Saturday night we are going to a concert in Newcastle (well we were meant to be )
We've paid for train (over £100 each ) and hotel (£150 split) and £80 ticket each.
Tonight she text saying she isn't coming as she is scared incase she catches coronavirus.
So I have nobody to go with and we only reserved hotel so I will have to pay £150 for that.
Aibu to be Annoyed?
I told her to get a grip, and was she planning on not going out till after this has gone.

OP posts:

Us flight ban from Europe for Friday. U.K. flights to continue.
Hanks and wife in Australia where diagnosed.

HeronLanyon · 12/03/2020 01:53

From Friday that should read.

Rosspoldarkssaddle · 12/03/2020 02:02

Her choice but she needs to pay up £75 for the hotel cost.

wowsertrousers · 12/03/2020 02:05

@SwedishEdith

'The concert is the script.'

Oh, well she's definitely NBU.

Grin Grin Grin

Frownette · 12/03/2020 02:06

I'll ask for this to be moved as well, corona isn't the most cheerful of topics and it would be nice to have aibu freed up

CoffeeHere · 12/03/2020 02:21

There is 66 million in the uk and less than 500 cases.
It does seem over the top but I'm trying not to get obsessed.
oh come on, at least get up to date with how much of a risk this is. The cases known are those who have returned from contaminated areas. Have you not seen the graphs?

NeckPainChairSearch · 12/03/2020 02:22

There is 66 million in the uk and less than 500 cases

You seem to have a Trumpian grasp of the reality.

Blubelle7 · 12/03/2020 02:26

Omg OP, I'm not overly worried but taking precautions and starting to worry we will definitely end up like Italy, but honestly the more you post the more stubbornly ignorant you seem to be and insist on staying.

Your attitude is the worst because I suspect even if you displayed symptoms you would insist on going out because you are healthy and spread it to everyone. Your attitude is exactly why I am scared because many people share it and are extremely selfish because no one they know is high risk, yeah you pass it onto me and then I give it to my neighbour who manages a care home and all hell breaks loose, families lose their loved ones but hey ho you are none the wiser and exclaiming how irrational people are to be so worried it's just a cough, you had it and survived.

ffswhatnext · 12/03/2020 02:30

I'm surprised really it's taken this long for countries to start locking down borders. Once it showed signs of spreading, then action should have been taken.

And just because something isn't officially declared as positive in your town is meaningless. It's in your area and spreading. You don't know if that one person was in direct contact with anyone from your town, and even in their own area, you don't know who that one person has been in contact with, and who they have been in contact with.

I'm surrounded but not locally with it. I know in the bordering areas there are confirmed places. The thing is, I have no idea where they have been, never mind if it's this end of the area.

Life does have to carry on that is true. But only to a certain extent. I couldn't give a flying fuck what the official government advice is. But one thing for certain, if it's not essential we aren't travelling anywhere.

It's spreading fast. It's already out of control and we do not have the medical resources or staff to deal with the current none infected patients. How are they going to cope? Its a nightmare heading our way. Hospital staff are putting themselves at risk every day because people want to carry on travelling.

If people don't really care about anyone else, think of those Doctors and Nurses. We should be doing everything to help them, and stop none essential travel. You never know, in a couple of weeks time and someone close to you gets this, where are they going to go when there's hardly anyone working in the hospitals. I can deal with the rest of the shit storm heading this way, but this really scares the shit out of me.

And why I couldn't give a fuck what the government are advising, they should be putting the non-essential travel message out there already. Not later today, tomorrow or next week. And considering at least one MP has it, how long before it wipes out Parliament? Then how are they supposed to advise, especially things that should really be common bloody sense? Even 'just the flu' can wipe a healthy person out for a week or more.

Frownette · 12/03/2020 02:34

It's not just on the horizon, it's here.

Having said that the majority of people testing positive won't die from it, but we want to stop it spreading to the particularly vulnerable. I can understand health anxiety over it.

ffswhatnext · 12/03/2020 02:42

Oh and can I advise for future travel arrangements, book somewhere that can be cancelled for free until the day of booking. Or have very good insurance.

If she had to cancel for other reasons, you would still be in this situation or vice versa.

ffswhatnext · 12/03/2020 03:07

And as for Amsterdam.

First confirmed case was 27th February.
6 days later, their first death and 128 confirmed cases.
Now, 382 confirmed. 4% of which are hospital staff. It's been 2 weeks.

Chances are, it will add to the ever-growing list of countries that airlines are refusing to fly to by cancelling flights.

ChickLitLover · 12/03/2020 03:14

I’m not panicking but I wouldn’t go to a concert at the moment either. It’s an unnecessary thing to do in very uncertain times. I think it’s sensible to limit the number of people we’re all coming into contact with. We’re doing school and work but nothing that’s unnecessary, why risk it? Your friend should pay her share though of course.

CuppaZa · 12/03/2020 03:29
  • All I mean is schools are open, concerts are going ahead Surely the government would cancel it all*

Since when has the government been that concerned about anyone OP?

If this is real, YABU. Respect her decision, don’t be rude and tell her to ‘get a grip’, and stop being ignorant.

She should be paying her half of everything though

QuiteForgetful · 12/03/2020 03:47

Health is more important than entertainment or money. I would not dream of risking my family or myself by attending any event in a large group of people.

feelingverylazytoday · 12/03/2020 04:06

Your friend is being very sensible. Unlike you.
As for going on holiday, WTF? People need to stay as close to home as possible, not travelling, potentially spreading viruses far and wide.
And yes, the government is at fault for not stopping flights sooner, though I understand their rationale in other aspects.

QuiteForgetful · 12/03/2020 04:10

Tom Hanks has COVID 19 now. In Australia.

TeaAndDarkToast · 12/03/2020 04:19

He won't be going to the gig either

Casino218 · 12/03/2020 04:41

I think it's you that is in denial. A large gathering is the last place people should be right now!

MarieFromStTropez · 12/03/2020 05:02

We are in Australia and DH is currently away at a 2 day conference along with the entire management team (90 people) of his company. It’s madness. If just one person turns out to have it, then the whole group will be without management whilst they’re all in isolation.

BimbleWimble · 12/03/2020 05:11

Your friend sounds very sensible. Social distancing is the only way to slow this down and prevent excess deaths at the moment. The Government are not being proactive enough.

tttigress · 12/03/2020 05:42

Looks like your friend is the sensible one, you seem quite of of touch with the news op.

SuperMumTum · 12/03/2020 05:50

I don't think YABU to be disappointed but she is perfectly within her rights to cancel for whatever reason she likes. You'll have to get over it.

Helpmechangemymindsetplease · 12/03/2020 05:55

All I mean is schools are open, concerts are going ahead
Surely the government would cancel it all

No, the government is a. lazy and b. cares about money more than about people.

Nanna50 · 12/03/2020 06:07

Haven’t read the whole thread but she should pay her half of the hotel. Is it the script, do you have good seats, if so I could buy her ticket off her.

The arena though is big, I can see the potential for passing on a virus and why she would worry.
