Fun fact - every world champion of the last 10 years entered the TdF this year. Virtual prize for anyone who can name them without the use of a search engine.

And we wave goodbye to:
DNF Tony Martin (Ger) Jumbo-Visma
OTL Luke Rowe (GBr) Ineos Grenadiers
DNF Miles Scotson (Aus) Groupama-FDJ
DNF Daniel McLay (GBr) Team Arkea-Samsic
DNF Clément Russo (Fra) Team Arkea-Samsic
DNF Tiesj Benoot (Bel) Team DSM
DNF Tosh Van Der Sande (Bel) Lotto Soudal
DNF Victor Campenaerts (Bel) Qhubeka-NextHash

Sagan (x3)
Pedersen
Valverde
Alaphilippe
Cavendish

I know I'm missing three.

Just loved Cav's gesture at the Tom Simpson memorial today - helmet off, green cap on the steps, bow of the head. Pure class, and so respectful.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 07/07/2021 19:45

I got the above plus one more, missed 2. Was a bit confused as trying to think of 10 people forgot Sagan had won it more than once.

iNeverFinishAnyth · 07/07/2021 19:47

Kwiatkowski- just came to me as I'm watching today's stage (ok, I saw the sleeve bands)

Pan2 · 07/07/2021 22:47

Tony Martin was TT world champ if that counts??

FelicityLemon · 08/07/2021 06:16

@Pan2 @iNeverFinishAnyth @EndoplasmicReticulum

Sorry Pan that doesn't count.
The rest are right, I also forgot Sagan had three wins I had him down for two then couldn't think of anyone else.

But no love for Belgium and Portugal? GrinBike

Ok, I gave in and googled. Belgium I should have known, Portugal I wouldn't have got.
Yesterday's stage was fantastic, Van Aert second in the sprint the day before, then winning the Ventoux stage, I think that's what I'd call an all-rounder. These mountains are seriously hard riding, and the pros make them look easy (ish!) Many years ago, I rode up the Ventoux, and managed something like 4 to 5mph in parts. Unbelievably tough.

Pan2 · 09/07/2021 12:39

Damn!

Just found out I have Politt in my team! Well, there's a thing.

Roman Nimes, I've never been there but a friend lives just above it and has decided she will live there for ever, as it were.

It's a Cav stage isn't? According to my official guide, without actually mentioning Cav....Bike

Pan2 · 09/07/2021 12:45

Ah, same French friend who took me to Stage 14 ( I think) for the roll out in Pyrenees 2015 - another fantastic touring memory.

Pan2 · 09/07/2021 12:53

Wooohooooo!

Arise Sir Cav! Got to be now surely?!

prettybird · 09/07/2021 16:41

Unfortunately if England win the Euros, his achievement will be overshadowed.

prettybird · 09/07/2021 16:42

But I might be biased, being Scottish Wink

I sincerely hope not! :)

What a race today!

MrsAvocet · 09/07/2021 17:12

Sad day for Simon Yates though.
Hope he is going to be ok for the Olympics.
I think I've lost over half my team now - I've completely given up checking on them.😂

EndoplasmicReticulum · 09/07/2021 17:24

Most of my team have sadly fallen off or might as well have.

Except one.

FelicityLemon · 09/07/2021 17:29

Amazing! Makes up for the lacklustre performance of my velogames team, though it's partly my faullt for not picking Cav so as not to jinx him.

prettybird · 09/07/2021 21:13

Thanks to Cav and Alaphilippe, I'm not doing as badly as I did last year - but my lack of a GC contender means that I'm still in the bottom half Hmm

Your sacrifice is appreciated Grin
prettybird · 10/07/2021 11:29

That's me lost a 2nd cyclist with Warren Barguil not starting today Sad

lljkk · 10/07/2021 18:16

My Velo-team is down to 5 riders, I heard that the real Lotto Soudal team is down to 4 riders.

I have opinions about the end-of-stage presentations. Instead of random pretty people as assistants, I propose...

Stage Win presentation: get 2nd & 3rd rider up there, too

White Jersey: get young athletes (age 16+) from *local high schools up there, chosen for commitment to their sport (sb)

Green Jersey: get young athletes (age 16+) from *local high schools up there, chosen for teamwork (sb)

Yellow Jersey: get top 3 in GC up there

Polkadots: get high achieving athletes from *local cycling clubs up there (all age, maybe not sb)

Red numbers/combativity: get young athletes (age 16+) from *local high schools up there, voted for by peers based on how much they inspire their peers, winner chosen as % of eligible voter pool at each eligible school (group or exclude tiny schools, sb)

*local = pupils/club members within 20 miles of stage finish
(sb) = sex balanced

Each assistant vacancy will result in one winner & one runner up (reserve) in each sex
Every assistant to conform to a smart black dress code except the a actual TdF riders & local club riders who get to wear their local jersey/cycling kit -

Heart of applications is 1 page Written statement from people who'd like to be considered as podium assistants, stating how they achieved or demonstrated great teamwork etc.

Local process to come up with shortlists for nominees for each stage ; applicants can apply for just one category in each stage finish assistant contest, and can apply for multiple stages.

Short listed Written statements to be anonymised (name & region) & read and ranked by small panels of assessors based outside the region; ie Province panel members would assess Paris or Brittany applicants - places not Province or adjacent province applicants.

I think I'm a genius... ha!
Better than random pretty "assistants" whose masked faces we can't see anyway.

lljkk · 10/07/2021 18:19

ps: applications to be supported by schools/club officers, who also validate that nothing demonstrably false was said, like "I won against 200 competitors" when the pool was really 5 other entrants, etc).

BookWorm45 · 11/07/2021 09:32

That is a really brilliant idea Lljkk
It would connect people who are keen on cycling directly, not just hired models / out of work actors or whoever it is that the TdF gets up on stage.

I used to hate it pre-Covid when the women had to kiss the winning cyclist on the cheek, typically leaving a glossy lipstick imprint. Eugghh...

EndoplasmicReticulum · 11/07/2021 09:36

The Giro had pink lipstick. Eww.
