Saturday night we are going to a concert in Newcastle (well we were meant to be )
We've paid for train (over £100 each ) and hotel (£150 split) and £80 ticket each.
Tonight she text saying she isn't coming as she is scared incase she catches coronavirus.
So I have nobody to go with and we only reserved hotel so I will have to pay £150 for that.
Aibu to be Annoyed?
I told her to get a grip, and was she planning on not going out till after this has gone.

We both are fit and well and young and nobody in our family has health issues so I assumed we were low risk.

YABU

BIWI · 11/03/2020 23:27

You sound like one of those 'it's only flu' people Hmm

People are having to make all kinds of decisions about what they're going to do, based on the very contradictory advice that we seem to be getting.

You may be quite happy to go on your cruise and not make any changes to your daily life, but it's not at all unreasonable for your friend to have made different decisions.

(But also, why the fuck would you would be thinking about going on a cruise now?!)

HeronLanyon · 11/03/2020 23:29

But you’ve seen all of the news about cruise ships over the last few weeks haven’t you ? Deaths and quarantine and unable to berth all across the world from San Fran to Luxor etc etc

puds11 · 11/03/2020 23:30

Go by yourself 🤷‍♀️

lindseyvvt · 11/03/2020 23:31

I just don't think we can stop living because of a virus Confused

Enough already, It's not you who's at risk, it's the people you'll infect! The older and the vulnerable. The people you may kill? Does that ring any moral bells for you!?

HeronLanyon · 11/03/2020 23:32

Lindsey - read what you just wrote. Really read it ! Sorry but it made me laugh. This virus is doing exactly that - making people stop living.

Zombiemum1946 · 11/03/2020 23:32

As long as she pays what she owes and doesn't stick you with the bill there's not much you can do, apart from understand her fears. As for the cruise, check your travel insurance because there's a high chance the cruise might be cancelled.

ThisSistineWontScreamAtItself · 11/03/2020 23:33

If this is real then wanting to go to a concert this week and a cruise in the very near future and being annoyed with people who don't want to do those things is wilfully ignorant / foolish!

If she is cancelling then she should pay but it doesn't sound like it's even the principle of the money that's annoying you, more that she is overreacting in your opinion.

The next few days look to be a gear change globally - during the course of this afternoon and evening lots of countries have announced strict measures and lockdowns to tackle this, many with (currently) fewer (known) cases. Because they've seen how it has spread elsewhere and are learning from it.

After the COBRA meeting tomorrow I think we will have a clearer insight into what the rest of March and April are going to potentially look like.

That cruise in three weeks is very unlikely to be happening I'm afraid OP!

CalmYoBadSelf · 11/03/2020 23:33

I had a text from my GP today which said "Patients with COPD, asthma or other respiratory issues should avoid crowds or mixing with large groups of people until the epidemic is over".

Maybe your friend is being sensible

PennyNotSoWise · 11/03/2020 23:33

Low risk of dying from it, probably, but you could still get it. And pass it on to people who are high risk.

lindseyvvt · 11/03/2020 23:33

All I mean is schools are open, concerts are going ahead
Surely the government would cancel it all

Well, you can do as you like. But that doesn't mean others have to dance to the beat of your drum.

You sound like a really shit friend.

Hmm. Now I've done an AS I see you're a first time poster. Now I'm wondering if you're just here as a goady fucker.

Dieu · 11/03/2020 23:36

A total overreaction. YANBU.

Salene · 11/03/2020 23:36

Your friend is smart, you are being foolish.

ThisSistineWontScreamAtItself · 11/03/2020 23:36

Well people who die from it will!

I'm not expecting to die from it but I don't want to get it and I certainly don't want to refuse measures (like missing a concert) that could help me not get it - because I also don't want to pass it on to more vulnerable people than me.

I am not going to 'stop living' if I need to cancel going to a concert or on a weekend cruise... it's just a case of taking sensible precautions.

Those required precautions are changing as we learn more about the way this virus spreads.

HeronLanyon · 11/03/2020 23:37

notjust I’ve been typing and then deleting for the same reason. Think it’s not terribly believable ?

ThisSistineWontScreamAtItself · 11/03/2020 23:38

Ah this must be goading.

If not then come back tomorrow and tell us what you think, after the government makes the next announcement of measures that will be taken.

Flufferbum · 11/03/2020 23:38

You shouldn’t be left out of pocket she pays her 50% of the hotel at least.

AmIAPenguin · 11/03/2020 23:38

Fucksake

FeeFee382 · 11/03/2020 23:38

YANBU!!!! Everyone needs to calm down. This is not a serious thing and just people hyped up by the media.

I'd be really annoyed. If it was serious we would be told to self isolate regardless.

lindseyvvt · 11/03/2020 23:38

I don't think I'm being foolish but I am gonna end up paying for a hotel by myself.
If things get cancelled etc fair enough but the newspapers are constantly writing articles which isn't helping
