Spoiler Alert - don't read further if you havent watched

**

So Cav gets in the breakaway and ends up coming in 4 minutes ahead of Chris Froome. If only i had put money on that 5 years ago i could retire now. Grin

How did I fail to spot this thread? I am a numpty.

I’m enjoying this year’s Tour - wonderful to see Cav doing well and winning again - but ohhh my, what a lot of crashes!

I’m glad the idiotic woman who caused that huge crash with her sign is getting prosecuted - as the commentators said “you can’t call her a spectator because she wasn’t even watching the race!”

MrSlant · 02/07/2021 21:20

Felicity Grin Grin Grin.

Pan am I allowed my annual mention of When I Went To See The Tour yet?

Pan2 · 02/07/2021 21:57

"MrSlant , we've been expecting you."

Touring always creates such brilliant memories n'est-ce pas?

Stood at the finish line at Gap, 2003. Melting in that summer's blistering heat. The stage where Lance Armstrong went off piste into a sunflower field.

Your turn. Grin

MrSlant · 02/07/2021 22:27

Top of the Alpe d'huez, sat for hours just at the top of the slope, fought an old lady on crutches for a polka dot t-shirt from the caravan (she tried to grab it from my hands!) Cav came up in the gruppeto and I screamed CAAAAAAAAAAAV and I swear he turned and smiled Grin. Best Day Ever just for the helicopters rising menacingly up the mountain being the only indicator of what was coming towards us.

I am 100% going again one day.

Thank you for your patience Grin Bike Grin.

Pan2 · 02/07/2021 22:40

They should play Orff's Empress when the helicopters appear in the distant sky.

lljkk · 03/07/2021 08:56

Watts Occurring podcast was good a few days ago. Luke Rowe had a lot to say about crash-causing "spectator" (maybe not what you'd expect him to say)

Apparently there's still shenanigans playing out on the road during stages due to Movistar having very bad blood with Ineos for poaching Carapaz (its own soap opera saga)

Amazing Cav 💖 💖 💖

I'm now even more firmly predicting Carapaz for the GC, btw.

Will van der Poel withdraw today, concentrate on Olympics instead, his team isn't strong enough to take GC, anyway?

I'm 4th in MN mini-league and predicting this is my highpoint, will descend the ranks after vdP withdraws.

Heavily Pissing it down here today, thank goodness for TdF because I'm not getting outside much today.

prettybird · 03/07/2021 09:11

I'm enjoying my best ever showing in the MN league at only 8th Smile Given I don't have a real GC contender Richie Porte doesn't count - my initial team only came to 82 points and I'd meant to go back and swap out someone - probably Wout Pouls as I'd confused him for Wout van Aert Blush - but didn't get round it Hmm - I'm pretty pleased Grin

Pan2 · 03/07/2021 17:12

Another weird stage. It's all utterly lawless isn't it.

(Why oh why did I choose Kruijswijk in my team? Or Mr Hart? Am seeing the need for another motivational discussion.)

FelicityLemon · 03/07/2021 17:41

Yay, Cav made the time cut! And the front end of the race was even more exciting.

OP posts:
prettybird · 03/07/2021 17:55

Actually, just gone back to check: I'd already taken out Wout Poels - I think to put in Warren Barguil Hmm Oops Blush

I was trying to explain to dh why if Cav missed the time cut, he might have still been ok because of the size of the gruppeto but could lose the green jersey. He didn't think that losing points was fair on the sprinters Confused which it isn't. Hmm

FelicityLemon · 03/07/2021 18:03

With so many sprint stages left he could possibly have won it back.

OP posts:
prettybird · 03/07/2021 18:30

Looking at DQS's picture of Cav finishing, his broad smile suggests that his sheer joy at being there is giving him wings and making up for the possible lack of preparation for a 3 week Grand Tour and its inevitable mountain stages Grin

EndoplasmicReticulum · 03/07/2021 18:33

He was only officially going on the Monday before it started, so who knows.
I thought it was funny yesterday when he got in the break and was looking round as if to say "oh shit what am I doing here".

prettybird · 03/07/2021 18:38

He's not exactly a natural mountain climber Wink - remember all those times that Bernie Eisel had to coax him up and over the mountains Grin

Pan2 · 03/07/2021 19:49

Far more importantly....the Official Guide arrived.
No socks.....but we do have beer mats, of tour heroes.

As we imagine, the features of the guide vary immensely from the actual first week tour events. Bike

FelicityLemon · 03/07/2021 20:37

@Pan2 yes ... the 'sprinters to watch' section didn't age well.

OP posts:
BookWorm45 · 04/07/2021 11:55

Just seen that Roglic and VDP won't be starting today's stage. What a pity for Roglic in particular.

Planning to enjoy watching TDF this afternoon from the comfort of my sofa while it rains outside.....

And as we are soon to get a young male cat, wondering what name (possibly cycling related) would be viable. Can I see myself calling "Cavendish... ! Dinner... !" across the garden. DP suggested Merckx but i have said no on the grounds that no one can spell it.

prettybird · 04/07/2021 11:58

I think Cavendish would be a great name - easily shortened to Cav Smile

Cavendish the Cat has quite a ring to it Grin

EndoplasmicReticulum · 04/07/2021 12:24

Until you find yourself chasing the furry little beast around the house trying to apply flea drops and can't catch him!

BookWorm45 · 04/07/2021 12:49

Yes just think how embarrassing if I called him Cav and he wasn't very speedy...

Definitely a rider's name (rather than a team name) might be fun. Team names change too often or end up in suspicious circumstances

prettybird · 04/07/2021 13:02

Dh has suggested Spartacus for the cat's name. Grin

lljkk · 04/07/2021 14:38

Give us pic of cat to be, bookworm. Or any info you have on personality.

Geraint? G loves his food & is a simple beast, after all.

lljkk · 04/07/2021 14:39
  • good at climbing, lots of stamina when it matters...
BookWorm45 · 04/07/2021 15:11

Haven't actually got cat yet so no pic, but he's young, male, enthusiastic, energetic and apparently loves climbing. Plus loves chasing after toys and catching them. Which cyclist is this most like? (Nb Peter Sagan not on my possible list)
