Saturday night we are going to a concert in Newcastle (well we were meant to be )
We've paid for train (over £100 each ) and hotel (£150 split) and £80 ticket each.
Tonight she text saying she isn't coming as she is scared incase she catches coronavirus.
So I have nobody to go with and we only reserved hotel so I will have to pay £150 for that.
Aibu to be Annoyed?
I told her to get a grip, and was she planning on not going out till after this has gone.

Words very rarely fail me. You come across as unbelievably naive - update us when you come back from your 'cruise'. Good Luck with that.

exexpat · 11/03/2020 23:41

By the weekend I think a lot more things may be getting cancelled: news.sky.com/story/coronavirus-uk-set-to-move-to-delay-phase-schools-could-close-and-major-events-cancelled-11955695

I went out this evening but I think it is probably the last time I will be going to a theatre/film/gig etc for a while. I have elderly parents who depend on me for some things, so maybe I am more conscious than most about limiting potential exposure, but if you look at what is happening in Italy now, we may only be a couple of weeks away from that point.

ThisSistineWontScreamAtItself · 11/03/2020 23:41

If things get cancelled etc fair enough but the newspapers are constantly writing articles which isn't helping

No?! Newspapers constantly writing news? Ooh, the bastards. Next you'll be telling me about doctors constantly treating patients or teachers constantly teaching children. Imagine the nerve of them...

This can't be real but again if it is, I look forward to your thoughts this time tomorrow. See you then!

Drama and being ramped up for no reason

More likely to win the lottery than die from coronovirus

redwinefine · 11/03/2020 23:42

It's NEWCASTLE, not Italy. YANBU. She's completely overreacting

Lynda07 · 11/03/2020 23:42

It's disappointing but if she pays up that will help soothe the blow somewhat. You can go alone - might even enjoy it better on your own.

I very much doubt you'll be going to Amsterdam in three weeks.

My son has been working in various parts of Europe but everything was cancelled in France and he arrived back to the UK this morning; was due to be in Germany on the 18th but that has been cancelled.

It's going to get worse before it gets better.

If you are OK and there aren't cases near to where you live, you can still go out until told not to but travelling far is a no no for now.

Just accept it and relax. It will pass eventually.

Oakmaiden · 11/03/2020 23:42

I'm sorry - I know if you are genuine (and I can believe you probably are) this is going to seem rude.

But it seems a bit like a bingo card of "completely unaware and unconcerned about what is going on around me right now"!

Emmelina · 11/03/2020 23:43

It’s disappointing, but, everyone is being very casual as to how quickly Coronavirus can suddenly take off. I’m attaching a screenshot of Italy’s cases. Highlighted is when they had the same number of cases we currently have. Three days later, that figure almost trebled. If we follow the same pattern, then by the weekend things are going to start looking a lot more serious for us over here.

You'll have a better idea as to the government protocols tomorrow, but it's looking like they're about to up the recommend restrictions. The gig may not be happening anyway, but she should def pay what she owes.

Glassio · 11/03/2020 23:44

hopefully it targets and wipes out idiots thise above first

Yester · 11/03/2020 23:45

Well I'm ill potentially with Covid but can't get tested. As I'm self-employed its already cost me £500. I've been incredibly ill and would pay £150 to get better.

lindseyvvt · 11/03/2020 23:45

I can't see them stopping large events in uk this week.
They let in people from Madrid to the champions league match

I believe the government knows we have to go into lockdown. It's a balancing act for them. They know this will have a massive impact on our economy, so it's balancing that with ensuring people are sufficiently scared that they will adhere to a lockdown. People who think along lines of OP probably suggests the fear factor is not yet high enough.

OP you are being totally unreasonable. Your friend has a right to tell you why she can't go. You can't dictate to her what she must do. But you should not be out of pocket.

These are unprecedented times.

Yester · 11/03/2020 23:46

I bet there's 1000s like me across the country.

lLL85 · 11/03/2020 23:46

Why is Cheltenham races on then!!!

lindseyvvt · 11/03/2020 23:46

Isn't this the same as Swine flu and bird flu tho?

OP posts:
lLL85 · 11/03/2020 23:47

People totally overreacting.

500 people vs 60 mil

HermioneMakepeace · 11/03/2020 23:48

OP, what’s the concert? Maybe there’s a Mumsnetters reading this thread who would like to go with you?

No, it’s far more serious than Bird Flu and Swine Flu.

ThisSistineWontScreamAtItself · 11/03/2020 23:48

Isn't this the same as Swine flu and bird flu tho?

Bloody hell.

Also no acknowledgement of the graph someone just shared showing how cases in Italy skyrocketed at the stage we are at now? Not interested in that OP?

Dutypaid · 11/03/2020 23:48

OP is being way too ignorant; this can't be real.

HeronLanyon · 11/03/2020 23:50

yester sorry you’ve been unwell. Hope you’re better soon.

lindseyvvt · 11/03/2020 23:50

I'm not being ignorant I just think the figures speak for themselves.
Less than 500 people
The concert is the script.

OP posts:
Starksforthewin · 11/03/2020 23:50

OP your ignorance is appalling. People like you are the reason why this PANDEMIC is so serious. You will not sacrifice one iota of your social life to help the nation break the cycle of infection.

Educate yourself. Your friend is being thoughtful, not just for herself, but for all her other contacts and their contacts and so on.

You sound immeasurably selfish and entitled.

ThisSistineWontScreamAtItself · 11/03/2020 23:51

I'm not being ignorant I just think the figures speak for themselves

OK, so what about the figures in the graph showing Italy's case growth? Or are you just picking which figures you like?

exexpat · 11/03/2020 23:51

No, this is not just like the swine flu/bird flu.

Two weeks ago Italy had fewer confirmed cases than the UK does today. Now, Italian doctors are basically having to decide who lives or dies when they get to hospital as they cannot treat everyone who needs intensive care. The whole of Italy is in lock-down. If people in the UK start social distancing now, we might not get quite that bad.
