Saturday night we are going to a concert in Newcastle (well we were meant to be )
We've paid for train (over £100 each ) and hotel (£150 split) and £80 ticket each.
Tonight she text saying she isn't coming as she is scared incase she catches coronavirus.
So I have nobody to go with and we only reserved hotel so I will have to pay £150 for that.
Aibu to be Annoyed?
I told her to get a grip, and was she planning on not going out till after this has gone.

I suppose if she's not going to enjoy it, there's no point.

I understand how disappointing it must be for you though.

AutumnRose1 · 11/03/2020 23:10

She needs to pay all her costs

But I’d respect her decision and I’m going to the theatre at the weekend

If my friend cancelled, I wouldn’t mind but she’d have to pay.

Reginabambina · 11/03/2020 23:10

Could you find anyone else to go with you in her place?

lindseyvvt · 11/03/2020 23:10

I just think it's a total over reaction.
I've asked a couple of other friends but it's too short notice now.

YABU to tell her to get a grip. Your friend has valid fears and should be able to cancel. Understandably you're annoyed about losing money, but we're in unprecedented times and £150 loss is nothing in comparison to potentially becoming ill with covid and passing it on.

CalleighDoodle · 11/03/2020 23:12

She needs to pay

PondLover · 11/03/2020 23:12

She’s being perfectly reasonable to want to limit her exposure to large gatherings, as long as she’s paying her share.

lindseyvvt · 11/03/2020 23:13

I just think if it was a danger to people then it would have been cancelled.

Toothsil · 11/03/2020 23:14

I don't think it's an over reaction. People aren't grasping how serious this is, and concerts are crowded places. YABU to have told her to get a grip, she's allowed to make her own decisions. She should pay her share though and not leave you out of pocket.

Alicesweewonders · 11/03/2020 23:14

I've booked for the theatre with friends and I'm seriously considering not going.
The thought of sitting in a closed room full of people for nearly 2 hours considering what's going on is making me anxious, and I don't think I'd enjoy it.

lindseyvvt · 11/03/2020 23:14

Tbh I haven't really let myself think about this virus and just tried to take precautions.

YANBU to be disappointed and it’s her choice not to go but she can’t leave you out of pocket.

Gadgnkk · 11/03/2020 23:16

She’s right not to go.
She should pay her share though.
Do you think the others you’ve asked to go in her place are really busy with un-cancellable plans or do you think they are actually scared of covid.

katewhinesalot · 11/03/2020 23:16

Yes, you are being unreasonable. She needs to pay her share though

BIWI · 11/03/2020 23:17

She's not unreasonable to be worried, and to want to cancel. However, if that leaves you out of pocket, that is unreasonable, so she should be paying you what she owes.

lindseyvvt · 11/03/2020 23:17

There is 66 million in the uk and less than 500 cases.
It does seem over the top but I'm trying not to get obsessed.

I did not go to an expensive ticket thing last week - was feeling under the weather and it didn’t seem sensible.
I don’t think she’s overreacting at all. Denmark shutting schools, italy now shutting all shops other than food and pharmacies, India cancelling all visas and quarantine for nationals returning from risk countries symptoms or not - this is actually big and serious.

lindseyvvt · 11/03/2020 23:21

What about holidays? Would people cancel those too?
I'm booked up to go to Amsterdam on a weekend cruise in three weeks I'm assuming that is still going ahead

There is 66 million in the uk and less than 500 known cases

Corrected it for you.

In Shetland two people have been diagnosed that were considered to be at very low risk, but were tested due to their symptoms. Other places are not testing people considered to be at very low risk.

Many events are being cancelled due to Coronavirus. The fact that your gig isn't doesn't mean it has lower risk.

Dutypaid · 11/03/2020 23:23

Read up on Italy OP. We are two weeks away from that. YABU and she should cover her costs.

HeronLanyon · 11/03/2020 23:24

I wouldn’t assume anything about Amsterdam in 3 weeks and a cruise of all things !! A cruise ?!

WelcomeToShootingStars · 11/03/2020 23:24

I've just cancelled plans with a friend for next Sunday, for the same reason.

My husband has a very serious lung disease so I'm not prepared to take what I see as unnecessary risks. If my friend is upset then she'll have to make her peace with it.

However I don't expect anyone to be out of pocket as a result of my decisions so I've obviously offered to cover the cost.

Teddypops · 11/03/2020 23:24

I doubt your cruise will happen

lindseyvvt · 11/03/2020 23:25

Well it's not a proper cruise,it's a dfds weekend trip.
You board Friday night and get home Sunday afternoon

It's madness to get on a cruise ship now. They're floating petri dishes and if there's a single suspected case they'll quarantine the whole ship.
