortable or fall apart (usually the latter first!)

Hi Frank, welcome to the thread. Lots of good advice from others. Run/walk is a good way to start, gradually the running time increases and the walking time decreases. And to reiterate, if you are out of breath then slow down, no matter how slow, and make sure you get out regularly, at least 2 or 3 times a week. It does take time but we all started somewhere. I couldn't run 100 metres when I started and thought I would never in a million years manage to run for 5 mins and I love it now Smile

Re shoes I do feel when mine need changed. My shins get a bit achy and my Achilles (which is never great) flares up more. I sometimes wonder if it is psychological but it does seem to happen about the same usage distance and my pains disappear on getting new shoes. I don't even make it up to the 500 miles though, closer to 450 for me, so I keep the older shoes for shorter runs which works fine. The fabric top is usually full of holes by then anyway.

BobblesAndClips · 17/06/2015 21:38

Oooh new thread!

No miles to add but should be going out tomorrow night.

Am now thinking I need new shoes after reading this... no idea how many miles they have done but they are certainly old and not very bouncy any more!

Neeko · 18/06/2015 07:42

Morning!
Welcome Frank. I echo others about using 0-5k. It really helped me. Good luck.

Delia- I read somewhere that the gel cushioning inside trainers breaks down over time. Don't know if that's true or not. I run similar amounts to you and think round about the eighteen month mark will be about right. My last trainers still looked ok but weren't as cushioned on impact. I still use them for walking as there isn't as much impact and they are better for my feet than Converse etc.

A slow but steady 3.6 from me today.

Beautiful morning here! Lovely run with my friend and our doggies, ds3 woke up at 6.30 so dh had half an hour keeping him happy until his breakfast returned!

emummy · 18/06/2015 11:24

Foot much better, now have sore throat and a cold! Managed to get out though, took it easy, pleasant run in the woods.

AggressiveBunting · 18/06/2015 11:52

Easyish 5 miler on the treadmill with Stevie Nicks to make 736.1

Going for a hardcore hilly out and back with my racing snake friend tomorrow. 1,700 stairs out, 2,000 back, and that's just the uphill ones. Am very afraid.

Neeko · 18/06/2015 21:22

That's a lot of stairs! Good luck.

runtothehills · 18/06/2015 21:37

5 mile hill race tonight, lots of midges at start/finish so covered in little red dots. Happy with result, managed to overtake 8 people on downhill which was great fun (very rocky/steep). ITB behaved, so now take it easy, couple of easy runs between now and next Sunday.

Aggressive by stairs do actually mean proper steps? Can imagine it can be draining but at least you can get a rhythm.

Re trainers, I'm eyeing up a pair of Inov8 Mudclaws, look great for technical terrain which I really enjoy. Have placed on my birthday list unsubtle hints to DH Agree that uppers die before soles do!

Welcome Frank

Hope you get well soon emummy have you made a desicion on the Ballater 10 miler?

741.1

BobblesAndClips · 18/06/2015 21:42

4.7 from me tonight, my planned 4 miler turned out to be longer than I thought!

Deliaskis · 18/06/2015 22:12

Thanks for thoughts and advice on shoes folks, interesting and much appreciated. I think I'll certainly try and keep them for another few months or so, but maybe look to change in autumn some time.
