The only people who are going to be made to feel shame/guilt are the ones who are already doing what they can and worry that they should be doing more - possibly to their detriment.

I've been out twice in a month - first an urgent appointment, second the follow-up appointment. I guess I could have spent the last month unable to close my jaw, struggling to eat (while already having low appetite), but I chose to follow medical advice even when it involved traveling 5 minutes to the next area over in my city via a taxi therefore putting myself and others at higher risk. I live with two people who work out of the home, they do what they can even though it involves members of the public who don't.

I do feel for the health care staff, I feel for the family members and loved ones (even if their mask keeps slipping off their nose as they emotionally talk about their wife dying, I've seen my 9 year old's mask slip off just from him walking even with a thick child's size mask), but telling people to 'learn' and talking about shame isn't going to help anyone or get anyone who isn't already be careful to change their ways.

TwelvePaws · 20/01/2021 09:09

Surely the people that have caught it have not been following the rules (apart from the poor souls who caught it in hospital or care homes) . Should they learn!!! And be ashamed!!! Op.
Surely if they were social distancing, wearing masks, never leaving the house and having their shopping delivered they wouldn't have caught it.
Makes you think, doesn't it?

Your post makes zero sense. Some people go to work in jobs where they can’t social distance. Kids were at school with no social distancing in bubbles. They went home to their families etc. So much more I could say but I won’t bother as something tells me it’ll be a waste of my time.

vera99 · 20/01/2021 09:10

@RhubarbAndRoses apologies I read the OP and the first page and thought it was a badly conceived thread with a hyperbolic introduction without any context. It looks like the discussion has forked to a serious note. I had thought it was from the conspiraloon fringe and my remarks were a poor attempt at sardonic humour.

Henio · 20/01/2021 09:11

My god that video is heartbreaking 😞

Anotherdates · 20/01/2021 09:12

@Livelovebehappy

anotherdates it is extending covid. Because we don’t even yet know how effective the vaccine is going to be, or whether people can get it more than once, doesn’t take account of the variants - a few have been identified already, and we don’t know if the vaccine is going to be affective for all variants. Currently the virus is swamping the NHS. Surely following the rules will stem this as will reduce infections. Infections are already falling since lockdown.
@Livelovebehappy if the vaccine isn’t effective, covid will stay, unless we reach herd immunity.

Breaking lockdown rules i don’t believe is the right thing to do. But labelling it as causing the extension of covid’s presence is silly. Breaking lockdown rules simply spreads it faster.

Of course, technically we could have stopped covid entirely had we all locked ourselves away completely. But that was never possible as we still needs supermarket staff and suppliers etc to carry on.

I’m not sure where the idea that lockdown = no more covid. It doesn’t. Effective vaccine = no more covid. Lockdown = stop the speed at which it spreads. It doesn’t mean eradicate covid.

vera99 · 20/01/2021 09:20

Just watched it in tears - heartbreaking beyond words. Our country is in the midst of a disaster like no other we have seen in our lifetimes and it's not yet done. If you aren't taking it seriously and modifying your behaviour appropriately then you need your head testing. Apologies for my previous words - just polite note threads would benefit from a bit of context and introduction when sharing a link.

cardswapping · 20/01/2021 09:23

I think the UK get it. And before the new variant, the new case line was consistently on a downward trend. The new variant has messed all the good work of so many people.

The parties, etc. I do believe are outliers and rare behaviours and it is getting grating to hear the assumption that you get covid because you were careless. There is still work that cannot be done from home, etc.

Be kind.

Far from it what don’t you understand that not everyone has the luxury of staying home. Millions of us are still working. What about that don’t you understand? As I’ve said before hundreds of thousands of construction workers are travelling up and down the country . Whose fault is that ? The workers are calling for closure of these sites but the government don’t care . Do you think they want to share a van with different households? Do you think they want to eat lunch in a canteen with lots of other people? It isn’t possible to eat with a mask on . Masks are getting wet in snow and rain. When the mask is wet it isn’t as effective . Not possible to keep 2 meters apart as many jobs cannot be done by one person. It’s the governments fault don’t blame innocent workers
PurpleDaisies · 20/01/2021 09:24

Can “be kind” just disappear now?

TonMoulin · 20/01/2021 09:24

I think they should have allowed reporters in hospitals and covid wards a long time ago.
In the first wave we had images from Italy to remind us how horrible it could become.
Now people have git used to it, it was Italy, not the U.K. And there no more talks of people been told to stay at home until they are blue, doctors having to chose who would get treatment or not.
And this is good. In some ways, the nhs has managed to reorganise in such a way that it can cope with 2 or 3 times more patients than they have capacity for. Taht should be celebrated.

But I think it has given people the false I pression that things are not that bad.

Fembot123 · 20/01/2021 09:26

WAKE UP SHEEPLE !!!!!
Knob off
TonMoulin · 20/01/2021 09:26

@2BDIs, there is athread going in just now about a police officer who caught covid from a man they had arrested.
All 3 police officers have tested positive
The guy KNEW he was positive but was still out and about.

Now, do you think these police officer only caught covid because they didn’t follow the guidelines?

Robbybobtail · 20/01/2021 09:28

The lunatics are taking over the asylum.

cardswapping · 20/01/2021 09:29

@PurpleDaisies I herewith give Mumsnet permission to edit it out of my post Grin

TonMoulin · 20/01/2021 09:30

@cardswapping, yes we all need to remeber to be kind to each other. Insults etc... are never going to help, even less in the current shit show we have.

HOWEVER, being kind does NOT mean leaving everyone doing whatever they want because .
It’s like with children. It’s not kind to them to let them run riots and to not teach them to behave in society, to be respectful and kind towards others.
In this is case it’s also not kind the let people do as they please when it also means their behaviour increase the number of people dying. And that it might well include one of the close relatives (or themselves). It’s still ok to have boundaries and maintain them (in this case this is also about the law)

TonMoulin · 20/01/2021 09:33

@Anotherdates
I don’t know about the fact that lockdown are not effective.
Australia, New Zealand, etc etc have all used lockdowns very efficiently. And they don’t have the issues the U.K. has. Incl avoiding a new variant (one reason why the new variant appeared in theUK is because of the very high number of cases in the U.K.)

Robbybobtail · 20/01/2021 09:33

Either give an opinion or don’t and move on, what’s the point in just writing no. It’s pretty pathetic.

I thought it was funny.

cardswapping · 20/01/2021 09:35

I agree @TonMoulin (va trop vite). The forbidden overused two words were in response to the "Watch this!!! Be ashamed!!!".

Robbybobtail · 20/01/2021 09:38

Hopefully none of your family will be knocked on the head by an errant branch or break an ankle down a rabbit hole on your deserted country walks!

Now I’ve heard it all!
Have you ever come across the Josephine Anwhistle character in the Lemony Snicket books?

iailwfsaidc · 20/01/2021 09:42

Learn!!! Be ashamed!!!

Fuck off with your preachy attitude.
I don't need to learn and I'm not ashamed and nor do I need to be.
Who do you think you are talking to?

I have stuck to every single COVID rule since the pandemic began. I don't need people shouting at me with this attitude.

When will these people shouting "Learn!!! Be ashamed!!!" realize that the measures can only reduce the chance of getting COVID. They can not reduce that risk to zero even if people have stuck religiously to the guidelines.

Are you saying that the people who have caught it and sadly died didn't stick to the guidelines because that's the logical conclusion of your post?

I live in another country. Recently the part of the country I live in has had a major uptick in infections. All we've heard for the last 3 weeks is people shouting at us on social media telling us that we are more badly behaved than the rest of the country and that's why we have more cases. We've been breaking guidelines apparently and not wearing masks! Bollocks. I haven't seen a single person anywhere not wearing a mask where they were meant to.
Two days ago they announced on the news that the British mutation is now rife in our area and that's the reason for the upswing in cases. 50 % of the new cases are down to this.

So people have been yelling and screaming and calling us names when in fact it's the new, more infectious mutation to blame.

LegoAndLolDolls · 20/01/2021 09:43

If I twist my ankle going to buy my kids food am I still as much of a selfish feckless twat as if twist my ankle walking around the countryside in my village? Asking for a friend of course

If I have a heart attack and need a ambulance would the morally right thing to do be stay at home so I dont catch covid? If I take the selfish route and think I need to survive because my kids would end in care, am i twat if i catch covid in hospital?

Is everyone who caught covid a feckless twat? I mean come on its spreading because of rule breaking right?? No other reason at all. It's only spread by fuckers right? So if your perfect your immune because you know, perfect people take no risks so they are immune. They dont have heart attacks during pandemics. They shop online and have the stockists, pickers and delivery drivers who are living together in isolation with daily covid tests right? I mean surely we are all doing that arent we?

I'm thick, you have every answer. Preach to me. I am not worthy. Right?

EvilPea · 20/01/2021 09:45

Oh Piss off op

I get myself in knots every day trying to do the right thing
Do I use that click and collect slot? Is it better to go to a shop and leave the slot? Or worse to go in the shop? I just don’t know!!
We aren’t leaving the house for walks as everywhere is just too busy.
I try not to order things we don’t need, but is that the right thing or not as we’ve got to help the economy.

If we catch it, it’s coming in from work. I can’t help that.

Like millions of others at the moment. We are doing our best.

Some people are twats. There has always been twats there will always be twats. They won’t feel ashamed. They feel justified.

TwelvePaws · 20/01/2021 09:54

No one is annoyed at people like you. So why tell the OP to piss off?

grapewine · 20/01/2021 10:00

EvilPea

Because the OP is preachy af? That's my guess and certainly why I was annoyed.
TwelvePaws · 20/01/2021 10:00

I have stuck to every single COVID rule since the pandemic began. I don't need people shouting at me with this attitude.

OP aimed it at people breaking rules so clearly not at you as you’ve said you stick to the rules. 🤷🏻‍♀️
