Many thanks boys. Now back to finish the old one

Thanks boys

Thanks for the new thread

JanglyBeads · 17/12/2021 22:03

Something just occurred to me re sequencing to find if omicron:

Am sure I read an article about Sanger etc in the early summer (delta being new) which said that there was a new method of doing it (or new machines or something) which would cut the time needed down to about 24 hrs. They were going to introduce it imminently.

They obviously haven’t??

Thanks for the new thread, I'm a keen lurker. DH was asking me yesterday if there was any data on Omicron mitigation measures, e.g. are masks and distancing less effective? Anecdatally anyone we know who has had it seems to have picked it up at unmasked socialising last week, not in a mitigated (social distancing, masks etc).

plantastic · 18/12/2021 07:58

*mitigated environment

Firefliess · 18/12/2021 08:09

Solid data on the impact of masks etc is tricky - it's mostly real world data that is muddied by people who choose to wear masks etc being generally more cautious. Randomised controlled experiments are thin on the ground. There's certainly nothing Omicron specific - it's only been around for 3 weeks! But it's clear that it spreads more easily than other strains. Masks, etc are likely to work just as well as they do for other variants but none of those measures actually stops spread - they just reduce it a bit.

SplitterBug · 18/12/2021 08:10

Thanks for the thread.

Can anyone clarify - does the headline figure on the UK gov dashboard for cases include reinfections or not? Say, if someone had Alpha last year and Omicron this year, would both be in the figures, or just the Alpha?

lonelyplanet · 18/12/2021 08:45

No reinfections are not currently included but they are working on sorting this out.

MarshaBradyo · 18/12/2021 08:46

Thanks Boys

Quarantino · 18/12/2021 08:48

Anyone got info on whether n95/ffp2 masks are effective enough as protection for oneself to be worth the cost? I'd mainly be using it to go to the supermarket as not working or doing much else mixing indoors.

Secondly, this tweet thread mentions a Pfizer anti-viral- I have missed any discussion on this, could someone summarise or point me to a good summary on what it does/ what it might mean?

twitter.com/Bob_Wachter/status/1471980512503758853?

Thanks!

lonelyplanet · 18/12/2021 08:50

UKHSA advice to Sajid Javid on 7th December. I think he's missed the deadlines. I wonder whether the advice has been updated?

‘But a methodology memo published quietly by the UKHSA on Thursday states it is now wrong to assume that the doubling rate will remain constant, and so should no longer be used.’

I heard this on the news, googled and found more detail

Re the 200k claim

NeverHomeAlone · 18/12/2021 09:01

Hello, long time lurker on these stats threads. Thanks for the calm and clear discussions.

There is some question on this thread about what exactly the 85% effectiveness of the boosted vaccines means. How did they work out this figure? Can anyone link to any info?

Thanks

SplitterBug · 18/12/2021 09:25

@lonelyplanet

No reinfections are not currently included but they are working on sorting this out.
Thanks for clarifying. It didn't really matter before as reinfections were a drop in the ocean. It is potentially very different now. Glad they (UKHSA?) are trying to fix this. Wonder if there will be political pressure to keep it unfixed though.
lonelyplanet · 18/12/2021 09:28

Leaked sage minutes from Thursday's meeting:
mobile.twitter.com/jim_reed/status/1471915719117971456

Firefliess · 18/12/2021 09:39

They do publish reinfection figures weekly. With Omicron they seem to be about 7% of all cases - so I don't seen any political pressure to surpress them being likely because they're already available, and because, with the rate of growth as it is, 7% one way or the other really isn't going to make much difference

Quartz2208 · 18/12/2021 09:47

12-15 second jabs is now live - booked in DD for the 1st January. They are clearly running special vaccination clinics as all my options had 12-15 by them!

Pleased as she can have it for going back to school

SplitterBug · 18/12/2021 10:17

Thanks Firefliess. Do you happen to know where to find that weekly reinfection data? I looked in the most recent surveillance report and could only see data to 31 Oct.

wonderstuff · 18/12/2021 10:23

Interesting about booking 12-15, is that just for vulnerable groups? Got email from school yesterday with consent form for second jab saying they were planning on delivering second jab in school in early February.
