Was it wise to have a football match in a pandemic?

It’s just crazy. Maybe freedom day did happen and we missed it?

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 18/06/2021 17:40

Football has been happening throughout this whole thing..there has been crowd outside here and then but don't think been fanzones just pub gatherings. Also outside stadiums..Rangers,City,Chelsea etc.
Seems madness to travel esp from Scotland as can just watch there?

BamboozledandBefuddled · 18/06/2021 17:40

And people wonder why I refuse to take restrictions seriously anymore. Put a stop to things like this and I might change my attitude.

24hoursfromtulsa · 18/06/2021 17:40

'A football match' - you do realise there is a whole tournament taking place?

This is entirely the fault of the Scottish fans, travelling down in huge numbers when they had no tickets to the match or indeed to any organised screenings. Bloody idiots.

MrsFrisbyMouse · 18/06/2021 17:40

Normally I'm pretty sceptical of camera angles etc - but having just come through central london, it's actually pretty crazy out there. I've been through Kings Cross 4 times today - and it's felt like more and more people arriving each time.

It's going to be mayhem - though the rain might help!!

LindaEllen · 18/06/2021 17:42

There's A LOT of money in this tournament, and we all know money talks.

The government can talk about saving lives as much as they want, but they will continue to prioritise money over that.

MsFogi · 18/06/2021 17:45

There has been a very clear exemption for football throughout the pandemic - can't deprive the men of their football!

Mindymomo · 18/06/2021 17:45

20,000 Scottish fans have come to London, although only 3,000 tickets were sold to them.

Againstmachine · 18/06/2021 17:48

And they are talking about "football VIPs"
Being exempt from restrictions, whilst us plebs have to follow the rules.

This. They were warned not to but deliberately chose to ignore it. I just hope they aren’t responsible for coming back up and causing Scotland to remain in tier 2 for even longer.
LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 18/06/2021 17:49

Wonder if the VIP's being exempt will go ahead. They didn't for the Champions League that's why it ended up in Portugal. Guess this is different and a bigger event.

Doyoumind · 18/06/2021 17:49

You won't be pleased to hear that UEFA want 2,500 VIPs to come from around the world to Wembley for the finals without having to quarantine.

Doyoumind · 18/06/2021 17:51

*final

MarshaBradyo · 18/06/2021 17:52

I don’t care about crowds but I could weep at the dc at our school isolating for ten days in contrast due to one case

Also I was thinking about the speed at which government responded to that super football threat v various pandemic situations

Baileysforchristmas · 18/06/2021 17:52

A lady at work said she went to her sisters wedding at the weekend, they weren’t allowed to sing in the church, they weren’t allowed to dance at the venue, music had to be kept very low, only 30 people allowed, people to be kept in their bubbles, the venue had shut at 8. The more I hear, the more I think we are being played for fools. Another one rule for one....

Baileysforchristmas · 18/06/2021 17:55

Luckily my daughter has not had to isolate and there are no cases at her school, probably because most of us have decided to stop LFT tests twice a week.

Students don’t bother afaik but a teacher had contact with half the school Sad
DoucheCanoe · 18/06/2021 17:58

As a Scot, I think it's bloody ridiculous that fans were allowed to travel specifically for this whilst every one else is stuck in a perpetual groundhog Day.

I'm not a Covid police informant in the slightest and don't agree with lockdowns anymore but that takes the piss.

AnyFucker · 18/06/2021 17:58

Yes, we are being played for fools. No dancing/singing at weddings but thousands of football fans chanting and shouting in each other’s faces is ok.

TruelyonelastSchlep · 18/06/2021 18:00

Does being 90% alcohol stop you from getting covid?

We are about to find out🤓

Baileysforchristmas · 18/06/2021 18:00

@MarshaBradyo your poor daughter what a nightmare, I seriously think we should stop self isolating now if you have a negative PCR test, this is getting ridiculous now.

OP posts:
secretllama · 18/06/2021 18:01

It's nice to see life resuming and people enjoying themselves. The numbers just show you nobody's listening anymore.

Saying that, it's still sad for the weddings, festivals etc that can't happen when people are gathering anyway.

Baileysforchristmas · 18/06/2021 18:04

And children are having to isolate for 10 days when there’s nothing wrong with them. I don’t care about people enjoying themselves, I do care there is different rues for different people. We’re not all in it together.

MarshaBradyo · 18/06/2021 18:05

Thanks Baileys

I’m actually good with life returning, and would be fine with this.

I just can’t bear the discrepancy for dc stuck inside for ten days, with no symptoms and negative test. The impact is huge.

TempsPerdu · 18/06/2021 18:05

…And yet the women protesting on Clapham Common were handcuffed and dispersed. Angry

Yes, but it’s not only money over lives; it’s money over well-being. Thousands of chanting football fans… but choirs still can’t meet. Park Run still not happening. And two close friends were informed today that their children’s school transition meetings (one into Reception, one Yr 7) have been cancelled. Unless it can be monetised, it’s not a priority for reopening.

As ever, football is afforded special status.
